10 Things Stephen King Hates About You Has To Say About The New Stand

stephen king on the stand

Earlier this week, we learned that a new version of Stephen King's The Stand is in the works.

Now, King has opened up with his thoughts about the upcoming adaptation of his classic novel.

Here are the top ten things he had to say about it to Entertainment Weekly:

1. No one will be able to top Gary Sinise, who played Stu Redman in the original ABC miniseries. He was perfect. When he says “You don’t know nothing” to the soldiers who are putting him under mandatory quarantine, you believe his contempt completely. My runner-up pick would be Jake Gyllenhaal.
2. I didn’t know anything about the remake until I read about it on the Internet.
3. You absolutely can’t make it as a two-hour movie. If it was a trilogy of films…maybe.
4. Molly Ringwald won’t be playing Fran Goldsmith this time.
5. Rutger Hauer is a little too old to play the Walkin’ Dude, and that’s too bad.
6. People who’ve seen Kubrick’s The Shining dislike the miniseries I wrote (and my amigo Mick Garris directed) even if they haven’t seen it. That’s always annoyed me. But the wheel of karma turns! This time people will probably say, “The miniseries was lots better.” BUT…
7. …historically speaking, movie studios blow the budget on things like this, so maybe it’ll be fun to look at. The dough certainly isn’t going to me, although if it is a trilogy, and if it makes a lot of money, I might be able to buy a chicken dinner at Popeye’s. Great slaw!
8. Molly Ringwald will probably not play the Trashcan Man, either, but Billy Bob Thornton would be cool. Billy Bob’s always cool.
9. They need to write in a lot of heavy-metal for the soundtrack.
10. M-O-O-N, that spells “you probably won’t see this anytime soon.” And when you do, Woody Allen won’t be directing it. Or Molly Ringwald.

cant see past any of the "in" jokes to make any sense of that bitter statement. Dont believe your own hype Stephen. Like Perez, God gave you a talent that's best kept out of the spotlight and behinfd the writing.

Most important point - can't be a 2 hour movie. No way.

There were five people who seemed well cast in The Stand: Gary Sinise, Ruby Dee, Ray Walston, Ossie Davis and Rob Lowe. I think those 5 were close to perfect in their characterizations (and I've read the book about 50 times). But ALL the other major players (especially Molly Ringwald and the guy who played Harold) were criminally bad. I completely agree with King that Rutger would have been outstanding as Flagg. Trashy needs to be played by someone who can bring more "danger" to the role of crazy. But I would love to see it remade. I always felt that the overwhelming sense of "foreboding" was never projected well enough on screen. It would take a talented set of people to create the right "feeling" and it would be nice to have a better soundtrack, for sure. "Don't fear the Reaper" was sorely missed by me but I have to say that I cannot hear "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House without thinking of the opening of the second episode. It was haunting.

    bwahahaha, wait…what? :/

The Shining mini-series was much better than Kubrick's version. The mini-series followed the book perfectly, while Kubrick made too many crappy changes. I hope they don't do the same with this book

Read the book many many times, it is my favorite King book. The mini-series was amazing too. But, if they are remaking it with Jake Gyllenhaal, I may be drooling the entire time. My favorite book, and hollywood crush….I don't think I can handle it.

The story's too complicated for a two-hour movie and King's right about Sinise in this and every other movie I've ever seen him in - criminally underused by Hollywood - he's marvelous.

Steve Buscemi'd make a great Trashcan man and Aaron Eckhart should play Flagg.

    love Gary Sinise :)

Chistian Bale for Flagg!! and I agree with whoever said Steve Buscemi would make a great trashcan man.
