Dear Target, THIS SUCKS!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooGay Gay GayBusiness BlitzLGBT

You continue to disappoint us at every turn. For shame!

This week, justice was in the favor of equality when Target attorney's tried to ban a marriage equality group from petitioning for signatures outside their San Diego store. According to sources, Judge Jeffrey B. Barton insisted that the group's right of free speech trumps Target's misguided business agendas and therefore denied their request to remove the activists from their store grounds pending a formal trial.

Shut down! We totally understand a "no-solicitation policy," but these people are trying to make a difference. They are trying to change the future. They are trying to do some good.

Stop trying to get in the way of that! Equality for all!

Go Target!!! BTW, when did Target become celebrity news?

  2. 2

I worked at Target. They don't let anyone solicit in front of their stores. They can't make an exception for one group else they'd have to do it for everyone. I'm sure other groups that would "make a difference and change the world" would like to solicit at Target, but it is their policy. Stop making this seem like a homophobic issue. It isn't. Target doesn't even allow girl scouts to sell cookies in front of their store, they certainly aren't going to allow groups that are asking to sign petitions.

  3. 3

That is BS Perez. If they have a no-solicitation policy it shouldn't be broken for favortism for any cause whether you think it is for the best or not. I am sure many religious right would say the same for the ban on marriage equality.

  4. 4

"We totally understand their policy….. BUT"? No buts. Gosh, Perez. :(

  5. 5

Yeah, you're freakin' stupid. You can't say "We understand the no solicitation policy," and then but this group is trying to make a difference. Most groups are. No solicitation, plain and simple, that's um, actually, equality for all. They can't just bend rules for some, and not for others. No one wants to be hounded like that while going shopping. You need to learn to fight for actual equality, and quit being a hypocrite when it's someone/thing you like.

  6. 6

Seriously I am glad they tried to do something bc when I go shopping or want to run in a store I do not want to see a bunch of freaking protestors and I could care less what they are protesting about bc I have plans a such things to do and they will be in my way. I am sure there are plenty of other places they can go snd do the protesting.

  7. 7

freedom goes both ways buddy.just in case your wondering, yes i think gays should be able to get married.

  8. 8

Perez, you are such a whiner and a bully. Target is a business, not a political stage. The best thing they can do is stay neutral. They employ a lot of Americans and you are trying to hurt their business. Shame on you.

  9. 9

If they let this group petition outside the store, then every group under the sun will start doing it. You can't pick and choose. It's all or nothing.

  10. 10

Perez I actually have to disagree with you on this one. I am 100% for equal rights and same sex marriage, but if I saw a large group petitioning outside of a Target I would divert my shopping plan. I hate to be bothered like that (including being bombarded to purchase girl scout cookies or homeless newspapers) and I think that they were correct in protecting the rights of their customers by asking them to move off of the property.

  11. 11

it's still solicitation, so target had every right to kick them off no matter what they were fighting for

  12. 12

They didn't deny them simply because of what group it was. They don't allow ANY group to collect signatures in front of their store. I don't want someone hassling me to sign something when I'm simply trying to do my shopping - whether or not I support their cause. I support marriage equality, but the fact you're trying to speak out against Target for THIS is sad.

  13. 13

OK, first, try to remember that just because you're behind something doesn't mean it's universally embraced, and that maybe you shouldn't act like it's something that everyone so obviously wants.*

Second, I have to give this one to Target. Their policy is entirely fair. Another poster mentioned Girl Scouts. They also don't allow Boy Scouts of America to sell outside their stores (which is fine with me, as I'm not thrilled about their receiving federal subsidies while being allowed to exclude gays and atheists). You know who else isn't allow to solicit? The Salvation Army! AT CHRISTMAS! Which is a shame, because Target's color palette is perfect for those guys.

"Equality for all!" This policy? Totally equal. And besides, Target's solicitation policy isn't what's keeping marriage equality down. So calm down, dude.

*(on a personal note, i'm glad people are out drumming up support for marriage equality.)

  14. 14

Get over yourself, Perez. No retail store wants a group out in front harassing their customers for a signature. I go to a store to shop, not be stopped by groups to sign something, even something I believe in. Wrong place. Target or any retail store has every right to want them gone.

  15. 15

The judge wasn't making a statement about supporting "equality" when he gave his ruling, you fool. Honestly, your lame attempts at spin to imply support of your pet cause is pathetic. I don't like being solicited by anyone for any reason when I'm going into a store, and I support Target's action.

