Steven Soderbergh To Retire From Filmmaking

| Filed under: Film FlickersGeorge ClooneyMichael Douglas

Say it ain't so!

Director Steven Soderbergh says he's quitting filmmaking.

After he finishes his next two movies, Liberace, starring Michael Douglas, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. starring George Clooney, Soderbergh says he will be moving on.

When asked why he wants to leave films behind, Soderbergh responded:

"It's just time. When you reach the point where you're like if I have to get into a van to do another scout I'm just going to shoot myself, it's time to let somebody else who's still excited about getting in the van, get in the van.

For the last three years I've been turning down everything that comes my way. You're not gonna have Steven Soderbergh to kick around anymore."

Wow, sounds like some bitter grapes. The guy has made many popular films including the Ocean's Eleven series and Erin Brockovich so we hate to see him go…but it seems like he just doesn't have the passion for it anymore.

Oh well. Let's hope he changes his mind.

Fantastic. His movies really suck. He must be a really nice likable guy to get all these stars to sign up for his horrible movies every time.

this was from an interview he did on stage in Omaha last month..this was one question of an hour conversation..and his comment about 'you're not going to have steven soderbergh to kick around anymore' was said in a totally joking manner and met with laughter..it's not any kind of 'sour grapes' or however you describe it..he's made 30 films in 25 years..won the oscar and is rich..he should do whatever he wants.

That's too bad… he's an exceptional talent. However, it's hard to listen to someone bitch about how hard it is to "get in the van" when we know how much money he's making doing films for a living. Really? It's too hard on you to drive around and scout film sites? Why don't you try getting up everyday at 5AM to get your kids ready for school and then get yourself in the mind set to work for 10-12 hours so you can be sure to pay the bills…. really - let's get some perspective.

They are still talking about it? Months ago this was in the media. *yawn*

He's just depressed and having a crisis. Stressed out re: his relationship and baby to another woman in Oz. He'll be fine in 5 years. He's just reassessing and needs a break.

I know how he feels. He has a great face.

I'm sick of hearing about the 'retirement' of these people. They do it for attention so that the next piece they do gets lots of play and lots of viewers. Just like Phil Collins planning to retire, and Jayz, and Joaquin Phoenix, and Billy Joel, and Garth Brooks, and bla bla bla. They say it to get the attention. I guess they feel they can't get the attention strictly with their talent anymore, so they revert to stunts. Sorta sad, really.

This announcement is a few months old! But people in the entertainment biz do not really retire. They take some time off and when they get bored they do another project.

Translation: I don't wanna earn right now, because wife, Jules Asner, might sue my philandering ass for divorce now that my Australian baby momma has stepped forward.

He hit his pinnacle early one with Sex, Lies, and Videotape. I won't miss seeing his schlock being advertised.

Re: caroaber – Ha. Maybe that, plus the situation could suck the life out of anyone enough to pass on doing a movie at that time.
