Ugandan Gay Rights Activist Bludgeoned To Death

This is terrible.

A Ugandan gay rights activist was bludgeoned to death in his home.

David Kato's name was listed as one of the nation's "top 100 homosexuals" in an a tabloid story that included a list of names along with photos, addresses, and a banner that read, "Hang Them."

A neighbor found Kato's body and notified authorities. Arrest warrants have been issued for two suspects: a taxi driver found near Kato's house and an ex-convict who was staying with Kato before the killing.

After the list was released last year, Kato had told sources that he feared for his life. "The villagers want to set my house ablaze," he said. "They want to burn my house. … (They say,) 'Can you go away before my house is burned?'"

Activists urged authorities in Uganda to investigate the killing and have called on the government to protect them from violence.

"David Kato's death is a tragic loss to the human rights community. David had faced the increased threats to Ugandan LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people bravely and will be sorely missed," said Maria Burnett, senior Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch.

The U.S. Mission in Kampala, Uganda, issued a statement saying it "mourns" Kato's death.

"The U.S. extends its sympathies to David's family, friends and human rights colleagues. David's courageous devotion to promoting the universal human rights of members of Uganda's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community improved the lives of minority populations in Uganda and throughout Africa, and his selfless dedication to defending human rights and speaking out against injustice served as inspiration to human rights defenders around the world."

This was such unnecessary violence and so unfortunate that a life was lost so tragically.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to David's family.

That poor man and his family. My heart aches for them. Hunt the criminal(s) that did this down and string them up in the town square for all to see what happens to these animals. What a shame.

YOU KNOW PEREZ, YOU TALK THE TALK BUT YOU JUST WON'T WALK THE WALK. IF YOU ARE SUCH AN OUTSPOKEN "ACTIVIST" WHY DON'T YOU GET UP OFF YOUR FLABBY ASS AND GO TO UGANDA TO LEAD PROTESTS?

    I DIDN'T THINK SO.

Homosexuality isnt liked by the black community, they view it as a sin x 10. From africa, to America and the caribbean black folks dont accept gays. Which is why the "DL" thing is away to not get caught or outed. So perez be glad your a white homo and stop bitching bout gay right in America

LOL Letty, you are hilarious. I'm right there with you.

He's too busy kissing Lady Gaga's ass.

Anyway, this is such an unfortunate event. It angers me to know such inhumane individuals exist.

Well, its honorably that he died for what he believed in and he died trying to make a positive change in the world. I tip my hat to you. I just hope it was worth going to hell for cuz that's where he is right now.

TEARS FALL OUT MY EYES AS I TYPE THIS WITH A VERY HEAVY HEART.

I AM A STRAIGHT WOMAN WHOM BELIEVE IN TOTAL EQUALITY AND BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS.
SUCH SHAME THAT THIS MAN WAS KILLED BECAUSE HE CHOOSE TO LIVE HIS LIFE IN HIS TRUTH. HE WAS NOT HURTING ANYONE, JUST TRYING TO LIVE THE BEST HAPPY LIFE HE COULD LIVE UNDER TERRIBLE CONDITIONS. I SO WISH THAT DAVID KATO COULD HAVE COME TO THE USA AND LIVE OUT HIS LIFE IN A MORE PEACEFUL WAY….I WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP SACRIFICING OTHER PEOPLES LIVE TO PROVE WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN.

Re: Blunt – Right, because you know SOOO much about the black community, dont you? I'm black and gay and have NO problem. In fact, I've never had a problem. Homophobia is a problem in every race, in every Country. Try being gay in Russia, or Iran. Its no cake walk. So Perez should be glad, as I am, that he's an AMERICAN homo, because his whiteness wouldn't help him much as a homo elsewhere.

P.S The "DL" is just a slang word for "closeted." Ted Haggard, the white Evangelical, was "DL" before he was outed.

What do you expect from a bunch of svavge african monkeys

they still kill albino people because they think their bones have magical powers.

