The View On Praying The Gay Away

| Filed under: TV NewsGay Gay GayBarbara WaltersLGBT

The OWN Network is going to get a lot of viewers tonight.

This morning, Lisa Ling returned to The View roundtable to discuss her new show premiering tonight on Oprah's new network called America with Lisa Ling.

Each week, the show will tackle a national human interest issue and present the opposing arguments about it. This first episode is titled, Pray The Gay Away?

This is VERY interesting. Take the time to watch this video (above) and hear what the ladies have to say on the issue.

Personally, we agree with Barbara when she says it must be a terribly frustrating life choice to make, denying who you are to the world and to yourself. It really makes us sad to think there are those who fight each and every single day to push away feelings that they really shouldn't, just because someone is telling them they are wrong.

DO YOUR RESEARCH IDIOT! This is the 4th episode NOT the first

  2. 2

it is actually the third episode

  3. 3

    4th one!
    There was:
    -Faith Healing
    -Transgender Lives
    -State of Sex Offenders
    -Pray the Gay Away?

  4. 4

def not the first episode jackasses…but it was awesome :)

  5. 5

I saw this interview and actually listened to everything Lisa Ling had to say about this topic (since it IS her show, not Barbara Walters') and apparently you need to do the same before you begin bashing the views you believe it portrays. (And let's not forget her concern of the "opposing community" also pressuring the young gay teens at the camp.)

  6. 6

It is not the first episode. Get your information right!

  7. 7

Would it be that hard to pray the gay away?

I mean, you make a conscious choice to be gay, so you can easily reverse it

  8. 8

I think what people need to do is separate being gay, with what they believe is "the gay lifestyle". This "gay lifestyle" in truth is life style of teen slash drug addicts, extremely sexual people, etc but it gets dubbed the gay lifestyle when i reality is the style of all these weird people. I get pissed of that people think just bcuz im bi im having sex with everybody, doing every drug on the planet, being in nighclubs 24/7 and partying like there is no tomorrow. thats just not true. but im proud that that kid is no longer bieng a ho

Re: icefire227 – Prove it. And please don't provide that bull**** argument that 'everything one does in life is a choice.' Did you choose to be attracted to women?

  12. 12

Re: zooby – If it wasn't a choice, then it would have to be genetic.

And since the gays can't reproduce, they can't pass down their homosexuality.

  13. 13

Re: zooby – Zooby if this was 1900 and Hetereosexual people lived in one part and Homosexual people lived in another part . The Homosexual people would all die . Why ??? cause it's just not meant to be . Guys aren't meant to stick dicks in each others assholes . My asshole is pooping only.

    Re: icefire227

On top of that, anyone who believes that the gay community is an orgy of sex, drugs and other issues, let me ask you this. What community isn't?

As a college student, I see people every single day who engage in dangerous activities involving alcohol, drugs and sex. How is the gay community unique in this? Pre-teens, teens, adults, elders, gays, straights, bis, black, white, asian… ALL of these "groups" engage in dangerous activities and this is a reflection on human nature, NOT on sexuality or race.

Go educate yourself, stow away the ignorance, the hatred and bigotry. The world would be a much better place if we just let everyone make their own damn choices, and stopped pretending that whether or not a gay person is gay or not really affects our days.

  15. 15

I haven't seen this show, but I think praying away is misleading. It's a healing process getting to the root cause of the homosexual feelings. I have been friends with friends with the President of Exodus International for over 20 years now. Change is possible if you want it. You shouldn't bash or bully those who choose to go that route.

  16. 16

    Re: icefire227
That is the weakest argument I've ever heard…

Just because you're gay doesn't mean your offspring necessarily will be! If it is genetic, who's to say that it isn't just a genetic abnormality that isn't present in everyone? What if it has something to do with how much estrogen or testosterone the mother is producing during the time of pregnancy? There are a million ways it could be genetic. Just because it's genetic doesn't mean it always passes down each time.

Again, your ignorance shows. Gay couples do have children. They can have their genes pass down. It just doesn't mean that both of their genes are present.

