Ruh-roh.

Street artist Thierry Guetta, otherwise known as Mr. Brainwash, is being sued by photographer, Glen Friedman, for copyright infringement.

Friedman says that Mr. Brainwash improperly used his photograph of Run DMC, taken in Queens, NY in 1985, and is seeking unspecified damages.

Mr. Brainwash, whose work can be seen in the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop along with the works of fellow street artist, Banksy, is being accused of using the photograph in several of his artwork without paying any licensing fees.

Friedman's attorney, Douglas Linde, has even gone so far as calling Mr. Brainwash a "blatant plagiarist."

Yikes.

A trial date is set for later this year.

This is a tough one. The artwork is mostly stencil - an actual photograph is not used in the art - but it looks like it still violates infringement laws.

Bummer.

what an a$$hole - can the guy just appreciate the other artist paying homage his work?

Perez, you obviously know nothing about art,photography,Photoshop..'Stencil'
You are aware that MANY artists project photos onto paper and draw/paint on them correct ? Or,using a filter or process in Photoshop can easily create this effect in 32 seconds ?
Copying or publishing a photo or piece of art is copyright infringement regardless of anyone profiting. Like if you took a photo off a photo agency site without paying,or stole a photo from another blog, you'd be guilty of willful infringment. If the photo is registered with the US copyright office, the creator could sue you for up to $150,000 per use.
Been there done that,it's a great living for someone in the arts!

You can't just take someone else's work and cash in on it. Did he think no one would notice? Note to young entrepreneurs; strike a deal with the owner and they might be up for both of you to profit on your creativity.

So, you don´t think that mr Brainwash is Banksy?

Re: BetsyRoss – It's funny that you had to spell this out to Perez Hilton who's been sued left and right for copyright infringement with the images he uses. He's siding with himself here.

  8. 8

Can they sue someone who doesn't actually exist? If you think Exit Through the Gift shop is real then you got played.

  9. 9

    ITT: morons

nice to know glen is in on the joke

  10. 10

I agree, I saw the documentary and that's all the guy did - STEAL other people's art and splash some paint on it and resell it for $$$ - what a loser (and the movie sucked!)

  11. 11

That's pretty lame in my book…I see this as an homage to an iconic photo taken back when. Whatever happened to "thanks man". Now the substitute is sue. F——douche.

  12. 12

And it's not like the guy is profiting off of it…it's in a public place. This guy needs to chill the f out.

  13. 13

you'd think the asshole would be happy that someone even remembered his photo, never mind that they turned it into art.

  14. 14

so tired of these overrated vandals

  15. 15

whats so hard about making a stencil? these guys are "artists"? pop culture is such garbage nowadays and Americans are the only ones on this planet that still worship celebrities.

Guetta isnt a real artist, anyone with half a brain knows this and the people who are paying high dollar for his crap obviously dont know what art is. Guetta duped alot of people its about time something came back on him.

Mr. Brainwash is a hack and pays other people to execute his ideas. He himself is no artist. Copyright infringement is copyright infringement no matter how you look at it. People have no clue.
