The U.S. Is Easing Some Cuba Travel Restrictions

Beach vacay in Cuba!!!

The US is going to loosen travel restrictions to Cuba, which will allow for more people, mainly religious and education groups, to travel to the island.

US citizens will also be able to send up to $500 every three months to any Cuban who isn’t connected to the government.

This is fabulous news! Hopefully everyone can plan vacations there in the near future!!

This comment will for sure offend, but this news saddens me. It was nice to have a place to go down south that wasn't full of Americans… I'm not sure how warm the welcome will be.

  2. 2

Perez, you absolutely don't know anything about politics… The US should NOT support this regime in any way….

  3. 3

Bummer. The rest of the world likes to vacation there because it isn't full of Americans. I hope at least the Cubans benefit from this in some way.

  4. 4

I agree sweeeetee: Don't you all rush down there and spoil it, its a beautiful place although full of load Canadians instead of loud Americans!
There are no fast food restaurants so perhaps you won't bother going.

  5. 5

    Gee Mario-
Disinterested party here? Castro's such a nice guy, what about all of the private land that was seized by him, and the nationalization of private companies? You were born in Florida, what happened to the 22,000 criminals and mentally ill patients who landed there in 1980 thanks to Castro? Diplomatic ties were cut off for a reason, as an American, I would not travel there!

  6. 6

Re: missy kitty – l not all of us are loud and not all of us eat fast food. i suggest ur from england..perhaps u should get ur teeth straightened and fixed b4 u make nasty comments about americans.

  7. 7

At long last an intelligent democrat President has taken a step in the right direction. Next step should be to lift the embargo on Cuba, this would really help the people of Cuba, not their government. President Obama is to be congratulated. He never ceases to amaze me, I admire him tremendously. I have been to Cuba many times, the people are the most charming and cheerful in the world, really handsome men and beautiful women. Viva Cuba !

  8. 8

Re: missy kitty – that should be loud Canadians not load!

  9. 9

Re: italianxo – My teeth are fine thanks i had them fixed as a child and unlike you my parents didn't have to remortgage their house to pay for the treatment,it was free.

  10. 10

Wrong move, US. The state of this country is deplorable, and while not the "people's" fault, it will be a mistake to allow any economic contribution there until the government is overthrown. And for everyone else who only cares about "vacation" and a nice place to go…. educate yourselves on the history of this island and then you will understand why it is important not to support them in anyway (right now).

Re: missy kitty – Why are you on an American website? And Canadians are "full of load"!!

  14. 14

Re: missy kitty – or a load of loud Canadians.. (I'm Canadian btw before anyone freaks out)

  15. 15

Re: missy kitty – and don't forget the drunken/burnt brits.. basically us Westerners = obnoxious..

  16. 16

Re: GothamGirl – You're right, it is completely ridiculous that I would enjoy media from any other country from my own. I will now bow my head and slowly remove all sources of information and culture that does not come from my own country of origin….

  17. 17

Why are Americans not "allowed" to go? Guess they aren't as free as they always say they are. Go Canada!

  18. 18

Re: Not my gumdrop buttons! – YOU should start to educate yourself before talking like that about Cuba.

  19. 19

Re: sweeeetee – If Americans interest you, fine, own it. Don't put down a huge and diverse culture, it makes you look like an idiot!

  20. 20

Why would you want to vacay in Cuba? It's a communist country - my father was a political prisoner there in the 60's bc he was fighting against communism - why the hell would I want to give money to that dictator?

  21. 21

We're lucky here in Canada, we can go to Cuba anytime we please. And many Canadians do just that in the wintertime.

  22. 22

Re: sweeeetee – NO, sweeetee…. don't become an American!!!! stay a Canuck!!

  23. 23

Re: GothamGirl – Isn't American the "melting pot" which basically means be like us or get out? Canada is the land of diversity!

  24. 24

Ugh, I'd never want to go to Cuba. My best friend in high school is Cuban and when she went there in the summers I thought she wouldn't return. I'll stick with the Bahamas.

  25. 25

Re: nevamind1 – Exactly, that'd be like taking a vacation to China! Why risk it??

  26. 26

Re: KimInNB – America is a mosaic not a melting pot. And Canada has it's own problems. There are certain things that Canada does better than the US, but it has one tenth the population, with the same land mass. But the bottom line is this - Canada talks incessantly about the US, the US doesn't know or care that Canada exists!

  27. 27

What's with all the anti-American Canadian retards. Yes, we know, you have an arrogant attitude when it comes to us 'lowly' Americans. Fuck off and go play some hockey or something with your sketch bag friends.

