Xtina Devastated About Super Bowl Mess Up, Releases Statement

| Filed under: Christina AguileraMusic MinuteOops!ZportzPerezTVEvents

On Sunday, Christina Aguilera sang the Star Spangled Banner live at the Super Bowl (above), and unfortunately messed up the lyrics.

Xtina has gotten quite a bit of attention for her lyrical mishap. Here's what sources had to say about it:

"This was the biggest performance of her career and she blew it. To mess up the lyrics was a disaster."

"A hush fell over the stadium and everyone was looking at each other."

According to a source, Xtina is devastated with her mistake, and she feels that she let America, and herself down.

Here's what she had to say about her major flub:

"I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through."

We all make mistakes, Xtina. Certainly, this was a bigger one, but we appreciate what you're saying here, and we doubt too many people will take it as a sign of disrespect for the country.

She was nervous, understandable. Other than that she did a good job. Honest mistake.

  2. 2

Lol, caught up in trying to overdue a simple song if you ask me. Fail.

  3. 3

She one of a billion female singers, no one cares. I wish she would just go away now.

It's been called one of the hardest songs to sing. I'm not a fan of hers but she did her best! It happens!

  5. 5

No, it's not a sign of disrespect. The song is one of the hardest to sing and thousands of people have messed it up worse than this.

  6. 6

I've already said it once before and I'll say it again. I'm not a fan of this girl but I give her credit for singing it live. Too many other "artists" lip synch stuff nowadays. So she got a little nervous and flubbed a line. I can live with it and so should she.

  7. 7

Messing up the lyrics wasn't the worst part of this song! Why does everyone try to out-do each other by putting their own spin on it? Just sing the fucken song the way it was written! What a mess! This chick over sings everything!

  8. 8

We sang this 1000 times in grammar school. If an 8 year old cando it, so can an entertainment personnality (or maybe not) Is she smarter than a 5th grader? Guess not.

She should have called it the star's mangled banner. Insert rimshot here____

  9. 9

It is her job as a performer and a singer to know or at the very least have the lyrics memorized. It's apparent by her performance that she its taking on to much. I'm Canadian and even I have the lyrics memorized. This just shows how much patriotism she has for her country…..

  10. 10

Well Perez, you've certainly changed your tune from last night when 'OMG OMG She COMPLETELY flubbed the ENTIRE anthem!!1!!111!!!'

You're a cretin. You haven't changed your malicious ways. You are still a bully, only now you are a two-faced one that revels in kicking people while they're down and then tries to play it off the next day as if you had been on their side all along. It was quite obvious that you took pleasure in her mistake and the subsequent bashing you laid upon her for it.

  11. 11

I am glad she released a statement….as a former Marine….I noticed the slip up…but honestly…she sang so great that people were in tears. Honey…it's not the first time someone missed a line or two, and it won't be the last. She still knocked it out of the park, in my opinion.

  12. 12

Hopefully no one will ever ask her to sing again.

  13. 13

I feel so bad about this. You could tell when she paused that she really lost her place. Because she even knew she messed up right away. I think it was very professional of her to continue on the way she did without skipping much of a beat. I would probably crumble under pressure too.
This is pretty much the biggest annual sporting event in America. I think she was just really honoured to be there so she felt it more. She's been singing it her whole life. How many people get to sing it at the Super Bowl?

  14. 14

It is a hard song, and I'm sure the pressure is huge…I think she did great. Everyone needs to lay off….people make mistakes….good Lord people can be heartless. She has one of the best voices in music. Let it roll off your shoulders…

  15. 15

i DID NOT even notice her mistake and I dont think people did anyway I think the media is just making a big deal of out this espicially you. I mean who the hell knows the whole song really who does? xtina is like the britney spears all over again the media is starting to treat her like shit espicially perez hilton. missing a small amount the lyrics is not disrespecting america perez. disrespecting america is when you call it shit how this country sucks. so yeah perez I am going to change but it seems to me your not changing one bit on xtina I don't like you perez.

  16. 16

This was excruciating to watch. She's a terrible "singer". Screaming in tune does not constitute singing. And there's no need to add 10 syllables to a word that only has one or two-oo-oo-oo-ooo-OOO-YAY-YA-YUUUHHH

  17. 17

It didnt even sound like a song!!!!!!!!

