Sad! People Of Color Shut Out Of All Major Oscar Nominations!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooFilm FlickersAwardz

This is very unfortunate and disappointing.

Despite some very talented individuals receiving well-deserved nominations this year for Academy Awards, ZERO people of color were recognized in any of the major categories - including acting, writing, and directing!

Such a shame!

We sincerely hope that filmmakers keep this in mind during upcoming projects this year, because this should have never happened, and there will be no excuse if it happens again next year.

Name a person of color that deserves it this year. Please, do it. I'm so tired of this bullshit, as if everyone is racist or homophobic. You have to have examples to strengthen your case. Just saying it should not happen is bullshit. It's just you talking heads trying to be overly liberal. Your fucking idiots. Give us examples of people of color in movies this year that are worthy.

  2. 2

I can't think of any films with any memorable negro involvement…

  3. 3

is it at all possible that maybe it wasn't a shut-out, maybe just there was no one of color nominated because no one of color did a job good enough to be nominated for?????

    what a concept.

  4. 4

I'm sorry…I didn't realize color was a qualifying factor in winning an academy award? I would like to think the Academy judged the actors/actresses based on their performances NOT their skin color! We need to stop throwing the race card when it's not warranted. There is legit discrimination in this country. Let's not cry wolf.

  5. 5

Why are you starting trouble. You look for talent. PERIOD!!! Stop trying to start a fucking race war, you dumb asshole.

  6. 6

Why are you making this about race? Maybe no 'people of color' were nominated because none earned a spot in any categories. The nominations are based off of talent, colored people don't get special recognition, and there is no immediate action shit going on here. If you never want something like this to happen, try starting a petition for best person of color. Fucking idiot.

  7. 7

omg. really?!?! i'm sure it's not intentional. it's just a freaking conincidence. stop being so fucking dramatic, p. how about the gays? how about women? how about the disabled, the immigrants? everyone has been discriminated against for something in their lifetime and/or throughout history. not everything is a conspiracy. sometimes it's just the way it is.

  8. 8

arent we past this horse shit yet ???? why are u still singling out people for their ethnicity ? so u want people to be nominated just because their latin or black ?
isn't that just as racist as the shit drama that ur trying to start ?

  9. 9

Hollywood is racist. I dont think big companies like Paramount or Disney are its the casting directors that are racist. A lot of the time casting directors tell actors/actresses "Caucasian only" or "Caucasian preferred" when they were never told to do so. There were many good films with ethnic actors & actresses last year that deserved to get nominated. As long as your white & you have a huge name like Johnny Depp it doesn't matter if your movie garbage because of your name you will get the nomination.

    Fuck You Academy Awards

  10. 10

hold up, so your saying that next year when the academy sends out the ballots the voters should just ignore the truly deserving candidates, in order to put more coloured people into the mix, even though their work may not be of high quality.

now thats just plain stupid perez, i doubt any of the coloured people would want to be nominated just to fill in the quota of coloured people, they should be recognised for their work and work only.

  11. 11

Despite there being some roles that were very well portrayed and might of deserved a nomination..maybe the people who got actually got nominated were just that much better than them. It's ridiculous that people want to be treated aqually, then bitch and complain when they aren't nominated for things..I thought you didn't want special treatment because of the color of your skin? hmm. I might just start asking why isn't there a White Entertainment Television, or why can't we have scholarships for white people. Until you get rid of things like that, you will always be treated differently. I'm not racist, but I think it's ridiculous when people get all pissy when things like this happen. Stop pulling the race card, please.

  12. 12

People should be nominated for Academy Awards on the strength of their work, not on the color of their skin. What a stupid, pointless post.

  13. 13

So… What? Are we supposed to nominate people because of their skin color to make them feel better? That would be a slap in the face of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. They want equal human rights, not patronizing white people throwing them a bone.

    You are an ass.

  14. Blunt says – reply to this

Gasp hollywood racist? No get out perez, i mean hollywood is basedoff of image rather than talent . I mean they'd give heidi montag an oscar over say keke palmer, simply because heidi is blonde with blue eyes. smh oh well

  15. 15

Maybe it's because they all sucked. They shouldn't have to include "colored" people just for the sake of it.

  16. 16

What a shame…that in the year 2011 you are still trying to call people out as rasist for no true reason.

There should not HAVE to be a person of color in every single category in order to make the oscar people seem non-racist. Just like not every show or movie should have to have a person of different color from the main cast (really this goes both ways…think back to some of the primarily black shows and you always have the one goofy sidekick…or the one token gay person…or even on primarily white shows…the one goofy colored person.)

