Glee Exclusive! Ryan Murphy Clears Up Rumors About Blaine's Sexuality

| Filed under: Exclusives!Gay Gay GayGleeChris ColferLGBT

Over the weekend, speculation over a blind item ended up taking up momentum and it became widespread "knowledge" that Glee's newbie character Blaine, played by Darren Criss, would actually end up being bi instead of gay.

Ryan Murphy, co-creator of the show, got wind of this rumor and decided to share with us exclusively the truth of the matter. In an email he just shot over to us, Ryan explained:

"Blaine is NOT bi. He is gay, and will always be gay. I think it's very important to young kids that they know this character is one of them."

Agreed! Blaine's character has already been established and to veer off from that would just seem like a ratings ploy to us.

Besides, we know a lot of kids are really rooting for Klaine (that's Kurt and Blaine, aka Chris Colfer and Darren, for those of you who don't speak Gleek) to get together before season's end. Best not to screw with the hopes and dreams of Gleeks!

So pretty much Ryan is saying that bi people are not "one of them" aka they don't exist. Nice…

  2. 2

Is Darren Criss just playing a gay man or is he really a gay man in real life? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

  3. 3

Funny, I don't remember you having listed it as a "blind item." I could have sworn I skipped over reading a GLEE spoiler.

  4. 4

"…this character is one of them." what is THAT supposed to mean? Murphy and bi-bashing, one true pairing…

  5. 5

Bi kids/adults always get the shaft.

  6. 6

Why is it that all the gays who appear on this site are convinced that every one is Gay, and if they can't have it that way then they'll make them Gay in their world. So far isn't pretty much everyone on Glee gay, or planning to come out or or or. Gay is the new black. Thing is most people aren't gay. Thats one thing the mafia cant change, so quit trying.

Will someone please explain to me why being gay (Kurt, etc.) is more important/prominent/of the moment/seminal, than being handicapped (Artie) or in the ethnic minority (Mercedes, the Asian kids)?
Why so much focus on one aspect when there are so many others? What about religious kids?
I watch "Glee" for its entertainment value, but lately it's like getting hit over the head with a mallet. And it's supposed to be set in Ohio, but it doesn't seem like a real small town. I mean, heck, how does this public school even have the budget for the stuff they do on "Glee" every week?

Like I said… it will be Chord's character who's Bi, not Blaine.
Personally I dislike Blaine w/Kurt. It's too easy.

Re: grannyho – Darren's straight in real life, he just plays a gay character, something he's really passionate about and adamant on letting everyone know.

  10. 10

Uhm…how exactly would Blaine being bi make it impossible that he could end up being Kurt's boyfriend??????? God forbid they have a bisexual on the show who doesn't live up to the ridiculous 'slutty as hell'-bisexual stereotype (like Brittany and Santana).

"Blaine is NOT bi. He is gay, and will always be gay. I think it's very important to young kids that they know this character is one of them."

Hey Ryan Murphy: This quote really comes off as "hetero hate" or "bi hate." You should be careful with comments like this. What a horrible message to send to "young kids" who might be exploring their sexuality and/or not knowing what side of the fence they might want to be on.

This comment is filled with the exact same intolerance that "queer haters" often spew. All of it makes me sick. You should know better than to speak like this, Ryan Murphy.

I'd like you to clarify your statement. What exactly does not "one of them" actually mean? Are you hating on the bi's? Do you hate heterosexuals? It certainly sounds like it.

PS: Mario, you're a fucking idiot.

  12. 12

Well I'm sure glad he cleared that up now I can get some sleep!

    PLEASE …get a LIFE!

  13. 13

….well, now I'm curious as to how this is gonna play out on the show. I keep hearing different things from all kinds of different places. the klaine fans are having mini freakouts. I hope whatever happens in that ep pushes them closer together.

  14. 14

    Re: grannyho

    Darren Criss is straight.

  16. 16

Hmm, You understand that if he was Bi that him and Kurt could still get together, right? I don't get why it's so important that he just has to be completely gay and not Bi.

  17. 17

Oh, noes! A teenage boy having second-thoughts about his sexuality- STOP THE PRESSES!

I find the relief at this announcement vaguely offensive. If a straight person had got his knickers in a twist at the announcement that his favorite straight television character might have a twinkling of romantic feelings towards another guy, he'd be called a close-minded homophobe. The storyline would be called 'revolutionary' (even though it's been done a million times). Eventually, that twinkling of romantic feelings would lead to the grand revelation that the character is actually gay, and the world would cheer!

There's a sick attitude out there that people need to just 'pick a side' and stick with it. In fact, bisexuality is natural. It's NORMAL for straight people to be 'just a little gay' or gay people to be 'just a little straight'. Sexuality is a SPECTRUM! This sort of distain for someone because they don't fit firmly into either end of the spectrum is just another form of homophobia.

  18. 18

I don't think Ryan Murphy is bi-bashing at all! There have been two bi characters on this show since the beginning, or is everyone forgetting about Santana and Britney???

  19. 19

geeze the bi people need to calm down, obviously he is supposed to be a role model for kurt and other GAY kids to be sure of who they are and it is not slamming bi kids. sorry that you cant accept that

  20. 20

  21. 21

    That would have been RIDICULOUS

  22. 22

I'm Bi myself, and all the comments that has been coming out about Darren Criss' character possibly being Bi has been so negative toward the idea of bisexuality.

It exists people, and it is just as confusing, and hard.

  23. 23

Yo Bi people and gay haters on this site: y'all need to calm down! Just BC some gays would be disappointed that Blaine is Bi doesnt mean that we're anti-bi.. more just anti-blaine bi. Blaine was introduced to Glee as Kurt's big crush. Yes he can be bi and still be with Kurt but obviously a story line where he's exploring his bisexuality is a story line where he's not getting with Kurt. Also, i think there's a sense of pride to have a gay like Blaine represented on Glee. If he was Bi that would be fine but he was introduced as a gay character so i think there would be some understandable disappointment from some. Finally, in my experience, people don't go from gay to bi they go from bi to gay so this story line would be questionable.

  24. 24

I'm glad Ryan cleared it up because I was really disappointed with them when I thought it was true

  25. 25

Re: foodie4booty – In my experience, some people DO go from gay to bi. And yes, they were guys, and yes, they were all of a sudden seen as traitors by most of their gay friends. Just because you haven't personally experienced something doesn't mean it never happens. I see your point though, and I have absolutely no problem with Blaine remaining 100%gay, he is a great character.

I do wish they could have a bisexual character on the show (or any show) who doesn't live up to the bisexual stereotype of being slutty as hell, constantly cheating and always ending up with someone from the opposite gender just because it's easier. But that character obviously doesn't have to be Blaine. :)

  26. 26

    UNLIKE: thumbs down.

You can cheer on the Gay Confirmation that has now been bestowed, but the statement issued remains an indictment of bi people..

He might just as well have said, "it's very important to young Bi kids that they know this character is NOT one of them" Well, don't worry, young bi kids know their lot is already between a rock and a hard fence.

Just wonderful to know that GLEE's co-creators endorse a form of Reality TV - extending support of Bi exclusion from the rainbow.

  27. 27

Oh well, so glad Ryan Murphy cleared THAT up. After all we certainly wouldn't want the purity of the precious Gay/Lesbian Community polluted by those nasty bisexual kids would we. *rolls eyes*

  28. 28

Funny, I'm bi, so if I was going to take a character as someone like me, it would sure help a lot if they shared my fucking sexuality. Guess not. Next decade, maybe?
