The list is getting bigger and bigger!

First it was Taco Bell and GM. And now, Wrigley and H&R Block are the latest companies to pull their ads from MTV's racy teen drama, Skins.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Wrigley said:

"Wrigley has decided to suspend any advertising during MTV's Skins as it was never our intent to endorse content that could offend consumers. Any ads that previously aired during the show were part of a broader advertising plan with the network."

Meanwhile H&R Block says that their ads were never supposed to run during the show, adding:

"H&R Block is not an advertiser of the show. One ad ran by mistake as part of a rotation. Once we learned this, we immediately took steps to ensure it didn't happen again. This program is not brand right and H&R Block did not select it to be part of our rotation."

Ouch!

The Parents Television Council has called the show "the most dangerous television show for children that we have ever seen" and has urged advertisers to pull their ads.

MTV responded to all the criticism, saying:

"We review all of our shows and work with all of our producers on an ongoing basis to ensure our shows comply with laws and community standards. We are confident that the episodes of Skins will not only comply with all applicable legal requirements, but also with our responsibilities to our viewers.

We also have taken numerous steps to alert viewers to the strong subject matter so that they can choose for themselves whether it is appropriate."

All this controversy is just creating more buzz for the show! The show may have limited advertisers, but it's sure to have higher ratings now.

How over dramatic.Nip Tuck And the original skins is a billion times better than this and is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more graphic.

  2. 2

doesn't matter what the ratings are if no one is willing to advertise during the show. MTV will have to sell advertising to extenz and trojans… and won't get top dollar for it.

  3. 3

Remember when you were 16? If something was banned by a TV station or a radio station - you HAD to listen to it. Same thing here - United Christian Mummies of the United States telling kids not to watch a TV programme will ONLY make them watch it. The people behind Skins (a Dad and Son team in the UK) could not be happier with this press. Keep it up - I'm going to start watching myself : )

  4. 4

As much as I despise the US remake.. This parents council needs to chill out. The more you hide things from teenagers the more they want it.

  5. 5

Isn't this similar to what happened with Jersey Shore? And now look at it, it's in season three. All this controversy is just going to get more people to tune in to see what all the fuss surrounding Skins is about. It'll be a hit.

  6. 6

    Lool, bit of an over-reaction??

  7. 7

Idea, MTV, why don't you.. I don't know.. play music? Or better yet just change the name of the station, because at this point, it's false advertising.

  8. 8

I have no desire to watch this show. All of MTV's shows are lame and only produce lame people that, unfortunately, become minor celebrities that we have to see on magazine covers for years afterward.

  9. 9

I guess living in the US is like living in Iran.
Not much of a difference for the Americans.

  10. 10

    Re: galleon10 – Agreed!

  11. 11

At the end there Perez does have a point…. It is just creating free marketing for this show.

  12. 12

I love UK Skins!!! I hate that all the little mommys and daddys are having a fit because they dont want their little "angels" to watch a show with such awsomeness in it!! Parents! Your kids are probley doing the same shit the kids in this show are doing. Its not like their learning anything from it. The show is just showing us how alot of teenagers are. If you dont like this show. BAN IT FROM YOUR TV'S!! Dont ruin it for all the other people who like it.

  13. 13

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This US version is tame compared to what the show here in the UK! Americans are so over dramatic about shit like this. If they're going crazy about this US one, they'd have a seizure watching the UK version!

  14. 14

Most parents that get all uppity about this stuff and call press conferences/start petitions ironically are bad parents. They are blind. Thinking their kids are angels. All shit like this is doing is drawing more attention to the show, making kids want to watch it even more.

It's funny how idiotic these parents are but are so delusional they think they are good parents. When they can't even realize the most basic things controversy stirs up ratings and makes it more popular.

Shows shouldn't have to be censored for the rest of us just because a small fraction of parents want shit censored. Obviously their whole "ZOMG CENSOR IT NOW" doesn't work. Teen STD and pregancy is on the wise, the internet is flooded with girls taking nude pics of themselves.

Don't blame people, networks, music, movies, shows for YOUR and YOUR child's mistakes. Education starts at home. It's your job to teach them right from wrong. If they make a mistake hopefully it doesn't cost them. Instead of saying "ZOMG BAN/CENSOR THIS SHOW" you should be saying "Ok, Don't get caught up in drugs, go to school and if you do have sex WEAR A CONDOM"

This generation of people shouldn't be parents.

  15. 15

Actually it's given parents the "buzz". Head's up; MTV wants your kids to wind up miserable. See Perez, although you are considered an adult by age, most well adjusted, happy adults do not sit around watching MTV. The "buzz" help's responsible folks have yet another heads up regarding the constant crap being shoved at our kids.

  16. 16

Re: zobiana – umm MTV U.S. is no longer music television in case you hadnt noticed they took off the bottom part of the logo…im other countries its still music television because they still play music

  17. 17

this show is garbage. i love how everyone in the uk praises this show..it shows the class of people over there and explains why people like amy winehouse and pete doherty are the way they are.

