Target's Giving Policy To Change

Target And Target Dog Apologize

Remember last year when an outrage was heard over Target donating money that ended up being used to help an anti-gay candidate run for election in Minnestoa?

If not, this is what happened in a nutshell:

"Minneapolis-based Target, a retailer known for trendy but inexpensive merchandise, drew protests and boycott threats last year after it was revealed it had donated $150,000 to MN Forward, which in turn took out ads supporting Republican gubernatorial nominee Tom Emmer, an opponent of marriage equality and other LGBT causes. He narrowly lost the November election to gay-friendly Democrat Mark Dayton."

Well Target has heard our issues with it and is putting a new committee into effect that will oversee the money they give out!

The source explains:

"Among the changes is the establishment of a committee of senior executives to oversee donations to candidates, parties, and political action committees."

“The policy committee and our CEO are responsible for balancing our business interests with any other considerations that may be important to our team members, our guests or other stakeholders."

Well that's good! We're DEF glad to see that you guys are making an effort to reflect the stances and wishes of the customers who felt negatively affected by this!

The source continues:

"[It was] emphasized that the retailer has donated to gay groups and events, such as Minnesota’s Project 515 and Twin Cities Pride, and that it plans to offer support to pride events in Chicago and San Francisco."

We're happy to see the progress!!

Keep it up, bbs!

Thoughts on this??

I doubt this would have even pinged your radar if it weren't for Copy Gaga releasing her cd there…The ONLY reason I'm not totally cynical about this posting is because you showed the retraction on the Chic-fil-a mess…

I don't think Target should give to any political groups, gay supporting or not. There are people just as outraged that they're going to give money to pro-gay groups. So there.

I live in mpls and I know a ton of people who work for target at all different levels and I can say with confidence that target is a really good company. this whole thing was so stupid because target is one of the best companies as far as extending benefits to same sex partners. They give so much to the community and everyone i know who works there loves their job. This was just an unfortunate mistake that got blown out of proportion due to the intense gubernatorial race that year. everyone wants to dump on target for this but no-one ever acknowledges them for the good things they do every day. They set an example I wish most companies would follow.
    go target!

Target is making progress? Target was one of the first companies to allow employees to extend their benefits to same-sex partners, like 25 years ago. You have no idea what you are talking about Perez.

Yet another group caves to the gay mafia.

I have never commented on anything here but after reading this sorta had to. I work at target in mn, a flagship store…. anyway they are going to give money to gay groups but have the logo channel parental blocked in the breakroom? WTF.

    Target is anti union!

before the citizens united ruling by the supreme court, this wouldnt have been an issue. Individuals could give their own personal money to whatever cause without really being reflected on the company (99% of the time). Now, its actual target profits earned by target workers that goes to causes, whatever that may be. Supreme court fucked up on that one. corporations are NOT private citizens united.

Re: alexie silver – You don't even know who is on this committee, so why would you even say that? It must suck to be such a cynic. You're a generally unhappy person, aren't you. Sorry.

Oh joy, so I guess this means you approve of us buying lady gaga CDs from target now?

And there goes another piece of America's freedoms, down the drain. I guess we are now starting to live in a communist country where no one is free to do anything unless they first consult the PC police to make sure they give to everyone so no one can be "offended or slighted". Fuck you. I may support gay issues, and not liked what they did, but they certainly have every right to support whomever they want, that WAS what America USED to stand for.