  18. 18

Let it go already…. she did a great job even with the eff up.

  19. 19

Google Xtina Vs Tory Lane. Hot mashup!

  20. 20

She can just fuck me and we will call it even!

  21. 21

I am still your biggest fan!!! Keep ur chin up, girl! :)

  22. 22

Epic Failure. Disgrace! It is the national anthem- she is an adult not some kid. She should know the lyrics by know. Let Jordan take care your son and check into rehab you disgusting train wreck!

  23. 23

it honestly wasnt even that bad… i didnt even notice until i saw this. granted i wasnt paying 100% attention to it but…. still if it was that horrible i would have noticed.

  24. 24

Perez should be the first to tell his readers the truth! X-Tina stole the show with this PR STUNT, wake up people she did this for attention, just like Perez used to do before he got all soft and fluffy. The Press is drawn to the negative and so are we. Today more people are talking about her 2min performance than game, the half time performance or the zillion dollar commercials. Turn on the news, its EVERYWHERE! The BEPS sounded horrible BTW, nobody's talking about that though!
The winner of this years superbowl is xtina, SAD BUT TRUE!

  25. 25

    take away her Social Security.

  26. 26

  27. 27

Big freaking deal, i bet 99.9% of people(including me)in the country don't know every single words of the song, those damn lyrics are crazy hard to remember, but most importantly she sang live and sounded great.
cristina showed all these non singer pop artists who got the real vocals. she's going thru what every artists go thru, a bad moment in their career but she would bounce back and be back on top cause she has something that a lot of the heffas out there now don't have: T-A-L-E-N-T AND REAL VOICE/VOCAL. cristina time is not limited, she will be here for years to come.

  28. 28

Well she sang it many times before, so it's not like she doesn't know the words. These things just happen. She did a great job otherwise.

  29. 29

People make mistakes…that's understandable. What's disrespectful is when you take a cherished song that's only supposed to be 30 seconds long and turn it into a 2 1/2 minute long song that sounds nothing like how it's supposed to. It drives me insane when people try to make it their own and perform the hell out of it…that's not what the national anthem is for! Sing it right or don't sing it at all

  30. 30

BIG FUCKING DEAL! Just goes to show how many people lack a functioning sense of proportion! Including Perez.

  31. 31

I don't see the big deal….. Look at her career and what she has achieved in the past and present and now people are judging that on one mistake which me personally, could not even see where it was? So really this post and all of the critical comments are worthless and mean nothing.

  32. 32

Re: cool_rain54 – What a ridiculous statement to make.

  33. 33

At least she didn't grab her crotch and spit on the ground at the end.

  34. 34

This is devastating? It wasn't even that bad, there were worse. But of course you'll post it to make it look like it was terrible because you hate her. She did pretty good in my opinion.

  35. 35

I am NOT a fan of hers but I can understand the butterflies she had.

  36. 36

The Queen of pop - You probably didn't notice her mistake because you don't know the national anthem yourself. From someone who knows it word-for-word. I noticed it right off back. She should have just lipped it like 95% of the other singers did. The anthem is lipped at the superbowl for a reason. Christina just wanted to showboat and FAILED.

  37. 37

Re: Luke Warm – I love Christina's voice, but you are so right - singing this song has become a competition. Just sing it like it was meant to be sung!

  38. 38

Is it just me or does xtina look like Snooki with a blonde wig?

  39. 39

come on now, how many americans know ALL the lyrics to the anthem? Who knew she fucked up when it happened? and how many of you moaning didn't even notice till you heard about it elsewhere?

  40. 40

Re: The Queen of pop – Uh, if you are going to perform it before millions of people, you'd BETTER know the whole song! But my 3rd grader nephew knows it, so there's that. HE noticed the mistakes! Don't pass it off because she's your idol. She screwed up, she owned it, so that's all. It was a horrible mess. If she can remember Genie in a Bottle, she should be able to remember the 8 lines of our anthem.

  41. 41

People are way too hard on her. This was no way near the "biggest performance of her career" and as others have said, many people have messed up this song before. She messed up, it happens, who cares?

