Where Did MTV Go Wrong With Skins??

skins-ratings-continue-to-decline

Yeah. We have a feeling that there probably won't be a second season. Which is probably for the best.

With the exception of the surprisingly thoughtful and well-written fourth episode, we think everyone can agree that the US adaptation of the series Skins has sucked pretty hard, and as proof, last week's episode garnered less than a million viewers! And although some suggest that the only reason MTV is keeping the show on the air is to reinforce its status as an 'edgy' network, it sounds as though the controversy surrounding it isn't even resonating with their demographic!

Dan Isett, the director of public policy for the Parents Television Council, complains:

“At this point, the only advertising that you see on the show, aside from Clearasil, are movie trailers and various direct marketing type of things. So, there’s virtually no mainline commercial support for this show. There’s no economic reason to keep ‘Skins’ on the air. If I were a Viacom shareholder, I’d be upset that my corporate management is going out of their way to lose me money by putting on this show.”

And TV critic Ben Mandelker continues:

“Quite frankly—no one I know watches ‘Skins.' Absolutely no one is talking about ‘Skins’ on the Internet. Maybe in some forum, somewhere, but it’s not being talked about on Vulture, Gawker—I’m not seeing links on Facebook, I’m not seeing things on Twitter. I forget the show is even on. I don’t even know when it’s on, to be honest. If you’ve seen pictures of this cast, they look sickly. Not only do they look sickly, they actually look their age—and they’re all shirtless. There’s sort of an ‘ick’ quality to it. And 'Skins' seems to take itself very, very seriously. Ever since they first started showing ads for it last year, it just didn’t make sense. You just saw all of these wasted, malnourished kids …, and it just wasn’t appealing. It totally misses the mark, whether it’s because it gives you that ‘icky’ feeling or because it doesn’t look like a fun show.”

Ouch! A sad truth, unfortunately.

Perhaps if the network had spent less time trying to make it as controversial as possible, they could have instead focused on writing a series that actually applied - and felt relevant - to American teenagers, which is what the UK series did so well. It took the time to make the characters REAL and honest, and for the most part, we've yet to see that in the adaptation.

That's why we liked the Cassie Cadie episode so much. It took the idea from the original, and modified it to create a very specific, relevant - and touching - statement on our country's tendency to overmedicate our youth. Unfortunately, the other episodes have yet to make that kind of impact, and we doubt that the ones to come will be able to, either.

Such a shame. It really had so much potential.

What do U think?? Are U still watching Skins??

Shut up Perez, they didn't try to make it controversial, they copied everything that happened in the UK version of the show. And that's why no one is watching cause they did a crap job of copying something that already exists and is ten times better.

  2. 2

the problem with it is that its just a rip off of the original version. maybe if they has changed it more to suit an american audience rather than copying the english version, it would have worked

  3. 3

    –>MTV

  4. 4

Didn't you go on Ellen and say that you don't watch TV? (I'm pretty sure it was on Ellen but it could've been somewhere else). So how, then, are so many of your posts about TV shows? Skins, Vampire Diaries, True Blood, X Factor, etc.? Either you have people working for you (who would want to work for you, I have no idea), you're ripping off other websites, or you're just a damn liar. Options 2 and 3 seem the most likely.

  5. 5

For some reason I try to watch this show every week, but it's just awful. The show is boring, and the people in it are unlikeable.

  6. 6

MTV went wrong with Skins when they took a show that is cutting edge and made a watered down version with absolutely no integrity or direction. It tries way too hard. They shouldn't have touched it, they were bound to fail from jump.

  7. 7

this show is like degrassi on crack!!! At least on degrassi there are some happy people, with skins NO ONE IS HAPPY!!! Their all sad and depressed and that may work for the UK but for America it just wont do

  8. 8

i actually like skins. i've never seen the UK version- but i thought the show was really interesting! It sucks because always fall asleep before its on, but this show definitely caught my attention! I hope they don't cancel it!!!!

  9. 9

they look sickly and their own age? they look NORMAL! i couldn't give a damn about MTV, but they have that ghastly jersey shore on, those people look sick.

  10. 10

I don't watch MTV shows, and especially not ripoffs of UK shows.

  11. 11

I never watched the UK version, cause I have yet to see it on my channels in FL.But for some reason, I love and am intrigued by the show. Some part's could be better writing, but I like it some of the episodes.Esp Caddie…..she reminded of me when I was her age.she is my favorite character yet.But none the less, I think the series shows lot's of true character's to many in this world, and I am one of them…..I say Thumbs up to a second season, but with a few fixes.

