Charlotte Church: The X Factor Is "Killing Music"

| Filed under: Charlotte ChurchSimon CowellX Factor

Do we detect a hint of jealousy there, girl? Just because there is a new generation of performers being reared on reality television that threaten the longevity of your career, doesn't mean you need to get all bitter about it!

Charlotte Church recently took aim at Simon Cowell's talent search show The X Factor in Britain's Esquire magazine, claiming that the show is "killing music" for audiences. She added:

"That show doesn't have an interest in true craftsmanship or skill - it's all about your a**, and hopefully you can keep half a tune. It's dreadful news for everyone else because there's no room on radio or TV for anything else."

Aw, c'mon! That's not completely true! You're just getting all upset because no one asked you to be a judge.

No, we're not kidding. As her interview with the mag continues, Charlotte adamantly insists that would have made a "better judge" than anyone on the panel, Simon and Cheryl Cole included. She suggests the only reason she hasn't been asked to be a judge on the show is because Simon "wouldn't be able to control me, so he'd never have me on."

Um, yeah. That's the reason.

Hate to be the one to tell you this, hun, but the show isn't going anywhere and while we know you're not the only one who feels this way, you're not in the majority. The rest of us are totally down with Simon's hit factory, so maybe it's best if you just step aside and let the magic unfold.

I agree with her. I think the same thing about these idiotic "music" shows.

  3. 3

Perez, you are a hypocrite. What happened to not picking on anybody?

  4. 4

How come when everyone speaks out against these shows, they're always "wrong?" Have you thought maybe she has a point?

  5. 5

Old news!!! She already commented on this like two weeks ago saying she never said that, and said what she really did say and how it got taken out of context, and then apologized for the misunderstanding.

  6. 6

    She is 100% right.

  7. 7

em i dont really think she's being bitter, she is classicly trained so kinda knows what she's talking about. She was also a judge on a musical thetre talent search show and did a really good job. As much as I love X Factor, it does have too much control over the charts and makes it harder for new and alternative artists to get air play.

I kind of agree with her, but she isn't releasing anything that is too different from X-Factor material, bland unoriginal pop music.

  9. 9

she's right - X Factor, AI, that Glee shit - all churning out the worst cookie-cutter crap the world has ever seen.

    Shes completely right.

I love xfactor but….she does have a point to a certain extent. the only reason you're siding with the xfactor and licking cowells ass is because you think somewhere in your tone deaf deluded head that there's a possibility he will come knocking at your door and ask you to be a judge!

  12. 12

    she right on all counts.

  13. 13

I guess we should go back to the olden days where record labels pick and choose who can be a star then spend months on creating an "image."

  14. 14

Yeah, actually it is true. It's all about marketing a product and less about talent and originality.

  15. 15

Yeah pretty much everyone in Britain who loves music, hates the x factor. The majority (including me) want that crappy programme pulled!

Ms. Church is absolutely right. Music is so bland and predictable these days-it's like a throwback to the late 1950's early 1960's when teen idols ruled the airwaves, producing bland pop songs-few of which have stood the test of time. Face it-we need a group/performer to make an impact like The Beatles did and turn this mess around. I'm open to any kind of new music, but I've had my fill of the Mileys, Britneys, Beibers, etc. They have absolutely nothing to say and their music is usually completely derivative of whatever the current trend is. These stupid and grating shows have the same appeal as a train wreck-you don't want to watch, but it's hard to take your eyes off the carnage. Can't we just make this crap go away. Oh yeah, people are actually buying this stuff. Well, when people wake up and stop purchasing this junk, maybe someone will come along to fill the music void.

Nice one, Barney! Because all other artists are so 'real' in the industry….

weather she said this or not its true! i love watching her show when she had it. she even had one interview w/hilary duff and she was talking about how she hated the fact that these lil twats like paris and nicole just hit the scene and became big stars and didnt have to do shyt. when her and hilary duff worked hard their whole life and love doing what they do but they (WORKED HARD) for it. and these girls get famous for no real reason or talent. its the truth. does truth hurt perez? all you got famous for is for talking crap about people.

    Re: xcalibur
We can think a damn more than you pal.
Countries like America seem to enjoy creating their "own versions" of British TV programmes…The office? skins? shameless?
but yeah… XFactor sucks balls, not all us Brits like it.

Even when she wasnt never a great classical singer (compared to other classical singers ofc) she still had (has?) a great voice and can tune 200% more than those idiots appearing in these shows, without mentioning she knows the theory and has the experience and practice. She definitely is right and would be a WAY MUCH better judge than Cheryl (who I bet cannot read a single note… probably she might know where the "DO" is placed), Cheryl has a commoner voice without mentioning she hardly can sing most of the times.

  22. 22

She's right but for the wrong reasons. The X Factor sets out to uncover talented singers but what does every good singer need? Answer: A good song. Churning out loads of 'pop stars' with no songs to sing is like training millions of plumbers with no broken pipes to fix. The existing artists get more competition for the available songs and thus the whole output gets watered down to include poor songs that wouldn't normally see the light of day, albums with one good track or cover versions of songs that we already have access to, usually, in a superior form. People looked at singers like Diana Ross and thought she was the magic but the range of human voice and size of the population means that there are hundreds of Diana Ross' out there, the true magic that no reality show can uncover is good song writing.

Uh oh, Perez, you're getting catty and bitchy again. You're going to lose traffic again. I, for one, refuse to participate in a website in which you tear people down and judge their lives and words so harshly. Charlotte has valid points and the least you can do is acknowledge that fact. Her opinions are her own, and she's fully within her rights to express them.

  24. 24

X-Factor is NOT killing the music ind. Anyone who listens to real music doesen't watch GARBO like that anyhow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. 25

She's absolutely right!! She should have included that abortion American Idol in her statement. And GaGa.

  26. 26

Are you kidding Charlotte Church?? How many great Opera arias have you basterdized with your NON-OPERA trained voice when you were chasing either the all-mighty dollar or your 5 minutes in the spot light!! I think it is amusing how she makes these comments about others doing exactly what she does. A real soprano that spends YEARS training their voice to sing real roles, in real opera houses can add depth and maturity to their voices. Now Charlotte, who sings hollow little numbers on some shallow cd, thinks she is an authority on the voice. Perhaps she should sit down really listen to the masters of the music she is trying to sing. You know charlotte, real Opera singers don't use microphones and can sing over 100 person orchestras with ease….try that, then comment!!

  27. 27

Perez, you are really starting to make me hate gay people…. Namely you. You push crappy music, then complain when someone calls out said crappy music. Even though this bitch makes crappy music. What's with all the crappy music?

  28. @v@ says – reply to this

With her trained ear, she actually might have made a better judge than those two. It's not what you know but who you know…but why would they have to 'control' her, does she have rebellion issues?

  29. 29

    She's right.
And she can sing circles around Cheryl.

  30. 30

stop being a bitch to every celeb that toss your salad. she has a valid point, and I agree with her, as do many other artists. wait til gaga says it. then you'll agree.

  31. 31

You're right about being in the majority, Perez. All others in the minority should just "step aside and let the magic happen." Like what had happened with Prop 8. And George W. Bush. And DADT. And all the other anti-gay marriage laws. You were more than happy to just shut up and let that happen, right? Quit being a hypocritical little bitch.

  32. 32

charlotte is far more qualified for judging talent than cheryl or danni will ever hope to be.

sorry but this is the true these shows did to the music nothing even the contestent or winners are not that famous or hit only for a while and that it is may be it helped simon fame and other judges only but for music industry these shows can not do alote only hard work and luck and real talent could do
