Dear Illinois…

WHAT?! This is crazy!

Times are tough all over, but yesterday, lawmakers in Illinois made a pretty drastic change in policy when they passed a new bill that increases the state's personal income tax rate by an astounding 66%.

To date, this is the largest tax increase any state has approved during these hard economic times. (Don't be getting any ideas, California.)

According to reports, this isn't so much of a shock, considering the state's had its "back against the wall" for a long time and really had no other choice.

But geez! 66%! That's so ridiculously high! How are people going to be able to afford that?!

Wow. Sad.

Seriously, a 66% increase does NOT mean their income tax is 66%. Someone needs to take a math class.

  2. 2

This is why I don't pay taxes. It's a waste of your hard earned money!

  3. 3

Why upset, Perez? You're a wealthy democrat. The leader of the Democratic party believes the wealthy should share their good fortune. Are you disagreeing with the leader of the free world???

  4. 4

But you just told us the good news about an improving economy.Did you miss the news that unemployment is up again? Inflation is taking hold and will only get worse (stock up on food now). Think the price of gasoline is going to go down significantly? Aren't the dems asking for the debt ceiling to be raised again? Buy a clue, Perez.

  5. 5

God Damn your fucking stupid. Did you think at all to research before you wrote. Illinois had one of the lowest combined state income tax in the country. Even with the 66% hike, which by the way, comes out to be 1.5% more, they are still at a flat tax rate of 4.5% for ALL incomes. Just so you know, this is also after the gross is adjusted federally, which is not done in most states. This benifits the worker. So, in short, even with this raise in taxes, Illinois still ranks close to the bottom for income tax rates across the country. Man, you are a worthless fuck, get your facts before you run your cocksucker off.

  6. 6

Hold up before you go misinforming EVERYONE. The Tax is going up BY 66% not to 66%. Which means that it's going up from what I hope you'll agree is a reasonably low 3% to around 5%. Not exactly a crushing burden.

  7. 7

Honestly, this is a GOOD idea and I commend the gov't of IL for FINALLY taking action. This will effect the people in IL i'm sure, but if EVERYONE is getting a tax increase, it seems fair.

If every state did this, we might be closer to being out of debt.

On the other side of this, maybe we shouldn't let our senators and representatives run wild with earmarks which make the debt go up in the first place! It's really all up to us!!!

  8. 8

not only was this increase passed, we also have the highest gas prices in the nation. go us. :(

  9. 9

If you spend more money than you have and are unwilling to cut anything, your only solution is to raise taxes which hurts the economy and the hard working middle and upper class who pays MOST of the taxes. Give local business tax incentives to hire and to hire legally and you will see the economy grow. Higher taxes will only hurt the hard working people that are already falling on hard times. Vote Republican - they will cut what we can't afford to avoid tax increases.

  10. 10

are you really this retarded? the rate - on the highest incomes - went from 3 to 5%. god, take a freaking math class.

  11. 11

"While the increase is huge in terms of percentages, the new tax rate of 5% is still lower than most other states. States such as California and Hawaii have top tax rates that exceed 10%, and only about a dozen states continue to enjoy rates under 5%. Under the terms of the bill, the 5% rate is set to expire after four years and return to a rate of 3.75%."

  12. 12

its a 66 percent increase, it doesnt mean their taxes were hiked UP TO 66 percent. But hey this should make you happy Perez. The very same Lib Dems you advocate for are hurting the average American family. But why do you care? You're just another rich Hollywood Dem making tons of money hanging out on red carpets.

  13. 13

Re: miss_michelle6[/re] You should take an economics class.

  14. 14

The gov't of Illinois spends money like it grows on trees and now wants the taxpayers to bail them out…God forbid they cut spending…God forbid people have to walk an extra two blocks to catch a bus…God forbid they stand up to teachers unions…As soon as my boyfriends gets his degree we are outta here! Love Chicago but I am ready to live in a state that has it's shit in order…Utah, Washington, Texas…I am looking at you! Fairtax.org

  15. 15

the tax increased 2.75 percentage points! from 3% to 5.75%… i think you're gonna be confusing people quoting that 66% increase

  16. 16

President Obama did this mess to his home stae and the nation is next. Tax empts to corperations while we are poor and crime increases. Thanks for the recommendation Oprah. You big fat money/fame whore

  17. 17

HOLY CRAP! Thank God I didn't follow my ex-boyfriend there. I bet he wishes he stayed in CA after all. Suck it bitch! HAHAHA But seriously…holy shit. That's so ridiculous. That's like…all the money you work for almost. After the 66% and medical insurance and 401K that leaves nothing left!