Why can't you just be happy for those that were nominated and watch the movies they were nominated for and decide for yourself if they deserve their nominations before you decide that there HAS to be SOMEONE…ANYONE of color who did an ok enough job to deserve the nomination.

  17. 17

Somehow I think this has less to do with the fact that they are people of color and more to do with the fact that they just didn't deserve the nominations.

  18. 18

Do we know if they were excluded on purpose? Or did it just happen that the nominees were nominated because of their talent, not skin colour?

Don't force racism or segregation where it isn't, Perez. That's contributing to the divide.

  19. 19

    quotas…its the american way.

  20. 20

Perez, seriously, you have to STOP making giant issues of every little thing that you read on the internet. Someone of colour or different ethinic race wasn't nominated? IT MUST BE RACISM! Why do you always jump to issues of inequality when stuff happens? Just because someone was not nominated it was not because of their skin colour. It is all based on their ACTING, WRITING, and DIRECTING skills. Get over it and stop causing a ruckus.

  21. 21

I bet if it were the other way around nothing would be said. Have you ever considered that maybe there was no outstanding performance by an actor or actress of "color." It's about talent and performance, your skin color doesn't automatically entitle you to a nomination. Get over yourself.

  22. 22

who cares? this is the reason theres such resentment between races in the world…somebody shouldn't be nominated just to fill a quota. If there were no white people, or hispanics, or asians nominated nobody would say a word.

  23. 23

This has absolutely nothing to do with the colour of their skin. How about no black writers/directors/actors were on par with the rest this year?

  24. 24

uhmm probably color people didn't good very good jobs, they are not going to nominate color people just to not look racist

  25. 25

Perhaps those people of color didn't come up with anything worth nominating . . . being colored doesn't make one automatically talented, u know . . .

  26. 26

this is stupid….everything has to be made into a race issue, doesn't it? you don't nominate people based on race. simple. maybe people of certain physical attributes just happened to have a better year than others. if no gay people are nominated that must be discriminatory as well? absurd.

  27. 27

you cant look at it like racism, thats obviously not the intent. it just so happened that people of color didn't make any movies that were oscar worthy, there not gonna nominate a person of color or a certain woman just because they want it to be diverse.

  28. 28

last time i looked white was a color!

  29. 29

Maybe cause it happened that any people of color did anything worthy? Why going with the race card right away..as always

  30. 30

If you want everyone to be equal then we wouldn't worry if everyone was included in getting an Oscar nomination because the people who deserve it would be nominated. So someone who is of color deserves a nomination over someone who is white just because of the color of their skin? Isn't that in itself racism? It's giving someone an advantage over someone else because of the color of their skin.

  31. 31

This is such a dumb statement to make, so we give a black person a token nomination? That is even more insulting. If they didn't deserve it than that's life.

  32. 32

Oh gee, could it be that it's just the way that the cards fell this year for those nominated and not an intentional snub to people of color?? Nice way to keep the racism pot stirred up.

  33. 33

Just becuase thier a "person of color" doesnt make then automatically eligible for a nomination dumbass. The movie "For Colored Girls" was full of black actors and directors and musicans scoring it, and it fucking SUCKED. It has nothing to do with them being colored that disqualifies them, it has to do with them sucking hard. Janet Jackson was horrible, black, white, or hispanic she spans the range of stupid.

  34. 34

I disagree. There's no affirmative action for awards shows. If there were a "person of color" deserving of an Oscar, they would have been nominated, as in years past.

Quincy Jones. Sidney Poitier, James Earl Jones, Paul Winfield, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Jamie Fox, Don Cheadle, Terence Howard, Forest Whitaker, Dorothy Dandridge, Diana Ross, Cicely Tyson, Diahann Carrol, Whoopi Goldberg, Angela Bssett, Halle Berry, Gabourey Sidibe.

Those are just the black actors nominated for best actor.

  35. 35

Why does everything have to have a racism spin on it…….Geez. It's like crying wolf anymore.

  36. 36

Isnt being of Hispanic/Latin descent a person of color? Javier Bardem is nominated

  37. 37

Just because you are of colour does not mean you deserve a nomination. You should be nominated because you were the best in your category.

  38. 38

White people trying to rule the world one award show at a time lol!!!!

  39. 39

What the fuck does that have to do with anything, you dumbass. If the eyes of the world are supposed to be colorblind, why are you bringing color into it. Stupidest post EVER!

