NINTH Sponsor Pulls Advertising From Skins!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooTV NewsMTV

And the saga continues!

Last night's episode of Skins will mark the last time an ad for Proactiv airs during its 10pm time slot on MTV, as the company has announced today that they will be the ninth major sponsor to pull out of the show!

Kendra Elliot, Vice President of Media for its manufacturer, Guthy-Renker, reveals:

"We have officially requested that MTV revise our traffic schedule so that Proactiv spots cease airing during Skins. As a direct marketer, our media buying strategy is programming agnostic. We work with the networks and buy across the broadcast day, vs. selecting specific shows. So, while our spots may air inside a particular program, it is not representative of our specific desire to support the programming and content of that particular show. MTV’s programming changes constantly and many of the shows are repeats."

By next week, this mess isn't going to have anything to air during commercial breaks! And they're already littered mostly with previews for Teen Mom 2!

Not a good sign!

Oh well!

I'm a fan of the original show; this show can be racey but it's no different than showcasing pregnant mothers, true life drug addicts, gossip girls … are parents scared to face that some of these situations happen to teens in real life?

Interesting that the strategy of controversy isn't working for MTV this time. Maybe it's time to put on some quality programming instead of mind numbing crap.

  3. 3

obviously Proactiv has no clue who's buying their product

  4. 4

This show glorifies the things that are ruining our youth. Teen drinking, drug use and casual sex are things we want to prevent our children from doing. When a television program on a network teenagers watch shows other teens having fun doing these things it makes it harder to teach them right from wrong.

four words proactive pimples pus pizzaface

why exactly are they acting liek some kind of pimple royalty is beyond me

Re: nc10Re: nc10 – You are a teen no doubt and someday you'll have a different opinion on issues like this. I do not watch Gossip Girl so I cannot comment on it however I have seen programs about drug addiction on MTV and it does not glorify this lifestyle, it shows the perils of drug use. Skins glorifies very dangerous actions which is concerning. Parents were once teens and we realize that these things occur but to show them so lightheartedly and in a fun manner sends wrong messages. My job is to protect my son and standing against this show is one of many things I can do to show him this behavior is not ok.

*I Can NOT Believe This!.. Skins is a great up and coming show and its sad that Proactiv pulled out their commercials on the third episode when if the watched they would have seen how great the show IS!* ALOT of teens do alot of the things that are shown in SKINS and MTV is just showing the truth! Its sad how parents can't take the truth from a REAL show like Skins but they accept the fake garbage that was shown on The Hills or the the raunchiness and fake ness of JERSEY SHORE** SAD SAD SAD! I LOVE SKINS!!!!

I actually tuned in this week to see what all of the fuss was about, and I was not impressed. In my opinion the show is terrible, and it was not edgy…it was trying way too hard to be hardcore.
    Well said Gimlet123!

Re: CoutureVirgo – It does try way too hard to be edgy and hardcore. I think both the original and the new Skins fail in that sense.

good. take the show off the air. It's so boring. I can't even sit 2 minutes through It. and i can sit through most infomercials. how sad.

Re: nursesRgr8 – I'm a parent and I love this show. I loved the UK one more, but I believe it's a sobering show that accurately details the lives of teenagers. It is an honest depiction of the conflicts that teens are faced with on a daily basis, and while they may be young, this show also demonstrates the not so pretty consequences of the decisions that they make.

Your job is to protect YOUR son, not to impose your moral standards on everyone else who has a mind of their own. If my son wanted to watch this

If you don't like the show, don't watch it, and don't let your child watch it, but don't f*&) it up for the rest of us. This show is as honest as it gets in America, and your disgust of it just goes to show how prudish Americans really are. This is Barney compared to the UK one, and that's gotten BAFTA after BAFTA. Get a grip, sometimes the truth hurts.

  12. 12

never saw it but when all three of your teen kids think it's ridiculous and too OTT ( and they are Jersey Shore fans) you know something is up.

  13. 13

I hate this version of the show mainly because it's ruining the essence of the real Skins. There's a reason it was aired in England first, because the Brits know it's a TV SHOW! If it's not Skins then it's Sex and the City, and if it's not Sex and the City then it's Weeds, etc. No matter what channel you watch there will always be a "Skins" type show. So it's not about what our kids see on tv, it's what we teach our kids. You can't shield you children from life but you can teach them what's right or wrong.

I have been watching the UK Skins (which is far more graphic then this American mess) since 2007. I have never done drugs, I am not an Alcoholic and I don't even smoke. You know why? Because of my parents. They were involved in every aspect of my life, they were always there. They would stand by me and when an issue would present itself, they wouldn't hide me from it, but they would help me through it, and they raised me with COMMON SENSE.

If your kids are stupid enough to get their values from a TV show then well, they're a lost cause right from the off.

  14. 14

Oh please dear goodness. SKINS USA is like an episode of Dawsons Creek. SKINS UK is so much more grittier and down right crazzzyyyyyyy! Thats why we love it!

  15. 15

i think its really weird that people are saying that it glorifie sex and drug use. The sex and drug use are a bi product of these teens being troubled. As in the original series each character looks glamorous through the eyes of another character. but when each story is told from the perspection of that character, you realize that these characters aren't glamourous, but instead are pretty fucked up and they they are acting out. Thats why every episode it titled the name of a character because you actually get to see whats behind what they show everyone else. Stan acts out to get attention of the girl he likes but feels he can never have. Chris acts out because his father hates him and his mother always abandons him, Tea acts out because he voice is lost in her family. This kids aren't glamour. They're completely effed up.

  16. 16

Never seen the show but as a parent why would I ever want to have anything to do with an accurate depiction of teens doing what twentysomethings do. Sounds like kiddie porn. You put that on MTV and it becomes cool to kids and normal…

  17. 17

This show is T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E!!! I could only watch about 5 minutes of it before I became completely disgusted, and changed the channel. It makes our generation look like a bunch of sleezy drug addicts. I'm all for partying, but no one wants to see a bunch of 14 year olds ruin their lives.

  18. 18

Proactive is HORRIBLE. It DOES NOT WORK!! When will people start putting 2 and 2 together….
If you need a celebrity (or semi-celebrity) to endorse a product….. IT DOES NOT WORK (which is why they rely heavily on celebrity endorsements!

This is such an over-reaction!! I don't understand why they are all being such a wet blanket about it… they don't havto watch it if they don't want and pulling out their commercials and stuff is just ridiculous!

  20. 20

It's funny how so many people are so shocked and upset about this show.
This is America for crying out loud.
We're the land of anything goes and ridiculousness.
We have dozens of TV shows about things that don't matter and people love them.

Being a teenager myself, all I can say is if your kid wants to smoke weed, drink alcohol, be reckless, have casual sex and take pills…..they're going to whether you like it or not. You have to appreciate a show that tells it like it is.

  21. 21

    cancel it
