First Listen! Glee Does Rent!

We've been waiting for Lea Michele and Amber Riley to have a duet on Glee since the show started and when we heard they were doing this number from Rent, we let our hopes get real high.

Girls… you did not disappoint! This is EXCEPTIONAL!

Sometimes we take real issue with the way the show arranges songs, but this sounds OUTSTANDING! A TRIUMPH!

Gleeks, we happily present you with a first listen to Glee's version of Take Me Or Leave Me! (above)

They were born to sing this! If they don't sing this live, we'll be heartbroken!

This solely made me want to listen to the original. There's no style or attitude in Glee's version. It's sad that young kids don't know the Broadway version of Rent instead of the movie and Glees "version." (BTW, this song is with two lesbians, I bet you leave that part out)

  2. 2

Meh. There's no way this even compares to the Idina Menzel and Tracie Thoms version. I hate how Ryan Murphy is trying to make Lea Michele the next Idina Menzel - her voice doesn't even compare to Idina! I usually love Amber Riley but it sounds like she wasn't really allowed to shine in this song. I'll stick to the original, thanks.

  3. 3

Technically its not between two lesbians - one lesbian and one bisexual woman. And I LOVE this version. Just wish it was the whole song!

  4. 4

    ummmm no

  5. 5

And Ryan Murphy wants to replace his current talent with ???? when he KILLS the show?! You are going to lose a lot of fans. These girls are amazing!

  6. 6

coming from a huge renthead: they did Idina and Fredi justice :)

  7. 7

This version really lacked personality… =(

  8. 8

@swlondon Ha thank you, that makes quite a difference!

This is.. Meh. No attitude. I need anger!!!

  9. 9

OMG!!! I am super excited right now! Glee is my favorite show and Rent is my favorite play. Perez, you made my day with this! :D

  10. 10

good cover! but its just a cover no one can top Idina and Fredi!!!!

  11. 11

I agree its not as good as the original or even the movie soundtrack version, but its still good. I

  12. 12

this was a good cover it was more like the stage version rather than the movie version

  13. 13

OMG This is my favourite RENT song!!!! It's not bad, but everyone else is right, not harsh enough, not as much passion. Cant wait to see the episode :)

  14. 14

I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People say that it lacks persanality, but you haven't even seen how they preform ………………….. so all haters GO FUCK YOURSELVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: MissMusicJG – I would just like to say, to you and everyone else that complained about lack of attitude, that you really don't know in what context this song is going to be used. While yes, in the original format, it is used as an arguement between a couple. However, the song, if put into a different context, can carry whole new meanings. Look more at what is going to be done with the song before you judge it. Sounds more like women empowerment when you actually break it off from the original storyline and make it two women singing it to a group. Take me the way I am or leave me.

I'm a HUGE renthead the original will always be the best but they chose the right singers to do this song. Only Lea Michele and Amber Riley could have pulled this off. They did a great job I just wish they would have done the 2 separate parts like in the original song but whatever! I love it. I'm excited to see how it plays out on tv

Re: James HansonRe: goosegui – I totally agree with both of you. This doesn't lack personality or attitude. Amber Riley had more emotion than Lea, yeah, but this sounded damn good. They're amazing.

  18. 18

I'll stick with the the original…I'm just not feeling it with this. Lea Michele sounds the same with every song she sings, there's no real emotion behind it. Amber Riley could've done really well with this, but auto-tune eats them both up and spits out this over edited version instead.

  19. Eilee says – reply to this

UGHHHHHHH Leah is back _ GO AWAY your voice is so contrived BLECHHHHHH

  20. 20

the only thing I find interesting about this rendition is that Idina Menzel originated the song and currently is cast as the biological mother of Rachel, Lea Michele's character on Glee.
The energy just doesn't live up to the live (or even movie) version of the song.

  21. 21

They cut the Joanne verse!!! No bueno.

  22. 22

I'm sorry but why did they make it sound as though Lea's voice is more powerful than Amber's? There is no way in hell that's the case. That girl can sing her ass off. It almost sounds like Amber wasn't allowed to shine in this song and in every part where Amber wasn't singing alone all you could hear was Lea. Whoever this girl's manager is is doing a good job, but it is getting fucking annoying. There are other people on the show who can sing better than her. Its not a bad thing, let everyone shine! Especially since Lea has has a solo in EVERY single episode of Glee since the start. There is not one time I can think of where she hasn't. That shit is just unfair now. Its like its becoming Lea's show.

  23. 23

no, just no. ambers voice is amazing but this song does it no justice. lea michele can just go away. shell never be as amazing as idina, mostly because idina is a wonderful person as well as a singer

  24. 24

I definitely understand how sometimes when you find out Glee is doing something so meaningful to yourself, it's hard to listen without criticizing but this is pretty good. I with they'd stuck to the original arrangement of the song, but Amber Riley really rocks her vocals as always. Lea Michele is an obvious choice to cover Idina Menzel's part.

  25. 25

WHYYYYY do you have such a hard on for glee perez??!?!?!?! this is AWFUL!!!! Ive heard MUCH better at my local non-equity tour production… glee is nothing but KIDZ BOP!!! How can you not recognize that?!?!!??!!?!

  26. 26

This is not good. Lea Michelle sounds like a little mouse trying to keep up with a lion. Nicole Scherzinger is the only person I have ever heard come close to Idina. Two Thumbs down!

  27. 27

This rendition isn't bad and it is pretty good but it is far from "exceptional". Seriously exceptional????? I absolutely love RENT and I have listened to different versions and my absolute fav is Idina and Tracie. Everyone likes things a little different, but you cannot call this Glee version "exceptional".

  28. 28

I'm starting to believe that Ryan Murphy is using this this show as a vehicle to showcase his fantasies of what high school should have been like for him.

  29. 29

BOOOOOOO They cut a whole verse! It's ok, but it doesn't come close to the original. GLEE is disappointing me more than impressing me this season.

  30. 30

    This is really bad.

  31. 31

I don't like the adjustments to the song. The original was in perfect balance with the belting and they just made it OVER the top. It's almost only belting and adlibbing. Thats not what the song is about. Yes It can show of strong voices very well, but the song is sssooo strong because of the context. I know it's a kids show so that's probebly the reason they changed it. But for me it doesn't do halve the justice to the song as it should have :( :(

  32. 32

    i LOVE it

  33. 33

oh boo hoo, 'this doesn't have emotion, it doesn't live up to the original'. haters gonna hate. i find people who hate on something that has a lot of fanatical fans (e.g. bieber, glee) just as bad as the obsessive fans, it's just obsessive hatred instead, which is worse. i love this version, not as much as the movie version but it's still AMAZING. and i'm sure when i see it play out on glee i'll love it even more! oh and LEA MICHELE isn't the next idina or anyone, she's her own person who has bucket loads of talent and personality. i say give her ALL the songs to sing on glee. probably would be an improvement.

  34. 34

i want to see this lol

  35. 35

All I see in these comments is a bunch of haters who to put other people down. Lea has been on Broadway many times and now she's on a hit TV show and Amber has had many accomplishments too. They are both very talented in their own way and if they weren't they wouldn't have got picked for the show. And for those people who are saying that Lea's a bad person, can you please educate me to when you last had conversation with her? And when she was a bitch to you personally? These stars carry a lot of pressure and you shouldn't get down on them just cause you don't like their voice or dance steps.