  12. 12

mtv went wrong with skins as soon as they said they were making it. i loved skins back in the day when i was 16 so i thought i would check the us version and i was shocked by what they have done. its all wrong. in our version we have sex, nudity and swearing where as the us one has hardly any of it, tbh mtv should just quit now and just show the uk one its so much better. plus some of the parents and advert companies are going ott over the whole skins thing.

  13. 13

I'm a huge fan of the UK version, but most people are right about this version - it is boring, miscast and completely does not translate to the US.

  14. 14

I'm not sure how you always fail to mention that Skins plays on HBO and The movie network on demand where many people watch it. Also on those channels it's listed as genre: canadian, meaning it's a canadian show. As with many canadian things they are packaged as american things because americans prefer things they believe are american and canadians don't care whether it's canadian or american but if your gonna report on this show, do some research.

  15. 15

Just watch the UK version. I love it and I can't get through one episode of the MTV version. Its sad.

  16. 16

Ugly as fuck cast. That's the problem.

  17. 17

your a fucking moron perez, more then likely its going to get a pick up if its ratings hold at this level and heres why , the last scripted series that mtv launched, the hard times of rj berger had alot lower ratings then skins has even reached, and its been picked up for a second season, do some research next time moron

  18. Low says – reply to this

    18

I watched the first show… that lead guy can't act. I haven't watched again. And It's hard to believe he likes girls.

  19. 19

I keep waiting for something interesting to happen on this show and it falls flat on it's face week after week. Nothing in their story line is different or unusal. It's like been there, done that. Skins writers should take a cue from Showtimes Shameless, that show is a classic.

  20. 20

Whoever mentioned Degrassi I agree. I have watched Skins and I'm bored out of my mind and fast forward the whole thing. Degrassi I think is more realistic- not everyone is a drug addicted depressed teen. They have a nice mix on that show which seemed much more "high school" than Skins. Also where the hell is the plot line on Skins?

  21. 21

they should have taken the idea of the teenagers, characters getting their own episodes etc and applied it to new characters. its too late to salvage anything from it now

  22. 22

Good cancel it!! Child porn should not be rewarded!

  23. 23

this show is fabu, obviously never seen the UK version…..it's of course over the top and ridiculous…but it's a lot closer to the life of a teen than let's say degrassi….no one's getting all up in arms about how it is bustin' on degrassi's shtick….it's a teen shtick…if it's not this show, i'd rather have kids watching this show which faces true issues of teen drug issues, sex and rehabilitation…than say jersey shore and the real world slop we all watch

  24. 24

I am British and have yet to see a British TV show translated successfully to the US. Top Gear is another beyond disastrous attempt. Always, the US misses the subtlety and intelligence of the original, takes the title and attempts to attract the lowest common denominator. FAIL.

  25. 25

I watch the UK version online and love it. I may be just me, bu I can't watch remakes of anything. It's the same with Being Human, Just can't watch the American version.

  26. 26

To quote Dana Carvey's Church Lady: "Skins is a sportcenter for pedophiles." lol, indeed, it is.

  27. 27

why watch a bad remake when you can watch a whole new cast and amazingly written episodes of the REAL Skins, UK

  28. 28

Honestly, I like both the US skins and UK. Okay their alike but both are them are good in my opinion. I think mtv did a whole new skins because the UK one was to much. Honestly if their calling the US skins "over-doing it" have they not seen the Uk one? & people are just afraid to advertise it because its raw. Each character on it has their happy moments and then depressing moments. Just like the UK one, come on in season 4 with effy it was all about Dark moments. Anyway, I like both & I hope they dont stop makin it, & if they do I'll just watch the UK one, its still going on anyway.

  29. 29

Re: alanlovesyew – MTV picked it up to have a more controversial persona. And they didn't really copy anything. Yeah, the main focus of the show is kinda the same, but it was brought here by some of the producers of the UK version, just like "The Office"!

Me being a teenager, I thought the show was pretty good. It's entertaining! If people weren't so uptight these days, it'd still be going strong.

  30. 30

Re: stavrogin – It's not child porn! You don't see anyone naked! Teenagers have sex in the real world and the show points that out. Teenagers get in trouble. This show is truthful.
If you really don't like it, don't watch it. Some people actually really like the show.

  31. 31

I love this show, it's totally relatable to teenagers like me, all of my friends talk about it. Who cares what adults think…

  32. 32

I watch it. I like it.
I'd probably like the UK version more.
But I haven't watched it yet.

  33. 33

    What?! I love this show!

