We can't imagine the pain that Liam Neeson must still feel after having lost his wife, Natasha Richardson, in that shocking ski accident two years ago. He's been rather private about the ordeal, handling his grief without the involvement of the press, but this week, for the first time, he's opening up about his loss.

In the March issue of Esquire, Liam recounts the horrible day of Natasha's accident and explained how he almost didn't get to spend her precious last moments together. He explained:

"I walked into the emergency — it's like seventy, eighty people, broken arms, black eyes, all that — and for the first time in years, nobody recognizes me. Not the nurses. The patients. No one… So I went outside. It's freezing cold, and I thought, What am I gonna do? How am I going to get past the security?"

Luckily, a nurse who was on her smoke break finally did recognize Liam and escorted him to Natasha right away. It was there that a group of "young doctors" gave him the "worst" news of his life. Liam reveals that in order to escape the pain after her death, he threw himself into work. He added:

"It's easy enough to plan jobs, to plan a lot of work. That's effective. But that's the weird thing about grief. You can't prepare for it. You think you're gonna cry and get it over with. You make those plans, but they never work…It hits you in the middle of the night — well, it hits me in the middle of the night. I'm out walking. I'm feeling quite content. And it's like suddenly, boom. It's like you've just done that in your chest."

Poor man. He misses her so much - probably always will. It was really brave of him to come forward like this. Maybe talking about it more will help ease some of the pain.

Our thoughts are still with you, Liam, and your boys.

lol. it sounds like he was more pissed than no one recognized him.

Liam Neeson has always been a class act. He's a Dutchess County, NY neighbor, if you will, and he is well regarded.
He came to the U.S. from The Troubles of Northern Ireland and worked hard at his craft. He's not one for tearing up hotel rooms or any other buffoonery. He was in a committed marriage and adored his family.
I recently watched "Darkman" again. This actor always delivers. Best of luck.

    Great man! Great actor.

What? You can't see anybody in the hospital unless you're famous? This doesn't make any sense. All he needed to do was walk up to the nurse or HUC on duty and ASK, like a polite civilian, not a pampered celebrity.

Loved her. Love him. They made such a beautiful couple.

I'm pretty sure talking about his pain to the press is not going to help him get through it.

Wow people can be so cruel. There's actually more to this story. Liam was quoted as saying that when he went to emergency he said who he was, but they still didn't let him go see her. Imagine how franctic he was? He was alone and he couldn't get to his love. He probably wasn't in a calm enough state to simply go to the nurse and ask to see his wife. Have a heart people.

Tragedy, felt horrible for him and their family, with that said-so no one recognized him, so what? Did he really expect that because he's famous they wud push him ahead of everyone else waiting to see their loved one? What a ridiculous thing to say! I still like him as an actor but he's just typical Hollywood douche like the rest I guess, shame….

Whether anyone agrees or not, the actor was just stating his opinion; his feelings. I doubt he was trying to throw his weight around. He just wanted to get to his wife. Unless you have truly lost someone that you really cared about. Its really, really hard to maintain control. Even though I have lost someone 15yrs ago and am over my grief. I can remember how lost I felt. It is true, when you least suspect it your grief will come ten fold. Its not easy, I know. Compassion, sympathy for your fellow man.

I'm surprised he didn't say "Don't you know who I am ? " Ms. Richardson would not have died had she accepted to go to the hospital as soon as the accident happened, like it was strongly suggested to her by the medical personnel at the resort. Liam Neeson greatly disappoints me with his comments, his wife got the best treatment possible under the circumstances. BTW he has a new woman in his life already.

That is so sad. Poor Liam. That makes me wanna cry. I feel so bad for him. This is such a horrible thing to go through, I'm sure. It was just sad to lose her that way. We should just give him the respect he deserves!