  40. 40

Did it ever effing occur to you that maybe no one of color had shit good enough to qualify this year???? Just because you're of another race doesn't automatically give you a reason to get nominated. You have to earn it just like you should with everything else in this country!!! Obama has you brainwashed into thinking people should be given things without having to work for it. You're PATHETIC.

  41. 41

Why should they go out of their way to nominate a black person? The idea is to nominate the best acting, writing, directing, performances of the year. Nominating a token black person is so insulting to me! I'd rather they not pick a token black and instead nominate those that are worthy. Maybe I'm in the minority of black people that think this way… but I'm much more insulted by shitty acting, writing, a directing… the people nominate were some of the best of the year, they deserve to be nominated… now if you want to have a discussion of how few lead black roles are available, then that's a whole other story.

  42. dtm83 says – reply to this

    GROW UP.

  43. 43

Really Perez?… That's your statement?… So the movie nominations, according to you, should include at least one color person? So it's not about how good or bad they are, and I'm not sure how the selection process is, but supposing it is with votes, when the votation is over they should just cancel one person, and include another because "oh we don't have our fee of color people this year, damn!"… maybe they should include an asian person, and an hindu, and a chicano one… you know so other "minorities" don't get hurt!…. ooooo and don't forget any gay or transexual person, because they might get hurt too… so Oscar Organizers, listen to this: "is not about talent, is about minorities"…

  44. 44

One thing to say - GOOD!

  45. 45

So even if they don't deserve it they should be on the list? This is 2011 and we have a president of color. I don't think race was an issue here.

  46. 46

Maybe, just maybe, no black actor gave a stellar performance, maybe no black filmmaker did any good film, etc.
    Ever thought of that.
    Things like that happen.

  47. dtm83 says – reply to this

  48. 48

I don't think they did it intentionally, like: "Oh let's bring down actors and directors of color and not recognize their work!" It happened to be a good year for white actors and directors , and their work is Oscar- worthy. Let's not forget that last year a number of people of color did amazing roles and got Oscars for them. It depends on the quality of work, and not on the skin color. Racism is stupid and inacceptable, and I like to believe that all those people who are in charge of the Oscars are not racists. Peace and love from Romania.

  49. 49

Oh don't any of you idiots even dare pull a race card. Blacks have the BET awards, Hispanics have the ALMA awards, The LATIN grammys..Theres 32084 awards shows DIRECTLY connected to blacks/Hispanics ONLY. But White people never pull the race card. No blacks were nominated nothing they did in film were worthy of a nomination. So what on earth should they do nominate a black guy just because hes black? Shut the fuck up. Blacks like gays are a minority..Whenever white people see crap like this it instantly makes us go "gays and blacks are retarded"

  50. 50

    This is SO stupid.

  51. 51

    I find this article bizarre!
What has colour got to do with it? If a person deserves to be up for nomination, it's their skill that is on show, not the colour of their skin.
You talk about acceptance and equality all the the time but clearly you do not believe it yourself!

  52. 52

    javier bardem is nominated…
and what?! people of color should get noms JUST for being of color -__-

  53. 53

What movies even came out that had African American actors this year. Beside the tyler perry movie and the Halle Berry film? Maybe if those people went to see these movies people would be more aware of them. Another bunch of blacks using the racist card ridiculous . You complain more than the gays.

  54. 54

RIDICULOUS!!!! If no one was nominated of color, dumbshit, it is because NO ONE OF COLOR good enough. It is not like a token situation, where a certain percentage of color has to be represented while others more qualified get passed over to fulfill the "quotas". GEEEEEEZ, this is NOT ABOUT SKIN COLOR.

  55. 55

Um, what? "This never should have happened"? Giving people accolades just because of the color of their skin to "even things out" amongst different races IS racist. Those nominated are those who deserve to be nominated. Skin color is in no way related to talent. The mere suggestion itself is racist. As many others have stated before me, you're trying to call people out on racism that doesn't exist; YOU are the only person creating a racially charged issue where one doesn't exist. If the tables were turned and not a single white person was nominated, that wouldn't be racist against white people, either. Stop making something out of nothing and creating conflict needlessly!

  56. 56

is this a joke? You make EVERYTHING about race and sexuality! Guess what! No why no black people got nominated? Because there werent any outstanding black perfomormances!

The only thing that would make you happy is to have more black then white people winning. your a disgrace

  57. 57

    this is pathetic

  58. 58

    Um….Javier Bardem? He was nominated.