    28

Re: missy kitty – Nothing is 'free', sweetie. Not even dental in the U.K. You pay for it one way or another. There are three standard charges for NHS, and if you don't have to pay, then you're on assistance; and that means OTHER people are paying it, for YOU through their taxes. Try doing some reading on it some time. Not only that, but I could go on at length with multiple sordid, sorry tales about just how well the European communities think of vacationing Brits, but I won't if you get your head out and diss your own rather than Americans and Canadians. The Carribean is our vacation turf, and Europe is yours.

  29. 29

Yup, America soon to ruin another country - almost none left to ruin.

    30

Perez, as a Cuban-American, I cannot believe that you are endorsing travel to the communist country that forced your family to become exiles. I am appalled and I refuse to continue reading your blog based on your political standpoint regarding Cuba. I hope your "vacation" to Cuba is not limited to the tourist sections, and you see what Castro has done to the jewel of the Caribbean. Good riddens to your blog!

  31. 31

Who would want to go to that sh!thole?

  32. 32

Why vacation in a place that people are trying to escape from in rafts through shark infested waters? Their government is oppressive and awful.

    P.S. you are a jackass.

  33. 33

Perez,,,here's your chance to visit and help out some of your relatives there and maybe get to know them.

  34. 34

i'd rather go to the jersey shore and fist pump with snooki then go to cuba on vacay anyway.

  35. 35

Re: PROF.Buk0wski ENGLISH PROF OF THE CENTU – Canadians don't care. They fly in, drive to the resort, stay at the resort, drive back to the airport, and fly back to Canada. They are fine with it, if they don't run into a local or an American they've have a lovely trip.

Re: Mad Dog – It's like stepping back to the 1950's. The old cars!, held together with whatever they can manage. It's like time stopped. It's amazing. That's why. Go before they update. You won't believe it.

  37. 37

This should be viewed as WONDERFULl news. There are MANY people deprived of their basic necessities (and rights that every citizen should have such as freedom of speech) because of embargoes that were placed on Cuba by our American government many years ago. Both Castro and the United States are to blame. Its all just politics. It saddens me that people will comment on here and spew out their vile and hateful comments regarding a certain country or race. We are all human and should respect one another.

I am a Cuban American and am fully aware of the history of the country. Things are not always what they seem. I urge you to dig deeper and educate yourself before you begin to comment so ignorantly.

  38. 38

    Re: Not my gumdrop buttons!

I also recommend that you brush up on your history of Cuba as well. The reasons that prompted Castro and others like him to overthrow the Cuban government in the first place was the monopolization of American companies taking over the Cuban island. As always, The United States has to get involved in another countries affairs and try to dictate what is "best" for them, when in reality the U.S. was looking out for their best interest. However, I will state that I do not condone what Castro and the U.S. has ultimately done to Cuba.

  39. 39

Re: GothamGirl – The US has the same landmass as Canada? Really? You might want to check that.

  40. 40

Re: chicpea – You might want to check that. Sq Km US = 9,629,091
    Canada = 9,976,140
    Population Density #/sq km US = 31 Canada = 3
Exactly what I said in my post #26, and that was from memory, I did look it up, and my memory is correct.

As an American who has been to Cuba twice through Educational Visas, this news is bittersweet. The Cubans I met were so nice and I know that tourism dollars will help them, but it was so beautiful I dont want our people to go down there and mess it up. Im glad right now its just religious and educational groups going, and that businesses still arent allowed.

Supporting the regime and supporting the people suffering from the regime are two different things btw. The people were nice enough to tell us that they dont judge Americans by what the government chooses to do, maybe we should return that sentiment!

And to Sweeeetee….Being there showed me that its not just the Americans who are loud thanks. Canadians were terrible as well as the Germans! Maybe worse than American tourists.

Living near Bali now though I can tell you that even worse than Americans on vacation are the Aussies. They are 10x worse than we Americans are lol. Just sayin!

  42. 42

Re: chicpea – So sad when that happens…

Re: chicpea – Yeah its close. I think youre forgetting about Alaska. That bitch is HUGE! ;)

  44. 44

Re: sweeeetee – You're right. I was there and it full of obnoxious drunk Brits and Canadians. The Americans (myself and 2 friends) were trying to get away from THEM! The British are notorious for being the worst travellers in the world, because they get drunk and cause problems - Americans don't!

  45. 45

Re: @v@ – You're 100% correct. Europe (especially Spain) hates the Brits. They have no one else to make fun of, since they're the butt of everyone's jokes in Europe, so they insult us.

