Holy shiz. This is HUGE.

Paul Lieberstein, producer of The Office, dropped a BOMB earlier today when he revealed that Ricky Gervais, who created the UK Office and played the character that ultimate inspired Steve Carrell's role, filmed a cameo as David Brent for the series that will air in the cold open of the January 27th episode!

And he's kept this on the DL since September, because that's apparently when the scene was filmed!

He reveals:

"It's a little more than if you blink, you'll miss it, but if you don't set your TiVo right, you'll miss it. Ricky had wanted to do something [with the U.S. Office] and it felt like we shouldn't go the whole series without them connecting. But we had some issues to work out, like how does David Brent live in the world of Michael Scott. It's outside of the office, and it's just the two of them interacting. It's just a llittle nod to Steve and his final year. We didn't even tell NBC at first. So [Ricky] worked for free. But don't print that — it might get him in trouble with the INS."

Ha! This is absolutely amazing!

Such a nice way to pay homage to the original series, without it compromising the reality of the US version!

At least we hope! We'll remain cautiously optimistic until it airs!

What do U think?? Are U excited for Ricky's appearance on The Office??

    I approve of this.

What do you mean Ricky Gervaise 'loosely originated' Steve Carrel's character. Ricky Gervaise made the Office - literally and figuratively. The show was remade in the US copied from the ORIGINAL British version. Tho for a remake, the US one is fantastic, almost as good as the original

Re: shoppergirl – Thank you! I was literally going to write what you wrote word for word, "loosely originated" that's too funny

Re: shoppergirl – Thank you! "Loosely based"??? Perez, WTF?

  7. 7

I agree with everyone else–"loosely originated"?? Do you even watch the show? Have you ever even seen the original British version? He didn't "loosely originate" anything, he created the show and its characters. Michael Scott IS David Brent. The first eps of the American version copied the British script word for word for cripes sake.

What they said already, again… "loosely originated"? Who writes this crap?

  9. 9

Knew this would happen at some point. Can't wait!

Gervaise MIGHT have even done a better job at being an dufus/asshole/insecure/purposely-unaware/ignoramus boss than Steve Carrel did - and that's saying a great deal. Steve is outstanding, really he is, but I don't think he would have got the jist of the character he plays if it were not for Gervaise's uncanny performance of every horrible trait we have all ever seen in all the bosses in our lives.

Ricky Gervais is soooo much cooler than Steve Carrell.

Hello - Ricky was the originator!
Totally looking forward. Especially after his "roast" at the Globes.
    Now THAT was so classic!

I don't get the whole Ricky Gervais thing. I don't find him funny in the least bit. He's Don Rickles without the charm but with a British accent.

uh yes…of course i'm happy i think that ricky gervais is funny and with him acting along side steve carrell's 'michael scott' it should be way funny. i just WISH that SC wasn't leaving :(