  59. 59

the headline for your post should read "SAD NO ONE OF COLOR GOOD ENOUGH TO GET NOMINATED"

  60. 60

oh my god are u kidding me right now???? is the academy awards about talent and not about affirmative action!! if someone of colour PERFORMED to an academy award level they would have been a candidate…so relax perez.

  61. 61

This is such an ignorant post..Maybe there was no one of color that deserved it this year!…They shouldn't just nominate someone because they are of color wow… that is insane. I'm just so disgusted by this post.

  62. 62

If you're gonna write an article and attempt to make a point…you should at least A) do your homework and check all your facts B) don't prove yourself wring at the very beginning of your article! The author himself points out that Javier Bardem is nominated and hrs from Spain…but he also states that Bardem doesn't count because he's not black or latino. WHAT THE…??? And I'm sure there had to be some minorities nominated for less glamorous/popular categories! You mean to tell me that no black, latin or Asian folks were nominated for anything this year? I highly doubt that, LOL! The author of this racist and horrendous article is a moron and clearly wrote this article based solely off emotion rather than fact.

  63. 63

i dont think he means that ppl of color got ignored, i think its more like people of color don't get offered lead acting roles, so they dont get a chance to prove that they can do as much good of a job as just white ppl. and its really sad especially since its 2011.

  64. 64

Hey, Halle Berry already got her oscar for a role she didn't deserve it for. Are we to give away an award for each skin color to keep people happy?

  65. 65

I do not understand what race has to do with anything? If anything white people are the most discriminated people in the USA right now PERIOD. I am a latina and saying this; my fiance is white and didnt get hired at several companies because he was white and they needed to fill more slots of 'people of color". Had I walked in being a latina woman and had no idea what I was talking about I would have gotten the position over him because of the color of my skin. Pulling a race card is not the way to go. Everyone know Mickey Rourke deserved to win for the Wrestler and didnt because of the character that Sean Penn played and not the job he did. Leave race out of things

  66. 66

People are still pulling out the fucking racist card for an excuse to stir up shit. So many people of colour have won and been nominated for oscars. Shut the fuck up Perez. Seriously.

  67. 67

Come on, are you serious? So they should disreguard all talent and choose people based on their skin color????? THat is the most racist thing I have ever heard….

I'm sure they chose based on who deserved it.

  68. 68

P.S We don't kick off about the MOBOs over here in England. If we had a Music of White Origin award show, all hell would break lose, it's fucking ridiculous.

  69. 69

I'm glad that most of the comments here say the same thing I felt when I first read this post…

COLOR should NOT be a basis for an award or nomination!!!!

  70. 70

Looks like no one is in agreement with you today, fatass!

  71. 71

While everyone here is saying that Perez is just throwing the race card, I agree with the fact that they should be awarded solely on the acting performance we also have to keep in mind that people of color are not often given roles. the roles often ask for those of a certain skin color- look at the submission requirements. the thruth is that many people of color are often not given the chance to submit for a certain role, unless it's a stereotypical that portrays them as the funny loud mouth one, and that is the truth. when they are given the chance to play a role , they go beyond whats expected and that causes fear in Hollywood.

  72. 72

I think most people are like me and I don't give a shit if you are black or white, gay or straight. Do you think people in the Academy care? You are out of your mind this time perez.

  73. 73

Idiots, people of color are not just African American they are also Indian, Asian, Hispanic and so on…… But it is hard to believe that no one of “color” was nominated… Ummmm….

  74. 74

This is not a color issue, stop making up fake stories.
I no person of color was nominated is because their work was not woth a nomination.
    Simple as that.

  75. 75

Re: pie107 – um you're the moron, you're the racist, and you're whats wrong with this country…thats all

  76. 76

EVERYONE! The fact that no one of color was or had the slightest chance to be nominated for an Oscar this year is a simple reflection of the lack of prominent roles for colored/ethnic minority actors in the Hollywood industry. It is obviously correct that prestigious awards should be granted to those with talent, ability and not based on relative factors as one's skin color. The CHANCE to be nominated, let alone win an Oscar, is what's the matter. And that opportunity has not been consistently nor fairly given to actors of every race.

  77. 77

That is really ridiculous Perez. This isn't affirmative actions: Hollywood Edition. Seriously, this is completely unnecessary, all that post does is perpetuate racism. The more we notice differences in race, the more racist we are, by pure definition. If there were some latino or black actors/actresses who did better then fine, this is a bad thing. But honestly, I can't think of any.

  78. 78

NOooooooOOOOOoooooooOOOOOOoooooo! Seriously Perez…go read a book please or something. Geez you're an idiot. Or maybe you're trying to incite some stupid race drama.

