Matt Damon Made A Huge Mistake, Turned Down Avatar Role

matt damon turned down avatar role

We could understand if he had turned down Ocean's Thirteen, or Green Zone…but Avatar? Really?

According to reports, Matt Damon was in talks with James Cameron to star in Avatar, but he turned the role down.

Here's what he had to say about it:

"I talked to Cameron and I read the script and I knew the movie was gonna be a big hit. I really wanted to do Avatar and work with Jim Cameron and watch him direct and learn a lot."

"We were finishing The Bourne Ultimatum, and I couldn't leave. It was a scheduling issue."

Too bad, Matt, but at least it worked out for Sam Worthington, who ended up taking the role. If things had gone differently, Sam could still be struggling for bit parts on JAG. Ha!

Did U like Sam Worthington in Avatar? Do U think Matt Damon would have been better?

Well its hard to say we fell in love with Sam, however we will never know how it would of turned out if Matt did it.

Thank God this potato face closet case wasn't in Avatar!!! Sam Worthington is a million times hotter and better!!!

Matt Damon also said it was a scheduling issue and had no choice but to say no. You should really reread your articles before you post them. Matt Damon didnt have choice he couldnt do the movie, god your fucking dumb

Sam Worthington was perfect for the role, I can't imagine Matt Damon in it at all…

  6. 6

I'm glad Matt Damon wasn't in it - I'm actually less likely to go see movies with the big names in them. I like to be drawn in and not know anything about the actors or actresses' lives.

  7. 7

    Isn't he ALREADY rich enough?

  8. 8

I'd take Matt Damon, acting wise, over Sam Worthington any day of the week, besides Avatar was a springboard for C-list actors anyway.

  9. 9

I'm glad it wasn't Matt Damon.

Matt would have been much better but the story of Avatar sucked. Worthington is so "one tone". He's always the same… he's not a great actor.

please matt damon is old looking now. if james cameron asked matt damon 10 years ago to do it then i would say hell ya but the man is getting fat and old. next please!

  12. 12

Looks like you are trying to make a story out of nothing…as usual!

  13. 13

I'm so glad he did not take the role. Sam Worthington was wonderful as the lead. Matt Damon just isn't exactly right.

Re: Crabbey – I'm a big movie person and I soooo agree with you. I don't like movies that have well-known actors or actresses unless it's someone classic…

  15. 15

Matt's Awesome, but he would have never worked in that role.

Matts career is better then most. Not taking a role in avatar is not that big of a deal. To call it a mistake is a stupid. Not like it ended his career or anything, besides he is very rich anyway. The movie would have done just fine with him but sometimes it is nice to see someone not so well known in a role like that. Avatar is not even that good of a movie. Buy the way Matt is not aging to well. He looks like my 83 year old father.

Matt Damon was robbed, not getting nominated for Best Supporting Actor in True Grit.

  18. 18

    Avatar is beneath Matt Damon

  19. 19

i think sam did a great job in the role. i find with matt damon i never ever connect with his characters, they're just "matt damon"

  20. 20

Good for him. The movie is horrible.

  21. 21

Matt Damon's career is fine without Avatar on his resume. I really don't think the role was meaty enough for him.

  22. 22

No offense to Matt Damon, but I think part of the reason the movie worked was because Worthington was a relative unkown.

  23. 23

Cameron already chose Worthington, he pro forma talked to a couple of A-listers to satisfy the studio.

  24. 24

ofcourse matt damon wouldve been incredible! but Sam pulled it off & deserved his big break :)

  25. 25

I don't think I would of seen the movie if Matt was in it.. No offense to him but nearly all the movies he's in I end up disliking.