  16. 16

Right, so they should say no t the girl scouts, but yes to a gay marriage group because…why???

  17. joka says – reply to this

NO business is going to let people do something like that in front of their store!! stores try to be neutral and don't support/not support anything. it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

  18. 18

Further proof that you don't have any type of training in journalism, soliciting means no soliciting of any type, you cannot protest on private property, there needs don't "trump" the law. If they want to protest they can do it from the closest public property (ie highway, park, etc).

And by the way: I am all for gay marriage.

  19. 19

You need to stop being hypocrite, Perez. Equality for all - should mean no one gets to hang outside Target stores harassing their customers for any reason. It's only fair.

  20. 20

judge was WRONG!!!!!! It is TARGET'S PRIVATE PROPERTY, they have the right to say, NO SOLICITORS on the property. Some customers DO NOT LIKE to be stopped, SOLD TO, LECTURED OUT, ETC. JUST TRYING TO GET INTO A STORE. I have chosen one grocery store over another because one lets ANYONE in front of the doors TRYING TO GET MONEY out of people. I will not sign any petition, no matter who the group says they are, UNTIL I HAVE THE TIME TO LOOK UP THE GROUP TO SEE IF THEY ARE LEGIT-ALL THEIR ISSUES AND THE WAY THEY GO ABOUT THINGS. No matter what the cause. The end does not ALWAYS justify the MEANS. (will take literature to look up later on). How can a JUDGE TELL A COMPANY THAT THEY CAN'T DICTATE WHAT GROUPS ARE ON THEIR PROPERTY? What is this country coming to?

  21. 21

Love Target, will always love Target! You, not so much. Your getting to be really annoying. Not everyone has to support what you want. Get over it.

  22. 22

    No solicitation means just that!

  23. 23

now, Mario, if the court rules in favor of this GROUP, and not Target, letting them solicit sigs on TARGET'S PRIVATE PROPERTY, THEN, you do REALIZE, any ANTI-GAY GROUP can go to this Target store (or I guess any Target in the Court's juridiction) and they too, can get signitures to send to their elected officials stating that THESE CITIZENS WHO VOTED FOR YOU, NEVER WANT a law for gay marriage to go through again and will vote you out if you vote for it. THINK ABOUT THIS, the ruling is NOT GOING TO BE JUST FOR ONE GROUP to hang out at TARGET, BUT the rights for ANY GROUP TO STATION THEMSELVES OUTSIDE OF TARGET! can of worms Mario! can of worms!

  24. 24

If Target or any other company allowed this crap in from of their store I'd turn right around and head back to my car rather than shop there. That's why they don't allow it.

  25. 25

Well, I was going to post my opinion but it looks like the first 19 people took the words right out of my mouth.

  26. 26

Fuck off Perez. Its safe to assume that people go to target to shop not to rally behind causes. You and your gay agenda are so off course , that you are starting to sound totally delusional. Get over yourself dumbass

  27. 27

i am 100% for marriage equality. however, target stores do not let anyone solicit. not the salvation army, the girl scouts, etc. at least they are being consistent across the board. free speech does not extend to private property, and a store has the right to make that decision about who they allow on their property.

  28. j.no says – reply to this

You've managed to take uninformed drama queen to a whole new level. Those solicitors you so lovingly call activists are PAID to be there. Just like the people trying to get your signature for some ballot measure that has unsavory agendas buried underneath whatever hot topic that people are passionate about.

Seriously,do yourself a favor and stop stealing your "news" from other sites and actually be informed so you don't seem like such a talking head idiot.

  29. 29

i agree with absolutely everyone on this!! while im all for gay rights and equality i think Target has every right to do what they did. if you want equality then right there you got it! they dont let anyone solicit in front of their stores so they were giving you the equality you say you so rightly deserve. i like this site to keep up with celeb news and i used to love you too perez…but lately i have been seeing how close-minded and bias you truly are. arent those two qualities whats been holding back gay rights for so long?? maybe you should take a look in the mirror and not only support GAY rights but ALL humans rights.

  30. 30

Well then, the Girl Scouts and the Salvation Army Kettle People should be able to stand outside of Target too. They are trying to make a difference also! Get out of politics until you really understand what Equal Rights means.

  31. 31

You can't expect target to make exceptions just cause you think it is a worthy cause. I am starting to like reading your website less and less

  32. 32

No solicitation means no solicitation. That judge needs to get her hand slapped.