  34. 34

I love this showw ;/ and i have A LOT of friends that watch this show.. they need to fix this show and help it get more viewers! maybe after Jersey Shore again :) hahah

  35. 35

Lesson learnt?? Americans stop trying to redo hit UK shows! Your humour couldn't be any more different and you're way too PC for UK material too. Everyone gets so upset in the USA about the most pathetic things.

  36. 36

I agree i really understood cadie. And i really liked her story so yeah……I seen the US version and i just found it boring but the cadie episode really made it show its light.

  37. 37

Is the show really that bad?, I never saw it but if its that bad then they should cancel shows like Degrassi too. Most of those kids are under age, and they stimulate having sex, doing drugs, getting pregnant and all types of stuff. Why isn't anybody making a big deal about that show. Lots of kids in the US and Canada watch that show, and its been doing that stuff for years. Maybe MTV needs to take a lesson from Teennick.

  38. 38

the uk skins its wayyy better then the american one..

  39. 39

    Re: HaHope
it's classified as an North American series..so it doesn't matter.
The U.S. needs more independent series that relate to the American teenagers here.

  40. 40

I think the main reason transferring this onto US screens hasn't worked, is because right now theres a completely different teenage culture in Britain compared to America. As terrible as it may sound but the drinking, drugs, sex etc is not shocking to anyone in the UK right now because teenagers are far more culturally risqué compared to teenagers in the US, where its simply being used for the "shock" factor.

  41. 41

fuck the UK version. mTV's Skins is insane. everyone i know watches it. hope it gets another season!

  42. 42

Ill tell you where they went wrong. America once again took a great british show and ruined it. Get an original idea USA! To further illustrate my theory let me throw some more american mishaps in there uuummmm Queer As Folk and the Office. Its not just tv shows but movies my best example Death At A Funeral, America couldnt even grasp the concept of what a "Black" comedy is!!!!!

  43. 43

i actually kind of like the show. i see peoples points about the characters being unhappy and even though drugs and sex are an issue with teenagers, the issues on the show are completely over dramatic. MTV is what butchered this show. they should have put it in HBO, or some kind of channel that can actually show the things that mtv is trying to show, but legally cant. MTV has gone to crap and its sad that they are the ones who ruined this show for america.

  44. 44

I think where they went wrong was with the way Skins was meant to be written BY teens FOR teens. Not re-hashed from teens a thousand miles away.

  45. 45

Ugh this show sucks. People who think this show is actually good have definitely not seen the UK version. I tried to give the MTV version a chance, but its horrible!

  46. 46

i fucking love skins! its a great fucking show! these kids are hot! i wish i was a teenager again and so what if they're sickly looking, does everyone have to have an l.a. fucking tan?!! its filmed in canada people! great storyline, i love the fashion, i like how its juvenile and nothing really matches, it freaking works!

  47. 47

mtv, you touch Misfits and I will bring you DOWN.

  48. 48

It's a shame American audiences obviously aren't ready to see a show depicting this style of teenage life. Skins in Britain is in it's 5th season now and still going strong.

  49. 49

doesn't anyone else think its weird that it's mostly adults that are watching this show about teen sex?
    glad its canceled

  50. 50

It looks like shit. Watched a few min HORRRRIBLE

  51. 51

I think the problem is the cast. I feel like if the cast was better actors and that the story lines were just slights more believable it would b a better show.

  52. 52

I think the real problem here is that everyone judging ISNT a teenager.
when was having people portraying a certain age THE SAME AGE a problem
i personaly think its more realistic.
instead of other shows with 20-3o year olds pretending to be 16
    pssssh
i've never seen the UK verison but i would love for a second season of the US version to continue
i think all you old men and women judging need STOP
we are teenagers even without skins on the air we still would be out poppin pill smoking joint drinking LOTS of alcohol and having sex
REMEMBER in america wasnt teen pregnancy an issue before skins came out. !

  53. 53

Re: Clip6493 – WHEN WERE YOU A TEENAGER!? it todays society i am not shocked at little 14 year old girls walking away with a ciggarette in one hand a stroller in the other and a baby on the way
you are being very nieve if you think north american teens arnt drinking doing a SHIT load of drugs and having sex

  54. 54

I think Perez is right, the American version did not do Skins any justice. As I am from England, I am a massive fan of Skins, and it is a good representation of how teenagers behave here, (although sometimes it is a bit far fetched) but to just copy the episodes and have them with American teenagers is ridiculous. They should have either shown the English version in America, or just taken the idea and made it more of a 90210 series! They really just ruined it to be honest, the Americans cannot be as interesting or edgy as the English with this kind of thing