  17. 17

That Christian guy broke my heart. He was so hurting and trying to hard to "pray his gay away" and he just couldn't do it. So sad…

  18. 18

REPRESENT! OUT LOUD AND PROUD!!! Honestly if people in these ridiculous "pray away the gay" groups even say you can't turn off being gay it should be pretty freaking apparent that being gay is NOT a choice, it's just who you are! And it shouldn't define a person either! Hopefully, we'll get to the day when being straight, gay, bi, etc, is just a piece of who you are - like your hair color, or skin color - it doesn't matter! It's just how you're born, and you're beautiful in any package you come in!!!! AND any color, shape, orientation, etc you are - God, as creator, loves all his children!! The hate and condemnation thrown from the church to LGBTQ people is probably the LEAST Christian thing they can do! Isn't peace and tolerance the whole point of Christianity, and trying to get people to deny their identities is just wrong.

  19. 19

Re: icefire227 – icefire steril people OBVIOUSLY cant reproduce and they still exist

  20. 20

Re: icefire227 – If it's a choice, could you choose to be gay?

  21. 21

It ***IS*** a choice. As a gay male, I can confirm this. Nobody EVER forces me to engage in a sexual or emotional relationship with another man. That is a decision I make on my own for myself each and every single time I CHOOSE to exercise my homosexual lifestyle. I'm not saying it's right or wrong (we all view this from a different angle), but it ***IS*** a choice.

  22. 22

[Re: icefire227 – 12 I am third generation gay and would not be surprised if homosexuality presents in the generation of my neices. Homosexuality is an age old facet of the human condition.

Re: Andy27 – Can you explain why you make the choice to be gay?

  23. 23

the bible says its wrong. So the person who is telling them is God.

  24. 24

    Re: Andy27 – Thank you.

  25. 25

this is a tiny bit off topic, but i think people are approaching the subject of homosexuality the wrong way. perez, and others, want universal condonement for their lifestyle and not only does that infringe on MY right to believe what i want and practice whatever religion i want (and let's be clear, i'm christian, but mine is not the only religion that says gay is wrong and certain other religions have harsh punishments. mine says if you don't seek forgiveness you're going to hell, but if you don't believe in hell why should you care?!). i support equal RIGHTS under the LAW unconditionally for all persons. but i don't think it's right to try to force others to agree that gay is ok when it goes against their beliefs. equal rights does not mean advantage, universal agreement, or taking away others' rights. it seems like perez wants the government to force all people to accept his lifestyle and that is hardly equal or constitutional.

It's a choice to act upon your urges -yes, but it's not a choice when it comes to who you're attracted to. Pretending to lead a straight life when you're actually gay can do a lot of damage to your mental well-being. This is fact.

  27. Fia says – reply to this

My Dad tried for years to live as a heterosexual male, but ultimately my parents divorced before I was 1. He passed away in 1989 due to an AIDS related illness at a time when Reagan was touting AIDS as a punishment to gay individuals. Growing up through this was hard for me, and I was raised in a Christian home.
While the bible does say that homosexuality is wrong, Jesus came to extend love and acceptance to ALL. My Dad is in heaven, he loved Christ and Christ loves him. I just wish he was still alive to see how acceptance is growing. I would have wanted him to be himself, I still love him very much. I wouldn't have wanted him to lie about his life just for my sake.

  28. 28

the bible says women shouldn't wear pearls or braid their hair. so why isn't there a national campaign against women who do so? people pick and choose what they want to follow in the bible.

  29. 29

Re: hcoboy – Thank you. Saying being gay is a choice is like saying being autistic is a choice! Just plain stupid!!

  30. 30

Re: icefire227 – Where's your proof? If you can't present facts, then you need to STFU. You were clearly born stupid; was that YOUR choice?

  31. 31

Re: Fia – I'm very sorry to hear about your dad!

  32. 32

Re: icefire227 – Of course gays can reproduce, just ask Elton John! and all those guys on the down low. Don't forget thanks to the "Pray the Gay Away" movement a lot more "gay genes" will be getting passed down!

  33. 33

Lev. 20:13, "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death." The bible makes this the most simple of decisions: anyone who is gay and is also a Christian, Jew or Muslim is certainly an abject self-loathing idiot!

