College Scholarship Created In Honor Of Tyler Clementi.

Wow. It's nice to see that something positive could come out of such a heartbreaking, sad and unnecessary loss of life.

The Point Foundation has reportedly created a college scholarship in memory of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi, who tragically took his own life last year after he was secretly filmed by his roommate being intimate with another man.

According to the press release:

“The Tyler Clementi Point Scholarship was created with the cooperation of Clementi’s parents, Joe and Jane, to honor his memory and further the efforts to end the bullying that many LGBT youth face within educational environments. The organization has set aside funds for the scholarship, while allowing the public and current Point supporters to donate in Clementi’s name online at www.pointfoundation.org or by calling 866-33-POINT (76468).”

Clementi's parents add:

"Our son Tyler was a kind and gentle young man who enjoyed helping people. This scholarship will help college students and it will raise awareness of young people who are subject to abuse through malicious bullying — and so it will help people in Tyler's memory. We are happy to be supportive of Point Foundation and we thank them for establishing this scholarship.”

The scholarship will cover tuition, room and board, school supplies, and will be awarded to LGBT students.

Hopefully this can bring the help, guidance, and resources to other young people that Tyler unfortunately didn't have, as well as keep his memory alive and honored.

Our thoughts go out to his family and loved ones during what we're sure is still a very difficult time.

Re: antheajk – It wasn't after he was "outted". He committed suicide because he was publicly humiliated. It goes the same for everyone, no matter what sexual orientation. To be publicly humiliated and having your privacy invaded like that leaves you vulnerable and mentally unstable.

As for Tyler being "a sexual pervert and a creep", isn't that what the two students who invaded his privacy by filming him are. I was a grade above Tyler in both high school and at Rutgers. Unfortunately I never got the chance to get to know him personally but he was always a shy, kind and musically talented guy. I'm glad a scholarship is being made in his name. People should really learn tolerance and acceptance.l…

Tyler Clementi was a great kid.. my family knew his family well. I hope this scholarship can help others in the future.
