Introducing Marvel's Next Superhero…The Black Panther!

| Filed under: Film FlickersWesley Snipes

marvel making black panther movie

No, this isn't a gritty version of those silly Steve Martin detective movies…but it's probs almost time for them to reboot THAT franchise as well! LOLz.

Marvel Studios has begun development on their new film Black Panther. The story revolves around a "king of a resource-rich fictional African country who becomes a super hero."

For those of you out there who aren't up on your obscure-comic-book-character knowledge, the Black Panther first arrived in a 1966 Fantastic Four comic, and is renowned for being the "first black hero in mainstream comics."

Apparently, Columbia took a shot at a Black Panther movie in the early '90s with Wesley Snipes, but things didn't work out for the film or for Wesley.

Should be an inneresting project, especially because the writer, Mark Bailey, is known for his writing credits on documentaries including Pandemic: Facing AIDS and Ghosts of Abu Ghraib.

We're not sure exactly what to expect with this one, but our curiosity has been piqued.

Are U intrigued by the Black Panther?

"Are U intrigued by the Black Panther? "

    Not at all.

If it was never a very popular comic to begin with then what makes them think that it'll suddenly do well in the movies?

If they don't screw it up like they've already screwed First Class up. It will be interesting but at this point I have little to no faith in Hollywood.

Re: Scatter – I agree, they just keep rebooting the comic and it never sells.

loved black panther. i always used to pretend to be him as a kid. it was great having a superhero that looked like me. i'm diggin' it.

I hate to be the one to say it but I really believe that they only reason that we're reading about this is because Hollywood is desperate to have a movie about a black superhero. It's not because he's an interesting character deserving of a movie.

This is a pretty obscure character. From what little I remember about him, he wasn't all that interesting. Hard to imagine a full-length feature with a superhero most people have never heard of. What tool at the studio thought this was a good idea?

Here's my idea: make up new superheroes, not based on an existing comic book character. Think about it. Writers wouldn't be limited to the character's history, because he/she wouldn't have one.

It might do okay. Honestly I didn't know that Blade was a comic book character like most people but with the right actor in the role it can do well. Blade 1 and 2 kicked ass.

Sure, lets see how this turns out, it still looks kind of creepy to me, but i love Marvel comics so i'll give this one a try.

too fringe. it might do as well as daredevil.

Kinda like a transsexual Catwoman on steroids.