  79. 79

Awards should be about talent and hard workmanship. If an individual performs well, then they should be recognized. This is not about color and if it is, which I see you've thrown in, then that's kind of sad that we have to make it the affirmative actions awards.

  80. 80

this is such a pointless post. i used to be a fan until you started pulling this sort of crap. get over yourself not everyone is out to discriminate

  81. 81

just because there were no coloured nominees does not imply racism. it implies that this year the most outstanding performances were given by people who were not coloured. if there was someone that merited it i'm sure they would have been given it. black swan, the kings speech, true grit, the social network and inception had casts that had a majority of white actors. they were the best films and therefore it follows that white actors got the nominations. it is not racism…

  82. 82

Wow, lets invent imaginary racism. That's just what the world needs.

  83. 83

Make the darkies earn it like everybody else!

  84. 84

The PC police strike again. Got to agree with most of the comments already made, nominations should be based on talent not skin colour. If you were a person of colour and were nominated for an award after this had been pointed out wouldnt you feel slightly like you'd only been nominated to fill a quota? 'Shut out' is a bit strong perez, or have I missed the publicity for the oscars where they say 'no coloured people allowed'?

  85. 85

This is really stupid for you to report this. There was no one of color to nominate!!! Why is it that people need to either assume things are racist?? This is the look of society getting stupider and stupider. Are people really expected to go "Awww that really is horrible"???? Whoever gave you this article (Miami Herald) are complete morons, and it was even stupider for you to post it.

  86. 86

I guess you guys are blind to the fact that a majority of Hollywood is constituted of, or bluntly dominated by, Caucasian actors, directors, screenplay writers, etc. Ethnic minorities also deserve a chance at being nominated for an Oscar to which they clearly have not this year.

  87. 87

There are "people of color" nominated for awards Perez just thinks that if it is anything other than best actor/actress or supporting actor/actress then they are shut out. Shit if those were the only awards the show would be 10 min long

  88. 88

Once I agree with Perez..as a black male..I have seen countless filsm, and movies this year..not one nomination..Amazing but Im by far surprised. Im not going to waste to much energy on the folks that are making negative remarks..Black actors are just as well as any other race.

  89. 89

So you're implying that one of the most liberal communities in the US (Hollywood) is being racist by not nominating people of color? Are you f-ing kidding me? I think people of color would be offended that the implication was even made. Let's talk about the quality of the films, acting, directing…this isn't a class war, its nominations for a stupid award show. Isn't this what we all want? Being judged on TALENT and nothing else? Plus, I thought all of this racism talk would end after people of color started winning awards, which they have. You're such a pot-stirrer Perez.

  90. 90

    please change this headline to

  91. 91

STFU Perez. I nominate Obama for acting like a jackass and doing nothing.

  92. 92

Perez.. can you list a few people or movies that should have been up for an Oscar that you feel was snubbed? dummy..

  93. 93

eisenburg is a Jew. jew is a color, isnt it?

  94. 94

Oh big deal. People should be nominated because of their talent not their race. You are always whining about equal rights but what you really want is everyone to give gays and latinos special rights. You don't give a shit about equal.

  95. 95

So Javier Bardem doesn't qualify as a "person of color"? Stop trying to stir shit up where none is necessary. Oh and by the way learn how to spell check on your posts!

  96. 96

Oh but last year "Precious" won several awards and deserved each of them, if a person of "color" wasn't nominated they probably didn't have any actor or actress who lived up to the standards of an oscar. It's not a big fucking deal.

  97. 97

PEREZ, YOU HAVE TO STOP THIS… Don't you realize that you are really starting to PISS people off with how ignorant you are about politics and racial issues… Usually the person calling someone or something racist when it doesn't exist IS THE RACIST…. You have almost ALL these posts against you.. doesn't that say something? Oh and I love that you correct your posts when you are flat out wrong and lie: i.e. Todd Palin.. It came out today from the investigation that NO, Todd had NOTHING to do with the hookers, but YOU WILL NEVER ADMIT WHEN YOU'RE WRONG….

  98. 98

  99. 99

Re: lexyleigh – I love hearing from "the other sides" point of view. It refreshes me and shows everyone else that white people are not racist. PEOPLE ARE RACIST.

  100. 100

The reason Perez brings racism into the discussion is because it is Perez's agenda to promote racism and homophobia which in turn perpetuates hate. I guess he believes that hate and controversy sells. Heaven forbid, if there was no hate in the world…..then people like Perez would have nothing to say and they would be without a vocation.
