NBC Employee Fired For Uploading 1994 Katie Couric Internet Vid!

| Filed under: TV NewsKatie CouricTech TalkPerezTV

Dear NBC,

This is bullshizz!

So, it appears that the video above (Katie Couric and crew not knowing what Internet is) has lead to the termination of the guy who uploaded it from NBC! Why??

We suppose they're probably claiming copyright and all of that, but it's more likely that they're more embarrassed by it than anything else!

Here are the tweets:

"The guy who posted the 1994 Today Show "what is Internet?" clip on YouTube e-mailed to say he got canned for that. Ugh."

"Said individual was an NBC employee, as noted in the post. I asked him if that was OK to mention w/out using his name; he said yes."

"Yes, I share your befuddlement at this news."

Befuddlement is right!! Give him his job back! The vid was LOLz and nothing more!!

Do U think this person should have been fired??

  1. 1

did katie couric always look like shit?

  2. 2

Didn't think he needed to be fired for it. The video WAS aired he's only reairing it again, duh.

  3. 3

wow. this is an important part of our generation's history! I can't believe this. don't worry–i saved the video (and backed up) so as many times as it's taken down, I'll keep reuploading it

  4. 4

i dont understand why they would be embarrassed by this. The internet wasn't common place until 1996. I wouldn't have expected them to know what it was in '94!

  5. 5

    it was Katie Couric's doing.

  6. 6

No reason for the guy to lose his job. Although Im sure Katie hates the reminder about how cheap and simple she often comes off.

  7. 7

What a dumb reason to be fire it's just a video they really do suck as a company.

  8. 8

I assume if he did it on company time, they had every right to fire him. Still don't know what the big deal is over not knowing much about the Internet in 1994, though. Most people didn't.

  9. 9

yes he should be fired, he uploaded that solely to embarress people.

  10. 10

Katie Couric hates to look stupid. Even though she is

  11. 11

Both Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel annoy the crap out of me.

  12. 12

rule #1: don't embarrass the boss (unless you're real sneaky and can get away with it).

  13. 13

The internet was not new in 1994, please. If they didn't understand the internet by 1994, then they are just broadcast lemmings, without any real first-hand knowledge.

  14. 14

Re: Southern belle 12 – Sarah…you reading again??

  15. 15

Thanks for posting this, actually. I'm struggling trying to make it on my own and this just reinforces that I should never return to a corporate job.

  16. 16

Sorry but I can't tolerate Katie or Bryant for that matter. She loves to make others look stupid but can't take the heat! Get out of the kitchen Katie!

  17. 17

    DURRRR.

  18. 18

Gumbel the dumbell was made to look stupid, but really, he has only himself to blame. His incoherent ramblings ruined Thursday Night Football for more than 2 years.

  19. 19

I'm sure Katie had this man fired! Katie is the bigest C U Next Tuesday on TV. She is a big fake and full of herself.

  20. 20

it wasn't exactly smart to upload it…i mean he should've known better - just because i mean networks overreacting is not exactly surprising.
but no, of course he shouldn't have been fired.

  21. 21

What's the matter with what he did??? It was funny, light hearted and not intended to offend anyone. It's the internet and it's free reign!

  22. 22

Absolutely no surprise. NBC slants the news and daily leaves out important news stories because of their agenda. Why do we think they wouldn't fire someone for being an independent mind.

  23. 23

Yes he should have been fired, it is not his responsibility to release content. But the video funny. I was using the internet in the 80's and Al Gore was pushing the information super highway before 1994. So I am not sure how these idiots did not know about the internet at this time.

  24. 24

I bet Sarah Palin loves this lol

  25. 25

Bryant Gumbel sure comes off as a giant ahole prima donna

  26. 26

    WHAT a bunch of bullshit!!!

  27. 27

OMG Serious going to get fired over this I did not know how to read a website until I got my first computer in 97. Shakes head so sad people think that we always had internet and cell phones like there is today.

  28. 28

I'm sure what he did was a violation of company policy, but maybe he should have just been written up and suspended or something I don't find it a bit embarrassing. Just ask your grandparents when they first heard about television but didn't own one yet.

  29. 29

He WORKED for NBC. He could be sued thereby dragging NBC in to be sued. If he was someone who had the footage having nothing to do with NBC - different story…

  30. 30

Katie Couric should pay this guy for bringing her some young demo PR. This was so harmless that a slap on the wrist would've been appropriate punishment. A suspension would've been too much (but understandable) but firing the guy is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! Shame on NBC!

  31. 31

lol…people here are retarded. No one got fired over anyone being embarrassed. There's nothing in this clip to be embarrassed about. Like someone else said, the person was probably doing it on company time or he didn't have the right to release it. I don't think this aired. It might have been between commercials. It's definitely an interesting clip though. It's a little piece of history.

  32. 32

Re: Canadianne…eh – She'd love if if she's as dumb as the idiots posting here who think there's anything in this video to be embarrassed by. Oh wait..she is!

  33. 33

Re: michaelz – Why would Katie Couric have anything to do with this? And why would NBC care if Katie Couric cared about this clip? She doesn't work for NBC anymore. I really need to stop reading the comments on this website. The stupidity of people here is scaring me.

  34. 34

I love the comment about the Internet computer network, "the one that's becoming really big now."

I didn't know there was another Internet out there that didn't make it so big. Is it now working as a Walmart greeter somewhere?

This memorabilia. in 1994 most people didn't even know what windows was! Let alone Email and stuff.

    36

That's a cute piece of history. I doubt it was so much the content as it was an employee uploading network property that technically doesn't belong to him to give him the sole right to do so.

  37. 37

Um, it was 1994. This isn't embarrassing.

  38. 38

In the summer of 1993 I had just graduated from High School and started my 1st college class. The professor was giving us research paper deets and he said, "Today we'll do our research from the Information Super Highway." Everyone just stared blankly at him. I remember wondering, 'Where's that?! Are we going there together on a bus?' LOLZ! NOBODY in my class had ever heard of the internet. I went home and asked everyone I knew. Same blank stare.

  39. 39

This guy got canned because NBC has a strict policy of not having their videos on you tube at all. They even hire people to constantly check youtube to make sure there are no NBC vids on there. He was stupid to post it…i worked at an advertising agency..this is why I know this..him actually working at NBC…i'm sure someone at NBC informed them of this policy..but he did it anyway…what an ass lol.

  40. 40

Of course he should. He released it without permission, and probably against contractual obligation. Every company has rules, policies and procedures about what they deem company property. This is definitely company property and I'm pretty sure he isn't in the video, so most definitely he should be fired.
