Banksy Blasts A Billboard In El Lay!

But it went just as soon as it came.

Yesterday, we were thrilled to hear Banksy was back on the prowl, popping up in some discreet places with some fresh new paint. However, we've just gotten word that he popped up AGAIN, and this time he went all out!

As peeps were commuting to work this week in Hollywood, they were greeted by a huge billboard blasted with Banksy's art on Sunset Blvd. For several days, his Mickey Mouse inspired graffiti graced the skies to the delight of all of his fans. However, this morning, the billboard company sent workers to take the art down. Apparently, CBS doesn't rank as one of Banksy's fans. We hear the local gas station positioned right under the billboard offered the workers $10k for the art, but the company refused.

What makes this story really interesting is that the billboard clients, The Light Group, are actually FURIOUS that their ad was taken down. While some companies would have been ticked off that their ad was "destroyed" like that, The Light Group told sources they were "flattered" Banksy chose their billboard as his canvas and would have been happy to have kept it up. They insist that it was CBS' outdoor advertising department's decision to tear it down, not theirs. In a statement to sources, the company's rep explained:

"We're extremely pissed … It's our billboard that got tagged .. it's not their billboard … CBS clearly has ZERO appreciation for art!!! We were flattered Banksy tagged on our ad — it was epic."

The Light Group was told it will be allowed to keep the work of art, but so far, they haven't received it.

Total bummer! We wish more people would learn to appreciate Banksy's skill and mystery! Boo on you, CBS!

"Total bummer! We wish more people would learn to appreciate Banksy's skill and mystery! Boo on you, CBS!" Maybe they would appreciate his art… if it wasn't defacing SOMEONE elses property.. or something they paid for. He cant buy his own damn billboard space? Glorifying vandalism is ridiculous. And PS those billboards look NOTHING alike.. the tree in the front is missing…. the trees to the right are skinnier in one.. and the gas station all of a sudden is not even in the photo… (thought abt the concept of different angles.. but you'd still be able to see at least a portion of the roof) And how is depicting two NOTABLY FAMOUS CHILDRENS ICONS as drunken boozers art?

I think of the Mickey and Minnie on the billboard to manifest the state of modern Disney and what shit it puts out compared to the good Disney stuff back in the early '90s and before. It's a mere reminder that the likes of Miley, Selena, and the Jonas Brothers ruined what was once a phenomenon. Think about it; disney stars now drink, do drugs, and sleep around like adults, and they're supposed to represent the Disney franchise, which is intended for KIDS, so what better way is there to expose corporate lies than to depict CHILDRENS' characters doing ADULT things?

"What makes this story really interesting is that the billboard clients, The Light Group, are actually FURIOUS that their ad was taken down. While some companies would have been ticked off that their ad was "destroyed" like that," And how does that make the story really interesting and you say "actually furious" like this is so absurd.. chances are if you spent all that money to advertise youd be pissed too if someone defaced it. Freaking tool box.

How would anyone know that this was Banksy's work. Do we just assume that all graffiti is done by Bansky now? This doesn't look like any of his work.

So strange. Especially since Disney is known for its sense of humor.

It's the same side of the billboard. One is shot a lot closer and more from the street than the sidewalk. The shingled roof is on our side in both pics, the ladder is on the same side. Just show at different angles folks.

Re: dallas2185 – no it isnt..look even more carefully…the tree is behind the billboard and u can see a wedge of it between the 76 gas station and the roof of that house of store…if ur talking about teh PALM tree you see right in front on the first picture that splits the billboard in half then you confused yourself with the angle…sunset is lined with palm trees on the side walk so the first picture was taken from an angle somewere in the middle of the road thats why the palm tree looks like its obstructing then billboard, while the second picture was taken on the sidewalk thats why you can see the palm trees lined up

Disney is definitely not feeling the love for him right now!! After he pulled that huge stunt at Disneyland…and now this…I'm sure the Disney police are the ones that took it down. Surprised it took as long as it did. Love me some Banksy!!

I am from Britain and like a lot of British people I LOVE Banksy and love his work. In fact for those of you saying it's just common vandalism Banksy can actually increase tourism and in some areas with Banksy paintings in the UK house prices have actually risen because of him. It's more than mindless vandalism. Also yes he is British but he also does work world wide for example he did a lot of work in Israel on the barrier so he has done work elsewhere and I think his work in America is to do with the Oscars and his Oscar nomination (again, showing he's more than just a criminal defacing property!!). BUT I agree this doesn't look like his work at all and I'm a big fan. He does use mice a lot but his work is less cartoon like and more about silhouettes and things like that so I'd like to know if this is really him.

I didn't know defacing private property classified as "art." Our society really is sad.

    Re: pdubulatron
he has claimed it on his website. And people who deal in his work can authenticate it. it's already been authenticated and confirmed a Banksy.

    Re: Fresh2def313
haha! Open your mind! Isn't it sad that only the rich can afford to have billboards and have their voices heard? Banksy is just evening the playing field- bringing something meaningful to the masses, bringing art into our daily lives. Funny how one little image can snap us out of our coma and create a big discuss about art. So rarely in America does the common person have a voice in the debate. It's just not part of our culture. In England there are laws to protect Banksy's work. In other countries there are special reserved spaces for street artists to work. Is it really a loss if a mega-corporation loses a billboard for a few days? I mean, REALLY?

boo? boo to defacing someone elses property. maybe this assclown would love to have his bs art tagged over with grang graffiti.

  20. 20

    SAMO WAS HERE

  21. 21

obviously this guy is gifted yet creative. and it is cool to see his art randomly around town. but seriously? defacing something that people actually spent money on to advertise.. is called defacing property. and it doesn't look classy when gangsters do it around town. i love this guy but that kind of went too far on messing up a whole billboard. but i guess if the company was ok with it then it is. but i understand why other people assumed it was just graffitti and took it down.

Re: Fuego – what?? I wasn't saying anything bad about banksy… i respect him and his work, i love it. Guess you haven't seen exit through the gift shop i was talking about mr.brainwash who completely jacked banksy's style. Watch that docu its the shit