  34. 34

Anyone who is a Christian, should know that homosexuality is a stronghold, just like hate, rage, bitterness, unforgiveness, lust, addiction, etc. Homosexuals need DELIVERANCE the same way one needs deliverance from being a slanderer or thief. So in effect, homosexuality must be "cast out" of a person by an anointed Man of God, or deliverance minister.

  35. 35

I am an openly gay male and I believe it is not a choice. I did not wake up one day and say to myself I am going to be gay. I can not help that I am sexually attracted to men and not women. I have no emotional connection to women, it just does not feel right to me. I can not help that I do not want to be with a women in a emotional way.

  36. 36

homophobia makes me sick, how can people possibly think being gay is a "choice" or "lifestyle." It's neither. It's a form of sexuality, something you're born with and can't change. At the end of the day, we're all the same, we eat, pee, poo, walk on two feet, we're human. Who really cares if a man is attracted to a man or a man to a woman? It's actually amazing how just because someone is attracted to someone who have the same genitals as them, causes so much hate. There are actually SO many close minded individuals in this world

  37. 37

The story of Christian sickens me!!! He's living a lie and I hope one day, sooner rather than later, that he realizes this.

  38. 38

Re: AynRandy – OMG YES THANK YOU!!! I can't believe the number of people on here that are so defensive of whether or not being gay is a choice or not. Why does it matter either way? My aunt kept her sexuality secret until she was 44! She's always had live-in relationships with women and it was the worst kept secret in history. But once she came out, it made no difference to us, and she now lives her life with freedom knowing that we love her regardless of her sexual orientation. You can't choose who you fall in love with.
BTW to anyone saying that being gay is a choice - do you really think gays would choose a life that is so unfair? Why would anybody WANT to be treated the way gays are treated in this society???

  39. 39

    Re: matusadona

You and a number of other people who have posted on this topic are stupid fucking cun*ts.

  40. 40

Re: Fancyhippy – Exactly. The Bible also condemns anyone who support violence (ie video games) yet people still do that. Personally I don't think it is possible for a person to completely live 100% according to what the Bible says

  41. 41

I love Lisa Ling. We just starting getting OWN here in Canada but I haven't found what time her show is on up here.

Re: icefire227 – Icefire… How do you explain a mother and a father who do not have down syndrome giving birth to someone who does?

I am a straight female. I prefer larger more muscular men. Two of my best friends prefer skinnier leaner men. I can not explain to you why we find these two different types attractive, but I can tell you that I do not feel as though I have a choice in the matter. It is just something that chemically clicks with me and not for them.

  43. 43

You mean the way you tell everyone who doesn't agree with you that they're wrong Perez? Yeah, it must suck indeed.

  44. 44

Re: jenb2003 – Thanks for going off topic. You raise a significant point when you say '…or taking away others' rights.' The right for gay Californian's to enter into the contract of marriage WAS TAKEN AWAY by Prop8. There are legally married gay folks in California and there are those who what to marry and are forbidden. You see how that is unequal?
By allowing gay folks to get married not one governmental right for straight folks changes. It may change how you view government but not how you view your god. No one is demanding for certain churches to change their view on homosex; there are churches which accept and welcome gay folks unconditionally.
Gay folks do not (nor would you I suppose) want to go to city hall to ask for a license to pray; gay folks want to be able to go to city hall to get a marriage license. Having a government that insists its laws must be in accordance to theology does create inequality in the application of rights, plain and simple. Overstating the position, for example saying gay folks want 'universal condonement [sic],' is a misrepresentation of the situation at hand.

  45. 45

I am a born again believer. I consider myself to be an evangelical Christian….A sin is a sin….Is homosexuality more of a sin than a little white lie? It's not for us to decide, God will place judgement on all of us…We need to love one another regardless of what the world tries to convince us! Jesus loves us all…that's why he died on the cross.

Re: Andy27 – that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard. your confusing the fact that u are choosing to have sex whether it be with a man or a woman with the fact that when choosing to have sex (for you) then it is with a man . it is with a man because u are gay, which in itself is NOT something you choose. your 1st initial feeling when wanting to have sex is to be with a man.