  33. 33

wow mario, so far everone disagrees with you… usually there is at least one or two that will agree, but this time NOBODY

  34. 34

if they let that group of people, who cares what they stand for, set up in front of their store and harass people going in and out then they have to let every group do the same .. which includes people AGAINST equality in marriage.
If it had been a group petitioning AGAINST equality in marriage the judge would have had them removed asap .. it's just not right. If we're petitioning for equality then let's actually make things equal all around don't you think?

  35. 35

Equality for all? You fucking liar. You want specail treatment for the gays. If you are so into equality, why is it not ok to donate to anti-gay causes while they also donate to gay causes. That's equality, but again, you mean specail, not equal.

  36. 36

Sorry Perez, but a no-solicitation policy is a no-solicitation policy. Sorry, but the fight for gay equality isn't the only fight going on in the U.S. There are SO MANY causes, some that are even more pressing, and I think that it's very close minded and selfish of you to think that this one group should get special treatment when there are groups with causes just as important who are following the rules and still getting it done. And forget Target if they don't want solicitation… go to Walmart. More people shop there anyway.

  37. 37

They don't allow ANYONE to stand in front of their stores! Not even the salvation army at Christmas time! Get over it!

  38. 38

Target has a no solicitation policy to keep th playing field level. misscheriamor, commenter number 2, said it perfectly.

They don't allow the Salvation Army to be there either, and they are doing good as well.

I am one of the biggest cheerleaders for equal rights. But I'm not going to complain about a company's policy just for the ONE group I am active for.

  39. 39

Prez, NO. Use your head and be realistic. They have a no solicitation policy, but that is the obvious and easy argument. Let's dig a little deeper. A for-profit, family oriented company like Target is not going to do anything controversial that may alienate their customer base. It doesn't matter what they personally think, it's called good business sense. Customers and profits are king and will always trump your gay agenda and other similar causes that are viewed as controversial by a large number. Same thing with Chick-Fil-A.

  40. 40

Oh, HELL NO! I've been bitching to Target for years about their solicitation policy. It is impossible to exit my Target store without being solicted for one thing or another. It's so damn annoying! Despite a no soliciting sign being clearly posted, Target does not enforce their own rule, so everyone camps out there.

I don't want to be solicited at Target or anywhere else. I don't want to sign your stupid petitions, whatever the cause. Why sign one of these anyway? The "fix is in politically speaking. The people we vote for to represent us never do. I don't want to donate to your charity, because the bulk of every donation goes to pay the obscenely high salaries of the charity administrators. I want to help starving children, not help a fat white guy buy a new Lexus.

  41. 41

I agree with the others. This IS equality for all. They are treating everyone the same.

  42. 42

"We totally understand a 'no-solicitation policy,'"

    I don't think you do…

  43. 43

Honestly TARGET has every right….I stay away from ANY solicitation while trying to buy the items I need from ANY store…Perez this makes me see how much tunnel vision you have….This is AN UNREALISTIC demand and to post Target with A BOO underneath again tells me how really uneducated you really are…Disappointment.

  44. 44

Everytime Perez posts something about target I go out of my way to shop there.

  45. 45

Really, Mario? You "understand "no-solicitation policy," ", except when it's a cause that you support. If they allow the people that support gay rights to solicit that would open he door for ALL SORTS of organizations to solicit funds. INCLUDING the Westboro Church. Is that what you REALLY want to happen? It's better if they just don't allow ANY organizations.

  46. 46

That is BS Perez. If they have a no-solicitation policy it shouldn't be broken for favortism for any cause whether you think it is for the best or not.

Quit forcing your agenda. Everyone is not Equal. Get use to it.

  47. 47

Perez, come on, don't be so fucking blind! You really need to learn how to pick your battles! I, for one, do NOT want to be bothered when I go somewhere to shop! You need to let your vendetta against Target go already!

  48. 48

cool, I'll be heading to Target this afternoon to do my weekly shopping, I was gonna hit up walmart, but now its Target all the way! And if Walmart doesn't stop those loud azz bells ringing in my face every Dec., I'm gonna have to put them on hold. I HATE ALL SOLICITORS! You should hear what I saw when they call me. holey shyt balls!

  49. 49

Even the Girl Scouts are not allowed to sell cookies in front of Target. If a company lets anyone solicit, then the would have to allow union organizers to approach employees too, which is the basis behind the "no-solication" policy. I think shutting the Girl Scouts out is a little harsh but at least they're consistent.