  46. 46

Re: Stepy – I agree, Stepy… from travelling extensively, I've found Americans aren't the obnoxious ones at all. They aren't notorious for getting drunk and causing problems. They are usually the ones quietly sitting back and enjoying the culture while other nationalities get drunk and loud. The figures for the number of arrests of Brits made while they're on vacation is FAR higher than that of Americans.

  47. 47

Re: KimInNB – Are you saying the US is less diverse? Canada has around an 18% non-white population, while the US is around 35%! Growing up in the US, I feel like not only did I experience American culture, but also Hispanic and other cultures. I'm sure people who are from other areas grow up with a rich diversity of culture as well.
And, the US is clearly a mosaic, as the above poster has pointed out.

  48. 48

I[m sure Tio Fidel will be happy to see you, Mari. Oh sorry, didn't you exclusively report that he was dead?
Some of those Cubans are going to make a lot of money selling their old 50's cars to collectors. Teresita and Babs can visit the girls at the cigar factory.

  49. 49

Re: LazaroSi3333 – You are an idiot for thinking Obama is doing this for anyone but himself. Communism anyone? It's dumbed down idiots like you that got us that loser in the white house.

  51. 51

Re: getcheeky – Absolutely. As a Canadian with strong ties to Europe and America and who has traveled extensively in Cuba, I think it's fair to say that at most all-inclusive resorts, there's gunna be a sh*t ton of drunk arseholes. Country of origin aside, people get loaded at these things. Drinks are endless. C'mon guys. I know we can get just as rowdy as Americans, Brits, Irish, what have you.
Forget your selfish sh*t and all this communism government talk, and think about the people born into that country who benefit from tourists. I have made close friends in Cuba who I visit during every trip, I certainly do NOT stay in my hotel and ignore the Cubans. They have a beautiful diverse culture just like any other place. Just because they are born into a communist country does not mean these people are bad or their culture is shameful.

Though, I do have to agree with the fact that America tends to lend its "helping hand" in a recognized obtrusive manner. Thus, the word "Americanize". Look it up. You won't find "Canadianize", or "Europeanize" anywhere. That being said, I don't think that speaks ill of the American population.

  52. 52

American's crack me up, they piss and moan about this but have no trouble giving away their jobs and FREE TRADE TO COMMUNIST CHINA!
If Cuba is lucky the hypocritical Americans will stay away and spoil it's shoreline like they have everywhere else.

  53. 53

America land of the free citizens need permission to travel to another country? Okay that is just Goddamn funny!

  54. 54

My family has travelled to Cuba many a time, pristine beaches, if you've not been shut your ignorant American pieholes.

  55. 55

We should be able to travel there already!! It's about time.
I do agree with those of you that say that everybody in the world likes to travel there, especially because American's cant go there but I'm sure the retarded "I love 'merica" people wouldn't go down there to commie land. Lets hope they stay put and leave this gorgeous island for those who can appreciate it.

  56. 56

    Re: cap chick
A regime??? Do YOU know ANYTHING about politics?? Or are you too busy reading American propoganda??

  57. 57

    Re: GothamGirl
And what land did they nationalize?? YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT, CUBAN LAND. THEY TOOK THEIR LAND BACK BECAUSE THE US WAS RAPING THEM. But you wouldn't know that sitting in your cozy 'merican bubble now would you?

  59. 59

    Re: italianxo
I'm from the US and I travel quite a bit and EVERYBODY looks at Americans as loud and obnoxious. EVERYBODY! It's pretty sad, you try to tell them not all of us are this way and then, bam, you get a loud ass american screaming in a bar, "You can't treat me this way, I'm American, Yeah haw!"
    It's sad but true.

  60. 60

    Re: getcheeky
THANK YOU!!! American's have been fed propoganda that Cuba is bad for decades now. The truth is that they don't let themselves be man handled by America, so we paint them out to be evil and horrible. I really wish people would research before they open their big ignorant mouths!

  61. 61

pretty sure it wasn't he law that was stopping me from going to cuba, im pretty sure it was the fact that they hate americans and i don't want to go to a country that fucking hates me. i doesn't even matter anyways, im not originally from the US, so i can bled in speaking diff european languages. But there are SO many other places to go if you want to vacay, the only people that will take this offer is crazy ass journalists

  62. 62

Re: OhBigDeal – Please, Spain is a dump now because of the British drunkards… at least in America we keep our drunk white trash residents vacationing in Florida and don't send them abroad.

  63. 63

Re: doritozzz – The law doesn't say you can't go to Cuba. It says you're not allowed to spend money earned in America in Cuba. They can't stop you from hopping on the direct United flight from Miami to Havana. The Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional to restrict an American from travelling to Cuba.