  42. 42

She's such an assbag. Even her statement for fucking up a song every kid in America knows, she still can't help but be arrogant about it: "If only you little people could feel as amazing as I do about America, you would know what it's like ot be me — a better American than you."

  43. 43

I think her forgetting the words wasn't as bad as the way she sounded. She did not sound good at all. To "growly" and rough and too much melisma.

  44. 44

Every singer loses their place. I'm sure she's tired of people getting in her face and saying, "HEY, did you KNOW YOU MESSED UP THE WORDS? I KNOW I AM THE ONLY PERSON WHO IS TELLING YOU THIS, hur hurh."

The world is full of assholes. So she slipped up a little. Fuck. It's not the end of the world.

  45. 45

Hey Gurrrl….at least I made one

  46. 46

Re: The Queen of pop – Believe me, people noticed the mistake. This isn't some pop song that no one cares about- it's our National Anthem! Christina is a Grammy winning singer, a professional. She should be able to sing this song with no problems. If you are that big of an artist, you should be prepared. She has performed in front of thousands of people for years. If she can't perform the song correctly, then she should either lip synch or she should just not perform it at all. You have to bring it when you're that recognizable. She didn't.

  47. kmcv says – reply to this

It was a self indulgent attempt to show us her scatting/riffing skills. In doing so she lost the melody which would have kept her on track with the lyrics.

  48. 48

that was horrible - the screeching was horrible, her memory was horrible, she looked horrible……….wish someone would get somebody who can actually sing this song to sing it………..if she wasn't so worried about doing runs and sounding like she came out of the next neighborhoods black church, it could have possibly been okay……
just to make note - I used to love Aguilera…….she's trash anymore……..

  49. 49

It was no big deal. I'm so glad you aren't contributing to the mean press that's showing up everywhere about her today. I wish more people could be nice & celebrate what other people do right. That girl has more balls than I do getting up there (not to mention pipes) & I admire her for that.

  50. kmcv says – reply to this

Re: TaraMisu – She rewrote the melody messed up the Lyrics and treated the song like a greatest hit. It's the national anthem, the melody should be recognizable. She has a great voice, but she botched the job.

  51. 51

Eh…who cares? I can't even tell there was a mess up so whatever. People making a big deal of it just need to get a life.

  52. kmcv says – reply to this

Re: Hey Gurrrl – It is a big deal. If she were half a professional, she would have taken fewer liberties with the melody and maybe not lost her place in the song. It's not the end of the world, but call it what it was: an embarrassing exercise in self indulgence resulting in failure.

  53. slite says – reply to this

She sucked bad. Why does this friggin hack need to do her scales on every single damn note? Cant she just sing a song the way its written? She was terrible, she was awful and I think she should fade into the background or reinvent herself as anything but this. Hell, she was outsung by Fergie who just talked the entire time….and Usher, who didnt even open his mouth.

  54. 54

I do prefer a 'plain' version of the national anthem, but I actually liked her version. It gave me chills.

You could tell where she messed up because she paused. SHE could tell she messed up as soon as it happened, but she could't really stop and say 'Sorry I messed up' let me redo that one!

Its just like falling down on stage, you stand up and move on like it didn't happened. I doubt that Christina was like ' let me go screw up the national anthem in front of most of America..that will be a GREAT career move'. It was an honest mistake!

  55. 55

she did a great job…and her mistake is understandable i dont think it was a sign of disrespect!

  56. 56

I think she sounded really pretty and heartfelt. Hard song to do. Chin up BB.

  57. 57

Re: kmcv – Entertainers are seldom admired and respected for their ‘professionalism’. Christina was hired, primarily, for her vocal ability. She screwed up, just as you have, I have and all of us have in moments of our lives.

  58. 58

She did FAR BETTER than most any of the "complainers" would do, so kudos to her. Remember NO ONE is perfect!!!

  59. 59

At least she was actually singing! Gosh, it's definitely one of the hardest songs to sing live because you're more focused on actually hitting the notes and can easily lose your spot in the song! At least she didn't stop singing and she kept the song going, sign of a true artist with talent.

  60. 60

Yes it's a hard song but she had one friggin job. To sing the NATIONAL ANTHEM! She couldn't have taken a few extra minutes to learn the words instead of "making the song her own"? It's not your song lady it's OUR song sing it right. I think she just likes to hear the sound of her own voice.

