Martin Sheen On Coping With Charlie

Martin Sheen Praying For Charlie

We really do feel for Charlie Sheen's family.

Matin Sheen, his dad, has been talking a bit about how it has been affecting those who love Charlie, and what they're trying to do about it.

He says:

"He's doing well. We pray for him. If he had cancer, how would you treat him? This disease of addiction is a form of cancer. You have to have an equal measure of concern and love and lift him up."

That's definitely a good start, but how about sitting down with and actually convincing Charlie to do a recommended amount of time in rehab to see if he can't kick his issues for good??

Praying is great, but you can be proactive while you pray too!

Let's do whatever we can to get that man better, and give him the triumphant return he needs!

Addiction is not a disease and you can't compare it to cancer. Sheen CHOOSES to take drugs. No-one chooses to get cancer. And I hate self-righteous pricks who say they're "praying for him/her", when what they really mean is "I can't be fucked to do anything about it."

Sorry, I don't buy into the whole 'addiction is a disease' thing. It may be really, really hard, but if a person wants to change, they will. There are a lot of addicts out there who have quit. Saying it is a disease takes away the person's responsibility for their own actions. They just play the 'I have a disease, its not my fault' card. The only addicts who are successful in recovery are the ones who take responsibility for their own actions.

If I remember correctly, his family has staged numerous interventions and assorted acts of desperation to get Charlie help throughout his looooong history of self-destruction. There comes a point when family members and loved ones have to step back and let the addict hit rock bottom. Charlie is 100% responsible for his actions and for getting help with his disease; no amount of intervention, prayer, whatever from friends and family will change him or make him better. He's got to do that for himself.

I love Martin Sheen. But if I were him, I'd take care of Charlie the mainland Samoan way. In otehr kick his ass back to the bush overseas, make him farm his ass off for 16 hours a day barefoot, and then go back to his three walled hut and get some sleep. He'll be too damn tired for hookers and booze and drugs. Seriously, he needs tough love with a big kick in the ass more than anything.

LMAO! Preachy Perez. Get a grip! You take stories found on other sites then add your own absurd "insight" and what?? It's original? NOT!

Really?! u think he hasnt sat down and begged his son to get help, over and over and over again??? Charlie hasnt had the consequences necessary to make him want / need help. he has to be desperate for help and surrender to the DISEASE of addiction. im an addict and wanted/needed help for a long time but fear/shame/guilt/depression can is consuming. Alcoholics has a disease of the mind and body…our bodies process alcohol differently than a Normal person. Our minds & bodies crave it and obsess over it.

Martin Sheen is an enabler. If he cut his son off and refused to participate in the train wreck that is Charlie Sheen's life, Charlie might begin to get the message. Charlie's family needs to go to Alanon and educate themselves about addiction.

Um yeah because obviously that's so easy to do ..Let me try it ..Charlie I really think you should go to rehab now …Youre right that was so easy

I think Martin and Emilio have tried and tried and tried till they're bleeding in the eyes with Charlie. All they can do now is pray.

You ignorant ass. Martin Sheen has made numerous attempts to save his son, once begging a judge to lock him up. Just because you're uninformed, doesn't mean the family hasn't tried to do anything. At some point you have to accept that grown men are going to do what they're going to do; and grown men with Charlie Sheen's money really don't "need" anyone's support.

If he had cancer, how would you treat him?>>>>

“Alcoholism is a disease, but it's the only one you can get yelled at for having. Goddamn it Otto, you are an alcoholic. Goddamn it Otto, you have Lupis… one of those two doesn't sound right.”

    Mitch Hedberg

Never met anyone who chose to take a great big hit of CANCER. Addiction is not a disease. Its a choice. Saying you have a disease when you're an addict is just another in a long line of excuses. Everytime I have to hear someone say "I have a disease" I am never sure wether i wanna smack em or laugh at em. My Grandmother had cancer. My ex husband is a addict. One of them made a choice and it wasnt grandma.

at least his Dad is reaching out to him…he's a great man and a great actor..unfortunately this is real to him…as a parent you can only do so much, then it's up to the individual to make a change to the positive…God Bless him for reaching out to his son…and praying is the Best Answer!!!