  18. 18

Re: Kate2293 – Not all Americans are so up-tight and going crazy about this show. The PTC definitely doesn't represent the entire US. Those people have nothing better to do than bitch about anything and everything that doesn't agree with their personal lifestyle choices. I could care less about the content of this show. I say let it air, and the ratings will decide it's fate. If someone's too stupid to differentiate real-life from some tv show and justify doing something bad because some character on tv did it, then they're morons.

  19. 19

Umm, they are called "The Parents Television Council" fro a reason. It is their JOB to look out for possibly inappropriate shows and help other parents be aware of them. Kinda of like its your jobs to blog about celebrities and their private lives no matter how inappropriate that may seem to other people, you still do it. If they "chill out", they are not doing their job. I don't think this controversy will bring up the ratings, at least i hope not, because the commercials alone for this show is horrid.

  20. 20

why does mtv feel the need to totally lower the general level of class in this country?? pregnant teens, drunk guidos and now this? isn't it possible to have interesting programming about people that aren't scumbags?

  21. 21

and for everyone quacking about how the UK version is so much more graphic… have you LIVED in England? I have and recently. the British youth are vile, repulsive, chav twats. not really something to aspire to being — or watching.

keep it classy, people. kids emulate what they see on tv. isn't it possible to take tv programming up a notch?? the same goes for all the gross ncis/bones rubbish… that is just murder porn. i'm not up for censorship, but jebus!! can't the tv execs at least CONSIDER that tv programming could be entertaining and lift morale around this wreck of a country??

  22. 22

Can anyone please tell me what is the sex of the person sitting to the left with the white and purple dress on?

  23. 23

Skins the U.S. version is a lot cleaner than the U.K. version..

I think its a lot better than watching pregnant 16 year olds…I felt that that show was more dangerous to viewing because it encouraged some young girls to go get pregnant!LAME!!

  24. 24

The controversy may be good for ratings, but it cant compensate for the fact none of the cast can act and the director missed the point of the show.

  25. 25

Re: italianxo – not everyone in the uk"praises this show, the reason it was so popular in the first place was because we were finally getting to see something closer to real teenage life rather than shows like 90210 (i actual;ly like that so not hating on it) who show glamour and things that normal teens just do not have. Skins is a good show about reality in season 3 and 4 they went a bit too far and over the top but it shows that we're young and we're meant to make mistakes otherwise we'll never learn anything

everyone needs to stop being so judgemental. if your so bothered just dont watch it.

  26. 26

I think this will kinda be like Jersey Shore, remember no one watched it and then Snooki got punched and everyone condemned it so all the viewers tuned in.

  27. 27

Re: Elilan – Agree 100%. Why have to show the worst of people instead showing that you can actually suceed if you work for it. They only show lazy bump teens with as equal useless brains which are being burnt by drugs and teens getting pregnant without the notion at all of what is to be a mother and having to take care of a child. The worst part is that we ADULTS with our jobs have to support these kind of useless teens who just leech of our taxes. We are making more useless humans rather than useful succesful ones.

  28. 28

i haven't seen the american version (english and all) but i can say that when skins first start i was 16. and whilst i absolutely loved the show and thought it bought light to problems a large amount of teens go through (and do not say because of television. things like bullying, abuse, racism are much bigger contributors) whilst i loved the idea of the 'skins party' as it is known, it didnt make me go out there and do shed loads of drugs and sleep around to have a good time. it made me realise i can have just as good a time with a few drinks and friends.

and to the biggoted woman who seems to think that TV shows are the reason behind chavs (and i wont deny there are a lot in england) is delusional. do you think they are sitting around watching fucking TV? they are out there causing trouble. druggies, thieves all of them do not sit around at watch TV. if you ever watched any sort of documentaries on recovered users you would know that. but you are too busy sitting there slating a TV show you haven't seen, living in a country as a tourist, not a national. and mostly, having not grown up in this day and age. i am 20 years old and seeing shocking things on television makes me realise I am very lucky to have a proper job, earn my own money and be able to enjoy things such as skins without thinking 'oh this is what real fun and real life is'

dont blame producers, tv or children for the youth of today, blame you, the parents.

  29. 29

The show isn't dirty. It's Skins. What else would it be? BUT… The UK Skins is way better. The US Skins is just a big copy. The words they say on US Skins do not make sense, because originally british people are saying them. British talk is different than American talk. And that's why some people don't like it.

PS. Most people do not know that Skins was and still is originally a show from the UK.

  30. 30

…Wrigley is prob a bunch of fat old f uck s! Bring on the skin. Thin is in!

  31. 31

I understand the outrage, but this stuff happens. I remember when I was in high school in San Diego's north county, the obsession was weed. I graduated in 2005. Shortly after high school those same people moved on to cocaine. I haven't seen ecstasy but I know that it's huge with the gay kids or anyone else who's in to sex parties. I think this show is glamorizing it. I understand that this is real but this is shameless promotion to the ten, eleven, and twelve year olds who stay up at night. We don't need more diseased drug addicts in this world.