  61. 61

To make a mistake is one forgivable thing but to sing with such an ugly and unpleasant voice is another. Where did good taste go, this young woman with yellow hair has a voice that would scare my cats and dogs for days. And she makes a living with such a vulgar voice, I don't understand. They should have asked Celine Dion to perform, at least she sings on key and has a beautiful voice (and never forgets the lyrics).

  62. 62

Everyone makes mistakes - she's only human, and cudos to her for actually singing live!

  63. 63

All she cared about was dragging every note she could forever and a day. She didn't care about the song/words/meaning!

  64. 64

Re: Hey Gurrrl – If you make mistakes to this degree in a workplace there would be consequences. She agreed to perform at the Superbowl and because of this it is her responsibility to know the lyrics. She has more than enough time to prepare herself for the song. It is ironic that when she sings about sex and sexual acts she can remember all the lyrics but when she sings about something of actual value (ie. the national anthem) she makes mistakes. She needs to stick with what she knows singing badly done pop songs and not to branch out.

  65. 65

Don't understand people saying half the people in the country don't know the song so give her a bre4ak.. Well she was the one hired for the gig and got paid for it.. she should have known, studied, whatever it took to memorize a simple song.. and that's the thing it is a simple song.. if she had sung it right instead of all the special shit then maybe she wouldn't have fucked up…

  66. 66

    Forget the haters Christina!
They sit at home feeding their faces & take pleasure critisizing people like yourself out there actually doing something.
    Take care.

  67. 67

Maybe if she didn't sing like a fucking retard she would have remembered the words.

  68. 68

She over sang it and tried too hard, that's why she screwed up. People do make mistakes, yes. But there are some songs you just sing the way they were written out of respect and honor and this is one of them.
Shame on her for trying to make it about her.

  69. 69

No excuses are acceptable for forgetting the lyrics to the National Anthem when that is your job.

  70. 70

    She was screaming as well.

I get that she was caught in the moment but her rendition was horrible to say the least.

Sing the song without screaming the words.

  71. 71

Haha! Christina: EVERYONE IS LAUGHING AT YOU!!! THEY'RE ALL GONNA LAUGH AT YOU! Ahahahahahaha! Now go hide under a rock and never come out! You and that ego of yours just got pwn3d.

  72. 72

lol im canadian and could even tell that twilight part was wayyy early lol

  73. 73

That was terrible! I couldn't tell she messed up because I couldn't even understand what she was singing. She should have just focused on the words and the feeling rather than worrying about throwing her vocals all over the place. Get Gagalupe to do it!

  74. 74

Re: Kodes100 – Yeah, she's "doing something" alright. She's getting fat and fucking up a song that she should have learned in grade school. Glad to know that shits like her get overpaid to do things like that.

  75. 75

xtina messing up lyrics is not what ruined her performance. Her rendition was horrible. Going back to messing up the lyrics, I dont believe for one mintue she got nervous…she's been on a bender since she sperated from her husband. SHe just approached this performance half ass because she was too busy messing around with her boy toy, eating Wendy's and drinking.

  76. Laury says – reply to this

The problem isn't that she messed up the lyrics, the problem is that she oversang it.

  77. 77

a hush fell over the stadium b/c the national anthem was being sung!!!!! God damn people are so uptight i'd like to see how many people can sing this song in front of millions of people and not mess up!!!!!!! and it was definitely not the performance of her career….this wasn't make or break for her, this "source" is trying to make her look bad. well at least it was LIVE and she sounded wayyyyy better than fergie! fergie sucks!!!! team christina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  78. 78

Im American and I dont know all the words to our song. Christina did a great job. The media is just so dumb. They have nothing els to report, so they have to pick on a celeb for missing ONE freakin line in the song. And alot, and i say ALOT of celebs who have sang that song, have messed it up worse than that. Its a tough one, get over it. And for the person who said I HATE WHEN THEY TRY TO MAKE IT THEIR OWN. THEY NEED TO SING IT LIKE IT WAS WRITEN. Wtf are you talking about? The song wasnt even a song when it was writen. It shows how much you know about America. And everyone makes that song, their own by singing it with all their heart. And alot get nervous which is totally normal and sometimes they mess up. Nothing wrong with it at all

  79. 79

I'm sure she meant no disrespect, but when you sing the National Anthem, there's no need to add your own singing style to it - just perform the song without all of the vocal acrobatics.

