Dear Iowa…THIS Sucks!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooGay Gay GayLegal MattersPolitik

So disappointing!

Following a three hour debate, the Iowa house has voted today to approve a resolution that proposes a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage!

House Joint Resolution 6 was approved by a very disheartening vote of 62-37, however, it was expected following last week's house judiciary committee, which passed the resolution with an 13-8 vote.

One Iowa Executive Director Carolyn Jenison says:

“The proposed amendment devalues families and divides Iowans. The Constitution is meant to protect the freedoms and liberties of all Iowans. It is inappropriate to use the political process to single out and deny a group of Iowans of their constitutional protections.”

And senate majority leader Michael Gronstal maintains:

“The vote today by House Republicans was a big step backwards for the constitutional rights of all Iowans. I remain committed to protecting the rights of all Iowans and focusing our energy on helping Iowans recover from the national recession.”

Well said!

They should be absolutely ashamed of themselves for such a blatant infringement on people's rights!

This may have been a step back, but that doesn't mean that we still can't LEAP forward again if we need to!

EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL.

"This may have been a step back, but that doesn't mean that we still can't LEAP forward again if we need to!" - If you can LEAP forward anytime you want why are you crying about being discriminated against every other post?? Just get out there and leap already dammit!!

Its Iowa, I was raised there. What do you expect? They screw farm animals in Iowa!

This is very sad to hear! Right taken away from American Citizens who should all be equal! Hopefully this change doesnt happen!

hey rickraton- you were raised in Iowa? Exactly where are we screwing farm animals? Just because a small group says no to gay marriage doesn't mean the rest of us feel that way. Quit making Iowa look as though we are a bunch of hillbilly corm growers. There is a lot more to Iowans than most think. For the record I support gay marriage.

eww IOWA is a disgrace to the country!

Marriage is a union between a man and a woman. (and I'm in no way religious). Get over it.

As an Iowan, I would like to day that when gay marriage was made legal in April 2009, not one citizen knew about the government's actions on this issue. It was one massive surprise, therefore I believe it is absolutely CORRECT to end gay marriage until it can be put up to a vote BY THE PEOPLE instead of the government making the decision for us. With less than 50% for gay marriage, the citizens have the right to choose what they believe is right for their state.

Re: punkrok9002 – Really? Majority rules on citizen's constitutional rights? Try again, sweetie. That's not America. All these petty despots and their pseudo-christian tyranny are just little kids playing in a sandbox with their toys. Eventually grownups with mature attitudes will win and all this will be behind us. Dark days now, but IT GETS BETTER!

Re: punkrok9002 – As an Iowan, I knew about the actions of our government the day they made gay marriage legal, so there you are wrong. It is ignorant for you to think that we should be allowed to vote on other people's rights. Love is love, and it always will be. Not one marriage of same sex couples has effected the state in a negative way. If half of the Iowan's got to choose what was right for the state everything would go downhill, hence the reason why we choose the people in our government. This is a civil rights issue and personally, I really don't want to go back to the days where we discriminated against people and thought that taking rights away from them was ok. I am proud to say I am from Iowa because we allow same sex marriage. If this changes, it just proves how stuck in the past most Iowans are, aka you punkrok.

Perez - if you want to hear inspiring words from an Iowan, please look up "Zach Wahls Speaks About Family" on YouTube. As an Iowan that fully supports gay rights, it really touched me. I usually wish that people would stop seeing Iowa as a home of hillbillies, but when things like this happen all I can say is PLEASE remember that not all Iowans are like this.

    Good for Iowa.

I think this is just a step back in the war againist morons. We haven't lost the battle yet. Chins up everybody, the war will be won. I am a Christian and I believe that God loves all his children.