  50. 50

You are a douche… Target is in the bad books now for not supporting equality but it was fine when Gaga, the self styled saviour of the gays, was going to make a lucrative business deal with them…. you are so transparent… so is she… SHAME ON YOU…

  51. 51

I pretty much agree with everyone else here. They have policies, so stop trying to make it about your fucking agenda. No one wants to be bothered when they go shopping. Shove it up your ass, already, Perez.

  52. 52

They have a no solicitation policy. End of story. I don't like Target's politics and simply do not shop there.

  53. 53

Perez, I am a VERY strong proponent for equal rights for gay couples. I am thankful that I live in a country that recognizes the importance of these unions. However, your continued attempts at shoving these "stories" down your readers throats reeks of desperation. You continue to prove that you are one of the most narrow minded prejudiced individuals I've encountered.

Remember, there are two sides to every story, or no story at all, which seems to be the case in this situation.

For example, I myself DO NOT enjoy being approached by ANYONE petitioning or selling outside of stores or malls. Is it possible that Target didn't want to bother thier customers?

  54. 54

What part of no-solicitation policy don't you get? If they did for this group then that means they are discriminating against all the other groups they have kicked off of their property, which opens them to all sorts of issues. Just because this is the issue you care about doesn't make it exempt and make all other issues less important.

  55. Wrenn says – reply to this

I'm proud to say that I spend a lot of money at Target…and will continue to do so. Go Target!!!!!

  56. 56

I dont think you and GAGA can hurt their business maybe you can ruin other people but you will not destroy them..

  57. 57

I'm only posting on here because I think the author of this article is an ignorant douche and dumb to boot, HOWEVER, his heart I might dare to think maybe planning a plan to have the thought that it may be in the right place.

Target doesn't let anyone SOLICIT in front of their stores and I think that you're making an unfortunate story bigger than it actually is just because you think you're some important activist for gay rights as opposed to some of us who actually canvas and march the streets when we need to, not just to get a few hundred views on our blogs. This isn't a Target misstep, you're just a sad little knome.

  58. 58

i'm gay…and you make us all look so bad. no wonder the gay community hates you! none of my friends like you…i used to like coming to your site but lately all you do is whine about "equal rights" and i'm getting kind of tired of it…and this post just keeps proving why my friends and many in our community don't want to be associated with you…UGH!

  59. 59

This post is proof that Perez still is and will always be a bully! I don't care how many crying videos he makes crying and apologizing. As soon as someone doesn't view the world the way he does he goes into attack mode. BULLY!!!

No soliciting! So, if they let your group in will you be ok with the "protection of marriage between man and woman" to solicit signatures right next to them? You are such a hypocrite. Freedom and equality is a two way street. You sound more like you want a fabulous dictatorship. I hear Cuba will be hiring soon… ta ta.

  60. 60

I'm sorry but not everyone agrees that this is doing "good", not everyone wants this change. Please don't assume it is absolute, your opinion.

  61. 61

If the Westborough Church can protest funerals, it makes sense that groups can protest businesses. Businesses should not have more rights than individuals. Just because it's Target's policy doesn't give them legal authority.

  62. 62

Siblings can't marry. Men can't marry men. Women can't marry women. You don't want equality, you want new rights created just for for. As a man, like every other man, you can marry a woman. That's equality.
    I love Target.

  63. 63

while i am completely and totally in favor of equal rights for all, i am really starting to get annoyed with this crap. no-solicitation means no-solicitation. they would remove any groups trying to campaign on store grounds, it just so happens that in this case it was a gay rights activism group. everyone needs to stop twisting target's actions into these seemingly malicious intentions to thwart gay rights in this country. rules need to be followed by EVERYONE!

  64. 64

I am 100% supportive and vocal about equality for all but I agree with Target on this one. What if an 'anti-gay group' wanted to get signatures outside of Target. That wouldn't be cool so Target has to have policies in place in order to protect everyone across the board. To be honest, I do not like my shopping experience to be mixed with any type of solicitation. I don't like girl scouts pushing their cookies, or salvation army ringing their bell. I am happy to give and help but when I shop, I want it to be just about my consumer experience, not be bombarded by special interest groups of any kind.

  65. 65

Re: Gaganheim Artists – Westborough Church protests out on public property. Target, and any other business is PRIVATE property. And as such, they have the right to do what they want on private property. So anyone can come to your house and do as they wish? Didn't think so.