  80. 80

Hey I feel bad for her but she has sang this Anthem more than once soo she should know the words.Christina was oversinging soo she got caught up in making each note longer and got mixed up.I don't think she sounded that great this time it was like she was having a really hard time singing.

  81. 81

this is not a 'big' mistake. messing up lyrics to a song is NOT a big mistake. cheating on your wife is a big mistake, getting into a physical fight with someone and injuring them is a big mistake. charlie sheen's fiasco is a big mistake.

this is tiny, and an honest mistake. i would much rather hear someone sing live and make some mistakes, who cares about mistakes. we're all conditioned to find them embarrassing and be embarrassed for the person, but why? it's cause we're all so damned worried about being perfect. just relax. christina should let herself off the hook, and think about it in the grand scheme of things: not a big deal, AT ALL.

  82. 82

"Feel my love for this country" my ass - the only love you feel is for your own snotty stuck-up self and that fat paycheck you got for singing this travesty. Bitch, please!

  83. 83

I think people just try to find a reason to hate Christina. I think she's brilliant and I feel bad for her for this little slip up. It was a mistake. Why is everyone acting like she butchered it like Roseanne did when she sang the anthem? Give her props for finishing. I'd like to see someone else do it better in front of millions of people.

  84. 84

Her vocals were tight though, everyone HAS to admit that. She has a set of pipes and I am not even a fan! I am Canadian so perhaps that is why I am impartial to the fact that she effed up the words. As she mentions, she got caught up in it all. Her publicist said she "Blew" it… I highly doubt that is true. Even if it wrecks her in the USA, she will always have success in hundreds of other countries.

  85. 85

the only thing that came through in that performance was her love of booze and narcotics.

  86. 86

Hardly noticed. It didn't look like anyone else did either.

  87. 87

Maybe now she'll realize that she doesn't need to belt out every single note in order for the public to realize she's a good singer.

Stop cramming your voice down our throats and sing from the heart…not from the ego.

  88. 88

    that's what happens when u don't prepare

  89. 89

Re: SeedyPetee – shut up jealous bitch she got pay millios of dollars cuzz she is a pop superstar her fame is world wide and she is extremelly talented not for mess up with the national anthem(

  90. 90

Omg give her a break… it wasn't that bad. She lost her place on one line. At least she didn't let it completely throw her off, she got through the rest of the song just fine.

  91. 91

There were about 50 people at the party I was at and no one noticed. Why? Because we were already WASTED. People need to get over this. It was NO BIG DEAL!

  92. 92

Re: XTINA IS A POP MUSIC ICON!!! BICHES!! – the only reason why your defending her is because your the 13 year old girl who is downloading her song off of itunes

  93. 93

she was doing way too much to change the song, that she messed up. I was so shocked though, i though she would have at least practiced a little more, or written it on her hand

  94. 94

Poor Christina!! I love how people are like " She should at least know the lyrics etc." She has snag this song a million times so she knows the words. Poor girl… Its good to know that even a superstar like Christina still gets nervous sometimes!!! KEEP MOVING FORWARD CHRISTINA!!!

  95. 95

Why are you talking about Xtina but have video of Cyndi Lauper singing?

  96. 96

Hasn't she sung the song live in front of a crowd before? Sure it's an easy mistake, but I've seen 8 year old kids who can pull it off without a hitch.

  97. 97

Biggest fumble of the game - Christina Aguilera (tied with Mendenhall).

  98. @v@ says – reply to this

Still better than Roseanne's, hehe. Imperfection is human. She still sang the stink out of it. It's just one of life's many burps. Perfection can be boring.

  99. 99

Re: boshemie – I like the way you think. Sadly, you're one of the few.

  100. 100

Maybe if she had focused more on just singing the song instead of trying to show off her range she wouldn't have made this mistake.
I think it's disrespectful to sing an overly showy rendition of the national anthem…like this. Performers get too caught up in trying to sound impressive, but it's not all about them! It's about our country.