  18. 18

Perez, they didn't raise taxes TO 66%… they raised it something like 2% more. Thanks for jumping on the Fox News panic alert.

  19. 19

After reading the comments, I totally agree. Perez misinforming again. What's new. Anyways, maybe you should clarify your article. Thanks.

  20. 20

Perez, why cant you report all the facts. The increase is from 3% to 5%. The state has not increased the tax rate for decades. 2% is a minimal amount to the residents of the state!

  21. 21

it's only 2 percentage points you fat dolt. from 3 to 5% (basic math shows that's a 66% increase over a very low 3%). meanwhile, most states have more than 5%… ohio alone is 6%+, california is 10%.
you clearly don't understand even basic math.

  22. 22

If one can afford it, just get a condo in Nevada or other states where there are no state income tax. With today's real state market, you can get a foreclosed condo in Las Vegas for the price of a car…$30k to $50k and claiim that as your state of residence. I have several properties in CA, AZ, TX, FL and NV and uses NV as my state of residence but live primarily in CA. Family and friends don't even have to go to a hotel since my place is near the strip. Just a suggestion.

  23. 23

I live in Cook County, where Chicago is located. Our taxes are already at 10%, our gas rates are the highest in the nation, and now they raised our state taxes, and we are STILL one of most in-debt states in the nation. I'd move to Wisconsin if it weren't for those horrid Packer fans…

  24. 24

oh yeah, raising the tax from 3% to 5%…no big deal…this isn't monopoly money, people. oh, and those states you reference with higher taxes…guess what…they are all pretty much bankrupt. that's why dems like jerry brown and andrew cuomo are wising up and realizing things like state employees pension plans have to be revamped…play freezes have to happen…more common sense…

  25. 25

Perez, please stay out of politics and economics.

  26. 26

Re: miss_michelle6 – I bet you don't work and have to see how much in taxes is taken out of every paycheck.

I wish when I wanted more money I could increase my paycheck by 66%. Our government is crazy.

  27. ka.06 says – reply to this

Maybe instead of raising the income tax, they should I don't know, leave the taxes alone and cut spending? Just a suggestion. The citizens of Illinois should not have to suffer for the mistakes their corrupt politicians made.

  28. 28

You people ALWAYS miss the point. Taxes going up anywhere by ANY amount [even 1%] is highway robbery. Anytime you pay more for the same service it's something to make a big deal about. My paycheck has NOT gone up BY or TO 3-5% but my rent, gas, interest rate on my credit card has. When you stop living with your parents ( all you mathematicians) you will see "going up by or to" doesn't make any difference in the real world.

  29. 29

they need to open marijuana dispensaries, and tax the needed tax money from there.

  30. 30

I live in Chicago and the whole situation sucks. We pay so much for everything already. Our state has always been messed up cause of crooked politicians. Even though I've lived here my whole life, Im seriously considering moving :(

  31. 31

People deserve the government they vote for.
Illinoisians are experiencing, the "cause and effect" for the people they voted in to office.
Elections have consequences. This is what Dems do.
Increase confiscatory taxes on the people, till they all move to another state, and contaminate that state, by voting for the same old Dems.
Too bad you didn't vote in a Governor like Chris Christie of New Jersey into office.
    New Jersey is coming back!
He's decreased unemployment to 9%, down by .8%, by decreasing the corporate tax for employers.
He has balanced the State budget and told the unions to go pound sand.
Normal police and firemen services have not been cut, and all snow was removed from the streets by 6:00am during the last snow blizzard.
Have fun Illinois. Have fun California. Have fun Michigan.
Unless you change who you vote for, you're pretty much doomed.
Follow New Jersey's example and you will get out of the shitter too!

  32. 32

It went from a pathetic 3% tax rate to a pathetic 5% tax rate. A 66% increase but only 2 percentage points.

No wonder america is broke, people don't want to pay anything to keep it afloat. Now that's patriotism.

