Jeffrey Tambor Pulls Out Of La Cage Aux Folles After Struggling With Role

| Filed under: Broadway BabiesKelsey Grammer

Kelsey Grammer's replacement in the Broadway show La Cage aux Folles, Jeffrey Tambor, has pulled out of the show due to complications from a recent hip surgery.

However, there's more to it as reports have come out that Tambor struggled to keep up with the high musical notes that is required of his character. Sources say that he lacked the sophistication and confidence that Kelsey brought to the role and even lashed out at producers, saying, "You don't have faith in me!"

The source also added that he was "freaking out."

Even after hiring a high-priced vocal coach and flying in director Terry Johnson to work with him, backstage insiders say that Tambor still lacked the confidence to continue playing the role of Georges on stage.

On Friday, Tambor pulled out of the show, which had producers giving a statement that said, "the pain and challenge of performing in a musical eight times a week proved to be too physically demanding" for Tambor.

Chris Hoch will fill in for the mean time.

Sad. But, La Cage aux Folles is a demanding show so we can see why he felt the need to pull out.

Who do U think will be a good replacement??

Translation: Mr. Tambor is too straight for this role , whereas playing a flamer was right up Mr. Grammer's down low alley.

  2. 2

    Al Pacino

this shouldn't be funny….but it is.

Tambor is a brilliant actor. You have to be a big Ole Queen to fill that roll.

  5. 5

    John Lithgow. Just saying.

  6. 6

thank God he pulled out. He was TERRIBLE!

  7. 7

He's a one dimensional actor. Best suited for 30 minute sitcoms that never are renewed after the first season.

He was atrocious! The rest of the cast was embarrassed for him. His "pulling out" sure reeks of spin. Sounds more an agreed to spin to cover up what would have normally been called he was fired!
BTW…It's also interesting that Daniel Davis was fired from the SAME ROLE in the La Cage revival just a few years ago. Back then they admitted he was fired for all his histrionics.

Gene Barry originated the role in the musical back in the 80s, and he didn't have an incredible voice — he had swagger and confidence in the role, though. Not sure why Tambor finds it so difficult.

    charlie sheen?

Kelsey Grammer, we aren't counting the days, but the hours this marriage will last. Sadly enough, the damage has been done to your children. When do you play a father? You couldn't even play a father in your last sitcom. You failed at fatherhood on TV as well as real life. Pitiful.