    PHUCK AFRICA
LET IT DIE LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO

  9. 9

He was a brave man. No good deed goes unpunished, is what they say.

From the backwards shithole nation that gave birth to Idi Amin it should not be shocking that he was beaten to death. During Amins time they liked using machetes to control their enemies. This isn't news as much as it's a way of like there.

Re: gorgeous_chik7 – If this is really how you feel, then why do you even bother reading this site or these types of blogs? You are disgusting and there is no room for your vile comments here when Perez is only trying to bring awareness to very serious issues.

Re: gorgeous_chik7 – You're a disgusting person. I highly recommend suicide for you.

The laws in Uganda prohibit homosexuality and it is punishable by death. It is sickening, but it is the truth. David was a very brave man and is a true martyr for his actions to promote equality and respect in his home country. The 'criminals' that killed him were laws and ignorance. Unfortunately, at this point in time in Uganda and many other African nations, homosexuality is seen as one of the most vilest of sins.
I look forward to the day when someone's sexual orientation is no longer an issue, but rather just a fact.

Re: whtadiduexpect – you're another ignorant asshole who posts stupid shit. "Phuck Africa. Let it die like it was supposed to?" You're mentality is as bad as a terrorist who has no consideration or regard towards other cultures and wishes them dead. I can't believe people like YOU exist.

  16. 16

May you rot in hell all of those responsible in anyway for this disgusting act of violence.
There are more people responsible than the two who killed David Kato.

Re: Blunt – Negroes in the DL is at epidemic levels that show how two face Blacks are! I read the Bell Curve and it proves why Blacks are the lowest in I.Q. scales and every time i read news like this one it shows that book is right.- An what can you expect of Africa the worse diseases came from there (AIDS, Leprosy, Ebola, Cholera and others) I've been in some African countries and the misery is all around them!!

  18. 18

this is so horrible but again perez only gives a damn about gay deaths, he writes this news like its never happened before. thousands of people get killed in Africa every day for nothing! People get their limbs cut off just for voting for the opposition and one gay guy gets killed (really really terrible for sure) but Perez writes it like its a brand new thing to happen. But this is super sad, I wish our countries would intervene there and help out some Africans but that'll never happen

  19. 19

LOL Just the reaction I was hoping for. He really is in hell though. Sad.

  20. 20

that is awful.. despite what you believe and your stance on homosexuality and religion etc. no one deserves to have their life taken from them in such a cruel manner. Prayers go out to his family.

  21. 21

After reading something so terrible, i only wish to punch Jenna Jameson, they worry for some many stupid things, and create problems of so much nonsense. These are real problems. I wish everyone try to focus the energy on solving these kind of problems. Some "celebrities" need to grow up now.

  22. 22

Perez as the hardcore activist that you are you should go there and do something about it.

  23. 23

Ugandans, like many African nations, blame homosexuality for the spread of AIDS which infects a large portion of their population. They no longer accept help from the Episcopal church because the church allows gay priests and bishops. It is wrong, but they are not doing it out of some moral hatred of gays. They are uneducated and see gays/AIDS as a real threat to their existence. They do it out of fear. Instead of pointing fingers and condeming them as homophobes we should set up schools and educate them on safe straight/gay sex.

  24. 24

God you are so phony Mario.

  25. 25

Here's a thought for Joel Osteen: it is a VERY slippery slope when religious and political leaders condemn individuals they consider "sinners." Sad.

My question is, do people ever learn. Seventy years ago there also was a maniac, that wanted to kill all gays, jews, gipsies and disabled. His way of killing those people was beyond loathesome. Do we ever learn? We all like to tell that, all people are equal, but the actions performed, show different. Why can't we be happy for other people, when they are happy with someone with the same sex. Why can't we accept each other for what they are, we have to live together on this planet?

  27. 27

Re: gorgeous_chik7 – you really are a horrible person

  28. 28

So, not a martyr to a cause, but to either spousal abuse or to picking up a homicidal casual partner.