  33. 33

This is such good news. It means rich people will pay a little bit closer to their fair share, and poor and homeless people will get more of the services they need. Europeans laugh at how low our taxes are and how much poverty we have.

  34. 34

  35. 35

Taxes are your obligation as a citizen. And if you think any rate that is out there today is high (since they are actually the lowest in history) you should look back at the 50's… The percentages of the top bracket were over 90%.

  36. 36

Banks repossess 1 million homes in 2010.
About 5 million borrowers are at least two months behind on their mortgages.
This is what happens when "hated corporations" and small businesses, that hire you and me, are demonized and stop hiring or go out of business, when the government overtaxes and overregulates — Depression Era Levels of Unemployment.

  37. 37

I nearly shyt myself sitting in my jammies. This story just comfirms what a certified azzhold you truely are.

  38. 38

    Re: Mark Daniel Snyder
You seriously need to check in on European Union finances, like Greece or Ireland.
    They're worse off than Illinois.

  39. 39

The real retards are those saying he wrote the tax is 66%. Nowhere did he write that, Perez just wrote about the 66% INCREASE. Yes I know its still relatively low overall, but if you're going to point something out as wrong, at least learn to read first yourselves!.

  40. 40

fucck illinois. i hate living here.

  41. 41

Re: FlossieBangcock – Well, if you're openly not paying your taxes - I hope you enjoy prison after the IRS finds you. Anywho - I lived in Illinois for 25 years before my husband joined the military and we've since moved. That being said all our friends and family still live in IL and I have YET to hear one complain… to echo everyone else, they're not paying 66% in taxes…sheesh.

  42. 42

Maybe Illinois can start funding its schools again? Bring back those 20,000 school positions cut last year?

  43. 43

Let's get ready now the Republicans are back in the Game : Rich Republicans will get Richer & the rest of the people will get screw !

  44. 44

    I'm glad I left 24 years ago.

  45. 45

    Move to Texas, folks!
Florida is too humid for my taste.
No state income taxes, affordable housing, Dallas/Ft.Worth jobs doing okay!
I do miss San Francisco and Laguna Beach but the state is going down the tubes.
We specifically moved out of California, to a state with no state income tax, (plus Mr. cannottango is from Ft. Worth) and has to balance their state budget annually, by law!
Move to a state with a Republican governor, and never vote Democrat again.

  46. 46

We have NO state income tax in the great state of Wyoming. Wonder why the states that are always in financial dire states are always a shade of blue…

  47. 47

    *dire straits

  48. 48

Re: luvs2tango – Hell yea!! Go Texas! DFW is where it's at.

Welcome to the liberal world of Obama, fools!! Don't you think he'd do the same if he could? Just so he could waste it as fast as he could on his supporters in and outside of America! We have to spread america's wealth outside of our country too, didn't you know?

  50. uyeah says – reply to this

Re: DSummerfan – Hey retard, the Dems are the ones all about increasing taxes. They are BY FAR the richest people in the government. Stay in school and off the bong.

  51. 51

Perez, get a clue! The rate increased from 3% to 5%. The article says, "While the increase is huge in terms of percentages, the new tax rate of 5% is still lower than most other states. States such as California and Hawaii have top tax rates that exceed 10%, and only about a dozen states continue to enjoy rates under 5%. Under the terms of the bill, the 5% rate is set to expire after four years and return to a rate of 3.75%."

Actually, if you can't get a clue, how about just shutting up when you don't understand something?

  52. 52

Better check your facts, Queen. Illinois and other national media outlets are reporting a 5% personal income tax, which is an increase of about two percent from the previous level. I believe the taxes for businesses increased to 7%.

  53. 53

Re: Biebers #1 Fan – The State of Illinois has no control over the other taxes that Chicago decides to impose on it's residents. Ur fault for moving there, so don't bitch!

  54. 54

Half of all states are now suing to stop ObamCare! heh

  55. 55

Re: Chels 44 – Thank you for clarifying this. Fox News and the blow hards who watch have really amped up the ignorance on this issue. I'm really sick of this whole thing.

