Alan Cumming Vs. Richard Chamberlain

alan cumming vs richard chamberlain

Following in the footsteps of Will & Grace co-creator Max Mutchnick, gay actor Alan Cumming has put actor Richard Chamberlain in his place.

While he may be gay himself, Chamberlain advises gay actors to stay in the closet due to the "tremendous amount of homophobia in our culture."

Alan does NOT agree. Here's what he said in response:

"I think it's so mean-spirited. If you're living a lie, that's not healthy, and I think it is really irresponsible of [Chamberlain]…to say these things."

Alan ALSO slams Rupert Everett, who shares Chamberlain's views about gay actors playing heterosexuals.

More from Alan:

"It's not about your work… It's about how you exist as a person in the world, and the idea that your work is more important than you as a person is a horrible, horrible message. I always think about a little gay boy in Wisconsin or a little lesbian in Arkansas seeing someone like me, and if I cannot be open in my life, how on earth can they? Anyway, it's an academic question: how can you know [that coming out affects your career]? Some people get less work than others, and it has nothing to do with sexuality."

Right on, Alan! We LOVE what you're saying here and we wholeheartedly agree!

Thoughts???

Alan was married and closeted for quite some time, so he really has no room to talk. It wasn't until after he was known that he came out. The sad truth is, people who don't come out get more roles than those who do. While that may not be right, that's how it is. There really is no reason for anyone to discuss which gender they're interested in, unless they want to. Anyone who tries to out others (*COUGH*PEREZ*COUGH*) should be ashamed of themselves. It's a private matter and if someone wants it to remain that way, that's their business.

Bet we there's some scientology loving actors that need to spring out of the closet.

Cumming may be living out and proud, but he rarely works. Sadly.

Typical young upstart who refuses to abide the wisdom of his elders.

I've been out for 15 years and have gotten no heterosexual roles. Well except for hockey fan. Go Kings!

He not only proves to be proud of himself he put's himself first. That's not selfish that's only good for one. He is right and I agree, plus he's amazing on screen and in theatre. Saw him on stage in NY and he was amazing.

CUMMINGS PLAYS HIMSELF, A GAY CHARACTER ON THE GOOD WIFE. SO OF COURSE (SINCE HE HAS A JOB) HE SAYS IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO COME OUT. WHAT A RETARD!! JUST WAIT WHEN THE SERIES GETS CANCELLED AND SEE HOW ROLES HE GETS. WHAT A DOUCHE BAG. STILL DOESNT UNDERSTAND HOLLYWOOD DOES HE… LAME FUCKTARD.

The problem is Alan is a very unlikable person both in the parts he plays and in real life. He is from the being gay is being obnoxious school IMHO. He is a huge turnoff. Richard is a very nice person.

    Different generations.

Is Alan Cummings playing straight heterosexual LEADING MEN roles on films with a love interest who is a straight heterosexual female? Hardly! Richard Chamberlain was talking about not coming out of the closet if you want a career playing straight heterosexual LEADING MEN roles on films with romantic roles with straight heterosexual female actors.

OK, there's a huge problem with Richard Chamberlain's argument about staying in the closet - is there anyone who DIDN'T know he was gay? I mean, back when Joan Rivers was hella funny and not mostly made of silicone, she was CONSTANTLY taking shots at him for being gay. CONSTANTLY. It's not like it was a shock when he came out, which was within the last 5-6 years, wasn't it? He wasn't exactly getting leading man roles anymore. And when he WAS in leading man mode, it was the 60s and 70s, when that sort of thing WAS the kiss of death. I don't think so anymore. Rupert Everett should clam up and worry about what the hell he's done to his face and how THAT is impacting his career. And Alan Cumming, who is an adorable little Scottish elf and can act the shirt off just about everyone, is right. It shouldn't matter.

Gay/Straight!!!!Who cares it's about the performance He/She gives in acting isn't it?
I think in the UK they are more liberal with their thinking than in the States..