I love Martin Sheen but you can't really equate it to cancer. If someone was able to walk away from cancer the way you could potentially walk away from drugs and prostitutes the cancer patient most certainly would! Not that it's easy to give up addiction but don't equate it to cancer. Plus drugs and prostitutes are fun I would imagine, there is nothing fun about cancer.

Well good luck to him anyway.

Sad! The recent pics of Mr.Sheen are just so terrible. He looks so cracked out.. The guy needs serious help!

How about you do some research before commenting on something. Before stating what you perceive to be a fact, check to make sure your 'facts' are right before putting it out for the world to see. The family DID do an intervention on Charlie - the whole family - before he was married and he did go to rehab. But an addict goes in and out of addiction. They can't even begin to heal until THEY are ready. His family can tell him till their blue in the face that they want him to get help and it will be useless because he has to be ready. So don't put this on his family.

Re: Kim Asatourian – Hahahahaha only Mitch Hedberg could make sense of this argument!

  20. 20

I find that a bit of a slap in the face to those who have been affected by cancer, like Sheen's former Wall Street co-star, the great Michael Douglas. THAT MAN is fighting a disease. Charlie Sheen is just a self indulgent piece of crap and the law needs to stop taking it so easy on him. If anyone commenting on this site were to have his criminal record, they'd lock us up and throw away the key….but then again, we're not celebrities.

  21. 21

JERK OFF! You don't normally have a CHOICE to get cancer, But you DO have a choice in picking up the CRACK PIPE!

Learn the difference Marty between an ILLNESS and a WEAKNESS!

    They're NOT the same.

  22. 22

To be honest, his comparison of addiction to cancer is offensive to me. My mother died of cancer. She fought long and hard to stay alive. She was able to see both of her children marry and four of her five grandchildren born. Charlie Sheen has no desire to do anything to help himself for his own sake, the sake of his children, or the sake of the rest of his family. He cannot be compared to my mother in even the loosest of ways.

  23. 23

Charlie being Charlie, leave him alone.

  24. 24

my mother has just been told that her cancer has returned for the 3rd time at the age of 46. she doesn't drink, smoke or take drugs. thank you, martin sheen for comparing my mother to the waste of oxygen you call a son, you absolute fucking idiot.

  25. 25

Re: amycakes86 – Sorry to hear about your mother.Stupid and insensitive statement from Martin. What an ass.

  26. 26

um, one of the symptoms of cancer isn't usually an orgy on a tropical island, just sayin'

  27. 27

As the mother of an addict, you can only reach out so many times and receive "drug rejection" before you have to leave everything in gods hands. Addiction not only kills addicts but also families of addicts. Families need to learn how to take care of themselves in order to help their addict children.

  28. 28

Re: TORTEZ – I would love to know some of the stuff you know. It's ashame you don't go into more detail.

  29. 29

Comparing an addiction to cancer is irresponsible and, more importantly, completely offensive. Cancer patents can't go to therapy and will their addiction away.

  30. 30

    *will their disease away.

  31. 31

Grrrrr…..that is SO insensitive perez, As if, that poor guy Having to promote and support his other sons film and has to trawl the media and get asked invasive questions about his sick son isn't bad enough, he is no doubt worried sick about Charlie- and not only do you not even mention the film, but you harp on about how he should do something, AS IF he hasn't reached out, got mad, insisted his son seek treatment!!! There is nothing he can do! He can't MAKE him go seek treatment, he already did years ago and sheen laughed about it on the actors studio, I mean the poor guy is trying to make light of it, so he doesn't show the media his REAL pain and empathise with MANY MANY other families in the same position as his family- who knows whats going on behind the scenes. You fawn over paris Bloody hilton and never knock her air head or Jen anniston since she called you out- Quit picking on a Guy trying to keep it together and probably doing everything he can for his son…..along with praying!! And AT LEAST plug his film with Emilio if you're going to also mindlessly speculate!!

you cant help someone WHO DOSE NOT WANT IT !!! If the family was smart at this point they should all wash their hands of him at 40++ years of age it is time Charlie owned his bullshit !!! Until he chooses of his own accord to make some needed changes in his behavior the family is just lining up for disappointment and anguish.
