Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark Director Julie Taymor Speaks!

After a long, difficult, and DANGEROUS road, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark director Julie Taymor has opened up about her cursed Broadway show.

Here's what she had to say about it:

“Anyone who creates knows — when it’s not quite there. Where it hasn’t quite become the phoenix or the burnt char. And I am right there.”

“I am on the precipice looking down into a dead volcano on my left, on the right it is sheer shale. I am in thongs and sarong and no hiking boots. I realize I can’t go back the way I have come. I can’t. So I throw away my camera. I throw away thongs and I look at the line straight in front of me. And I got down on all fours like a cat. And I held with my knees to either side of this line in front of me — 30 yards or 30 feet, I don’t know. The wind was massively blowing and the only way I could get to the either side was to look at the line straight in front of me."

“I know you have been there. I am in the crucible right now. It is my trial by fire. It’s my company’s trial by fire.”

More from Taymor:

“It’s right there in the palm of my hands. In all of my company’s hands. I have beautiful collaborators. We as collaborators only get there all together. I know you understand that. You stay there going forward and you see this extraordinary thing right in front of your eyes.”

All very poetic, Julie. We'd expect nothing less from the woman who brought us Across the Universe.

Guess we'll see how things end up for Ms. Taymor and her company's "trial by fire."

Our main concern is the safety of the cast and crew. As long as nobody else gets injured, we wish Julie and her collaborators all the best…although we must admit, we've pretty much lost any optimism we might have had for this show by this point.

How DRAMATIC! Hope this show gets pulled off. We need more financial backers to take risks on Broadway.

I actually saw the show and seriously the thing does not belong on Broadway. Yes, the setting was super gorgeous, the songs were great but the story, how they created it, SUCKED! It's just much to complicated for a Broadway stage, it needs like a stadium to be done correctly.

Re: Gladys Alanna Lopez – Songs were great? They were muff cabbage… gaabage. The set was OK but nothing super special. There were NO redeeming qualities in the show I saw yesterday. The LED wall looked kinda cool I guess, but did not make up for everything else sucking ass. The biggest let down, as I knew the show sucked in most regards from what I'd read, was the flying. Spiderman looked like he was floating and being pulled around… it didn't look Spideylike at all. They justify the whole cost of the show with the complex rigging setup and then they use it like assholes. I honestly felt bad for the actors, they looked like they were trying :(
