Captain America: The First Avenger…Coming Soon To Russia, South Korea, & the Ukraine!

captain america to change title in some countries

Looks like this will be a controversial move with hardcore Captain America fans, as well as Patriots everywhere.

The upcoming Marvel superhero movie Captain America: The First Avenger will have a much less patriotic title in South Korea, Russia, and the Ukraine.

In the countries we mentioned above, the title will be shortened to The First Avenger, which is a decision that was based on political factors "market research results."

Looks like the full title was cool with most countries, but Marvel, Paramount, and international distributors decided to make the change for the countries we listed.

Here's what the film's director Joe Johnston had to say about Captain America's international appeal:

“He wants to serve his country, but he’s not this sort of jingoistic American flag-waver. He’s just a good person. We make a point of that in the script: Don’t change who you are once you go from Steve Rogers to this super-soldier; you have to stay who you are inside, that’s really what’s important more than your strength and everything. It’ll be interesting and fun to put a different spin on the character and one that the fans are really going to appreciate … the idea that this is not about America so much as it is about the spirit of doing the right thing. It’s an international cast and an international story. It’s about what makes America great and what make the rest of the world great too.”

And here's what competitor/X-Men:First Class director Matthew Vaughn had to say about it:

“It’s going to be interesting to see how the movie does internationally with that character’s name. I think changing it is smart.”

We understand the reasoning for changing the title, but then again, he IS Captain America. They can shorten the title, but they can't very well change his name in the movie…unless they went more generic and called him Captain Planet.

We see no reason why that would be a problem.

Ha!

Do U think it's okay for them to change the title to appease certain countries? Or should it be the same everywhere?

Can you PLEASE stop referring to Ukraine as the Ukraine? It is not THE Ukraine. As a fellow ethnic you should know better as it is incredibly insulting. Get educated and stop.

  3. 3

We already have a Captain Britain.

  4. 4

I bet most of the people in these countries couldn't give a shit if it's called Captain America or not, as long as it doesn't have a scene in it like in Spider-Man where he poses against the American flag - that was PURE CRINGE.

ITS NOT THE UKRAINE!!!!!!! people are so ignorant. its Ukraine. simply Ukraine. you dont go around saying The America. Or the Canada. so seriously. Perez change that because i am Ukrainian and this is extremely insulting and others feel the same as well.

It's not a big deal, there's a whole planet full of people who aren't Americans and they don't want our flag pushed on them. If the core of his message is patriotism, not Americanism, than who ares if his name changes?

who cares! I'm American, but I don't give a crap about this movie. it's probably going to suck. one thing I always find hilarious is how people say they don't like Americans, but they're asses love to watch American movies, TV shows and listen to American music. WTF is up with that?!

everyone wants to bash America until we have to save their ass from some tyrant and then they say what the hell took you so long.

He can't be called Captain Planet because there IS a Captain Planet. Did you not ever watch Saturday morning cartoons?

well, captain america doesn't have the same ring it used to…. given that we're not on top of the world anymore. so change it to whatever.

PS, ukraine does not need an article in front of it. it is no longer 'the ukranian ssr'.