  56. 56

    Re: hoochpit
    "your" = belongs to you
    "you're" = you are

  57. 57

I don't care what kind of hike it is. 66% which equals going from 3% to 5%… it still sucks for us people in IL. After this new medical bill that is making us being taxed on our medical expenses, then actually paying for medical benefits, then a 7.75% - 10% state tax on any and everything you buy…. Lets not forget the $1 tolls every 5 miles… Then add on the highest gas prices in the nation. Yeah, This state has gone to shit!
I can't wait to get out of this hell whole! But we commend ourselves on having the most corrupt governors for this state! Damn Right this is a "Windy City".

  58. 58

Maybe if the government went through the budget and got rid of the waste and reformed the pension. Then people would not mind paying more in taxes. Illinois has high property tax, highest gas prices, the highest sales tax. We have city and state workers retiring at 55 getting 70k pensions. How bout get your budget in order and get rid of unions. How come know one talks about the lotto? The money from the lotto is supposed to go to schools. That does not go there. People in this state our sick of paying taxes that are just wasted. By the way it cost $5.00 and hour to park in a meter parking spot downtown. Illinois which is 90% made of the Chicago has people paying taxes on everything? So someone who makes 50k a year will nw have to pay an additional $1000.00 that is a huge increase. when u sit back and look at all the different taxes you pay over 50% of what you make!!

  59. 59

The news just keeps getting better:
Our Texas Senator Kay "Sorry Ass, Bailout" Hutchinson is retiring next year.
She knows a Teaparty candidate would beat her badly. YIPPEE
She loves open borders and loves illegals.
Texas will become even stronger with new candidates that are, Conservative Republicans, taking over the State at all levels.
    Buh bye, Kay.
    Thanks for nothing!
If you're head of your household, you must provide for your family's welfare.
Move where there's jobs and growth.
Many of you will lose everything and have to start over.
There's no getting out of the shitter, in states like Illinois.
It's you and your family versus the union bosses.
    Move out.
Move back when there's a Chris Christie governor type, to tame the beast.

  60. 60

I can't wait until the day arrives when I leave this ghetto state. Almost 3 million people in our city and the only jobs available are minimum wage. Many of us use public transit and have to commute very far to get to/from work. My daily commute is 4 hours per day to travel a distance of 18 miles - a straight shot south to north from where i reside.

I used to wok as a temp for the city of Chicago - Revenue Dept. It was a real eye opener to see all the various licenses, permits, inspections, fees, business taxes that the city levees aginst business owners here. Plus… top it off with what Crook County slaps on them too.

The only thing that matters here are the softball politicians who only care about themselves and do for each other, their families and friends. That's where this money will be going.

You wait and see. Crime/Violence will surge even higher here. The government will push their people to the point where you will see what happened in AZ occur here

  61. 61

Perez, no one will ever confuse you with a Einstein, but all they did was hike the rate from 3% to 5%. Yes, it is a 66% increase, FROM 3%. Jesus, did you actually graduate from grade school?

  62. 62

you are a complete fucking idiot. its an increase from 3% to 5%, 66% of 3 is 2, and it was raised 2% DO THE FUCKING MATH
anyone who believes this is a fucking idiot

  63. 63

we cant afford it, at least alot us cant. I don't know the exact numbers on the tax increase, but the taxes were high to begin with. I live in illinois and I work at a development center for children. I don't even get paid minimum wage! Thats how messed up this state is. This is an AWFULL law that is going to cause people to go broke and increase the homeless population. Completely ridiculous.

Re: Bushwack – The wealthy won't be paying it. The corporations won't be paying it. The banks won't be paying it. Their money will be in tax protected shelters. The average Joes and working poor will be paying it. As Re: brez – says, though, the tax rate won't be 66% of taxable income. If you live in Illinois and paid (just for example) 100.00 tax, brez implies you will now pay 166.00, or a little more than 1/3 more than you currently pay.

  65. @v@ says – reply to this

OHhhh, from a 3% to 5%. OK, now I get it.

  66. 66

5% is nothing, in europe most of us pay around 50% tax and people dont bitch and moan about it, i dont get why this is an issue…

  67. 67

u know WHY they raised it perez?!? cuz of all these FREE LOADING LAZY people that mooch off the govt for years and years… all DEMOCRATS want to do is spend spend spend, but take from the people that acually BUST THEIR A$$es and WORK!!!!!

and dont forget the wonderful PENSION system … ALSO paid by tax payers.. they need to re write those contracts, and get on a 401k like everyone.. its bs..
