The Great Gatsby Filming In Australia - And In 3D?!

We're not sure if any of this is true, but if it is, then BLAH!

Sources are reporting that Baz Luhrmann has not only signed a deal to shoot his adaptation of the iconic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby, not only in Sydney, Australia, but also to have it produced in 3D!

Filming will reportedly begin at Sydney's Fox Studios in August, and will take place over the course of 17 weeks, with 30 weeks of post-production.

WTF? All we can ask is - why and WHY?!

For a film with such beloved source material, we would assume that they would want to keep the production as authentic as possible, and film on-location!

Not to mention in 3-effing-D? Seems like such unnecessary spectacle for this kind of production!

We normally love the creativity and the loud, stunning aesthetics that Luhrmann brings to his movies, but we hope that he will also be respectful of the original work and do it justice - without going OVERBOARD and sacrificing the novel's integrity!

What do U think?? Are U looking forward to The Great Gatsby??

    totally agree

This is the most ridiculous idea ever. Oh wait, it is the second most ridiculous idea ever. The first one being the idea to re-do the movie once again. They tried it in the late 90's, early 2000's (can't recall) with Mira Sorvino. Didn't work. The only film representation that does ANY justice to F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel is the Robert Redford, Mia Farrow version. Can't we just leave what works alone? What happened to, "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" I am a high school English teacher. Now all my students are going to have ANOTHER reason not to read and enjoy the written word. They'll just watch the movie, especially since it's "new" and exciting (supposedly) in 3D. Gimme a break. Seriously. It's really a shame.

    Fitzgerald's rolling in his grave

  4. 4

AND it supposed to be staring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby and Tobey McGuire as Nick.

This is the dumbest idea. WHY? This book is amazing. A classic. It doesn't need any gimmicks! I hope it's just a rumor.

ok agree 3d is a bit silly but i think you'll find that the original film wasnt shot on location… and sydney is renowned for being one of the best citys to film in so why not…. its a shit load cheaper then filming in the states

Yeah, because shooting "Cold Mountain," about the AMERICAN Civil War, used Romania as a stand-in for the U.S., and starred a cast of Australian and British actors donning American accents. Yup, that movie looked and felt so-o authentic. NOT.

"We normally love the creativity and the loud, stunning aesthetics that Luhrmann brings to his movies," ie. he knows what hes doing.

  9. 9

the great gatsby is a classic, why ruin it with another movie. wasn't the last one bad enough?

NO 3D sucks! ive become so anti-3d with all the 3d movies out there!!

  11. 11

Carrie Mulligan is no Daisy. Horrible casting

  12. 12

Re: Erica5 – I disagree, I think Mulligan will make a fantastic Daisy. I will NOT watch the stupid 3D version, though. Damn you, James Cameron!

Luhrmann is one of the worst directors ever. Did you see Australia? Don't expect much, 3-D or not.

  14. 14

For someone who lives in the area where the Great Gatsby actually takes place, I am highly insulted.

I was never satisfied with Robert Redford's Jay Gatsby, although a few other performances (Karen Black, Mia Farrow) were pretty much spot on. I just couldn't reconcile the Redford movie with the book, so yeah, I'm looking forward to another translation of the novel.

3D - in Australia?? That is the stupidest thing I ever heard. How hard is it to film it on Long Island where the book is set? There are so many great places on Long Island's gold coast that are still there and accessible for filming. One is a very popular museum that I have seen in a bunch of movies. There is another museum, a catering hall, colleges, etc. that all would jump at the chance to have a movie filmed there, and it would be authentic.

    Re: Human Sushi Platter

Good to see someone else mention Karen Black's strong performance in the Redford/Farrow version.

  18. 18

I was looking forward to this movie but now I don”t care because I don't like that stupid Mulligan woman is in the movie and she is totally irritating.

  19. 19

I wasn't thrilled with the Redford version, so I'm not opposed to them creating another adaptation. But seriously 3D? Why exactly would a movie like this have to be shot in 3D? Is the movie taking a new direction with the book and making it more modern? I really really hope not. The book is genius and does not need to be tampered with.

  20. 20

sounds like a (very stupid) rumour

  21. 21

changing the location is the worst idea ever.

  22. 22

Refuse to see any movie in 3D anymore — novelty has worn off — waste of money

  23. 23

Why ruin such a great book again! 3D come on , they need to rethink the audience they are focusing on. Most of us are in our late 20's 30's etc who appreciate this book. Its no JBieber movie ! FFFUUU
