BBC Anchor Wins Age Discrimination Case Against Network!

This is pretty crummy. We're glad that they're taking responsibility - as they rightfully should.

The BBC has been found guilty of age discrimination after a female anchor with more than 20 years of experience took them to court for being being unfairly fired earlier last year!

Miriam O'Reilly worked as an anchor on the BBC1 rural affairs program Countryfile. When network controller Jay Hunt moved the program to a weekday primetime slot, she and two other female presenters were replaced with younger talent, despite the show's older men anchors successfully making the transition.

O'Reilly claimed in the employment tribunal that managers thought that she was "too old" for prime time, and even offered her hair dye to make her appear younger!

Just awful!

Luckily, in light of the ruling, she is expected to receive a significant payout, and a spokesperson for the BBC has released the following statement:

"We accept the findings of the tribunal and would like to apologize to Miriam. We will be speaking to her. We would like to acknowledge the important contribution Miriam has made to the BBC over more than 20 years and we would welcome the opportunity to discuss working with her again in the future."

Well, we're glad steps are being taken to rectify the situation, but that doesn't excuse this even happening to begin with!

Deplorable!

May this never happen again!

Thoughts??

I'm really glad she won this case. It's ridiculous that the male anchors can carry on until they're old but the females get replaced the minute they get one grey hair. An institution as respected and prestigious as the BBC should not be doing this. It's not FOX news for god's sake! The BBC people who have made these decisions should be ashamed of themselves.

BBC IS THE OLD FOLGIES NETWORK. NO ONE WATCHES THAT SHIT. TAKE THE CASH AND WORK FOR ITV OR SKY. YEA, AND WHY DO ALL BBC NEWSCASTERS LOOK LIKE FREDDIE KRUEGER FOR REALZ… JUST SAYIN.

As great as the BBC is in almost every other way, they do this all the time to older women presenters, right across the programming spectrum. They get rid of a woman once she is in her 50s, yet they have men who present well in to their 80s. Glad that they're being pulled up on this. Unfortunately this isn't just confined to the UK, it's a global thing - a decrepit old guy presenting with a hot young female.

Re: xcalibur – Fail. ITV is for chavs.

I am so glad she won. It is okay for a man to age but for a woman god forbid they would age. It is called discrimination.

Perez, Whats with you and the word "Deplorable"??? Kinda annoying.

  8. 8

Well thank you Perez. Looks like you can write a compassionate argument about women being discriminated against. And there I was thinking you were a complete misogynist with your 'sperminated' crap.

This happens all the time. Good on you, Perez. Women are shoved aside, and those doing it think nothing of it when they should. I'd like to see more older women and their takes on things. They actually know something.

She wasn't an "anchor" she was a presenter on a shitty programme about farming that noone watched!