  32. 32

didn't these advertisers do their research?
after all those RACY ads, I imagined the show soo much more naughty. the result was tame/unfortunately kinda lame.. and the advertisers would be better off by just laying low and waiting for either high ratings or cancellations….. duh.

  33. 33

ahhh yes the forbidden fruit theory… the more you tell people not to do something the more they will do it.. we all want control and we hate not being in control. But regardless of rating, if they don't have advertisers they wont have show

  34. 34

i dont see what the big deal is i don't think the show was that raunchy and i don't think it was very good either.

  35. 35

    its rated tv-MA for a reason….

  36. Bren says – reply to this

    36

So let me get this straight… they obviously knew who they were advertising with… thought it was great until all the controversy started then all of a sudden they pull their advertising when it gets hot… can you say hyprocrite?

  37. 37

Re: fickdichpogmothoin! – That is a girl. Really. She is boyish and ugly, so I can understand your confusion. Actually, I think they're all ugly. Blech, these people and this show repulse me. I know that they're actors and all, but they seem really gross to me. Grosser than Snooki, if you can believe that.

  38. 38

ALL THEY DO IN THE UK IS DO DRUGS. THAT'S ALL THEY DO!! SIT AROUND DOING DRUGS AND "GURNING". IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS, LOOK IT UP ON YOUTUBE AND HAVE FUN WATCHING THESE EUROPEAN IDIOTS!!!

  39. 39

I thought that the show was pretty lame… I didn't know many 16 year old girls in high school that were willing to take someone's virginity just cuz. When the singing started I changed the channel.. It's kind of like a sucky version of degrassi.

  40. 40

The problem is that the US version only took the drugs/vices from the UK Skins. There isn't any originality or heart to the story anymore. I'd pull my ad's just because the acting was so bad in US Skins…

  41. 41

I agree that this show shouldn't be on the air but these companies pulling their ads are all full of shit. They knew what they were putting their ads on before all this controversy. Its only now after all the bad press that they want to distance themselves from the show. Where were their morals when they put their ads on this show in the first place?

  42. 42

im sure these advertisers knew what type of show this was to begin with just looking at the commercials we knew. And yup all this hype is just going make people tune in. I already fell into it and watched the first episode online but you know what. it didnt change my mind. It wasn't as bad but the storyline was pretty pathetic trying to get some little boy laid. and the comedy was stupid. and the acting was bad. all in all i dont think the complaining of people will get it off air but just the lack of wanting to pay attention to this show will. it isn't even good.

  43. 43

This show is terrible why would you remake it with less attractive and less talented people

  44. 44

Re: catloverRe: Masterbucket – They are all average looking people. Thats kind of one of the main points of the show..Just to show regular kids that engage in those activities. It's not 90210 or Gossip girl where everybody looks like a model.

Re: Bren – Anytime a parent says crap about this kind of stuff but fails to realize very basic stuff as to how PR/Advertisement works I instantly exclude their opinions. This is planned by companies. GM? This appeals to younger people so buying cars for most of them would be hard. Which is why GM waited so long. They are jumping on the bandwagon to pull their ads. It goes public. They look good in the eyes of parents (the ones that can actually buy the cars lol) and get tons of FREE advertisement on this controversy. Like I said, the PTC and shit getting all up in arms is DOING NOTHING except bringing more attention to the show. That's it. They fail to realize this. Just like Tiger Woods on all his endorsements. They will sponsor him again once everything dies down. They did it solely for PR purposes.

  45. 45

time to pull it off the air

  46. 46

Who cares about the "porn"? The most offensive part of the show is what a rubbish remake of the UK version it is.

  47. 47

Re: Elilan – Haha yeah, because we are ALL like that XD Where were you living, exactly? :P

  48. 48

Re: Jumperchu – HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG these 'I know what English people do all day - look at me!" Comments just get funnier and funnier. Never touched a drug or alcohol in my live, sweetheart, and I'm as English as they get. Can say the same for my friends too and, oh, just about everybody else I know. Seriously, though, how did you come up with that one? It was just plain ridiculous! XD

  49. 49

    Re: catlover – Thank you!

  50. 50

The only reason that they are pulling their ads is because for the first time we have people who look their age playing the part. This is reality people, this is what your children are doing. So rather than run from it, take it as an open voyeur into the lives that your children are living. People are brainwashed and think that 16 year olds look like Blake Lively, or Mischa Barton. Get real those girls are like way older and playing younger parts. This is a studio ploy to be able to do more risque segments. and now that the people playing the parts actually look 16 everyone is up in arms. Realize how censored you are America.

  51. 51

"The Parents Television Council"? jajaja.. In peru, we don´t have this, IT´S NECESSARY, tough. This version sucks anyways, well at least the first episode …

  52. 52

There couldn't be a more retarded television show. I am all for reality tv, even REALLY bad reality tv, but this is a whole 'nother level of awful. "if you grab me a bag full of narcotics, I will screw your brains out" says the psychopathic crazed jonesing bag of whore.