  66. 66

Re: justtfax You are 100% right, you cant close pandoras box now! Targets policy of no solicitation should be accepted across the board, for exactly the reasons you stated justtfax. You wanted equality for all, so now Perez you just might get it, there's two sides to the issue, and now both have the right to petition thier side of this issue thanks to this group pushing Target on the issue…..be careful what you ask for you just might get it

  67. 67

Off to go shopping at Target right now!!! Perez, are you bi-polar? You write one sentence, and then forget what you wrote, and then go totally in the opposite direction in the next sentence.. Get OFF Target's ass….

  68. Corty says – reply to this

Who wants to talk politics when going in to purchase TAMPONS?!?!?!
Pick a more appropriate venue to push your agenda.

  69. 69

Re: Gaganheim Artists – There is a BIG difference between PROTESTING on PUBLIC property, and SOLICITING on PRIVATE property. So you would be okay with the Westboro Church solciting on private property?

  70. 70

    Screw Target

  71. 71

    shut the fuck up perez.

  72. 72

Target can't have their customers getting aids from these _ssholes.

  73. 73

If that is their policy they can't make exceptions for this group or every other group has the right and some might not be very savoury characters.

  74. 74

Umm… that means no one is allowed to solicit… I don't see an issue with this really.
Hell if you let one group solicit, then everyone will want in. It's across the board, no favoritism.

  75. 75

  76. jbdc says – reply to this

I agree… I don't think they should let anyone solicit anything. If they let this group in then at Christmas I will have to deal with those annoying Salvation Army people ringing that damn bell. And btw the Salvation Army supports the Boy Scouts ban on gays!

  77. 77

This is one of the main reasons why I like shopping at Target. Policies are policies. I can't stand being followed by someone with a clipboard coming in and out of a store! They don't allow solicitors, OF ANY KIND! What part of that don't u understand, Mario?!

  78. 78

One of the reasons why I love going to target is to not be constantly harassed by people wanting me to sign things, or donate, or buy things… go to wal mart for that. I support equality for all, but this is NOT an issue against the gay and lesbian community or advocates. This is Target enforcing a no solicitation rule that all their shoppers I would think, appreciate. Go to Wal Mart like all the other people hounding you at their doors.

  79. 79

Let. It. Go. They don't let anyone solicit. Including Girls Scouts, Salvation Army, Toys for Tots–ANYONE. Quit trying to make a story out of nothing.

  80. 80

So if you get your way they will have to let the creepy homophobic group championing Prop 8 and its ilk they will have to let them. Target was fair and let no one regardless of who they were solicit.

  81. 81

equal rights? sure but how the fuck do you expect anyone to take you seriously when you're using tag lines like "icky icky poo", calling people "bb" and making up new baby words like "faboosh"? you and your effeminate flamboyance are a hindrance and an embarrassment to the cause of equal rights. you're nothing but a spectacle and a joke and you'd be hard-pressed to be taken seriously even by children who would be ashamed to use your "baby talk" vernacular!

  82. 82

Not everyone is going to have your fucking opinion Perez. Get it through your big fucking head.

  83. IVIV says – reply to this

so Target has a "no soliciting policy", which applies to EVERYONE, from girl scouts to the Salvation Army bell-ringers, but you have a problem with it being applied to a marriage equality protest? & you think that's EQUALITY? That's asking for special treatment, that is the furthest away from equality.

  84. 84

They were treating them equal. They don't allow anyone to stand in front of the stores to annoy their customers. I don't blame them I don't want to be pestered by people selling things or wanting me to sign things when I go shopping. Why should they have to change their policy for this group. You say you want to be equal but you really don't,you want special treatment for gays.

  85. 85

If they have a no solicitation policy, all well and good. But they (the entire chain) should enforce it uniformly across the board. I live in SD and not too long ago I went into Target and got solicited for Tae Kwon Do lessons on my way in and out and no one bothered those guys while they were on Target property. I have lived in SD for 5 years and every Target I've gone to has ALWAYS had at least one set of solicitors on site in front of the store. So while I'm not saying Perez is correct. It just begs the question of who they will and won't allow to stand in front of their stores.

  86. 86

Re: D-INCARNATION – You probably have AIDS already, please proceed to douche out your personality

  87. 87

    i thought you loved target
oh thats only when you want to bitch about them
youll prob be shopping there tomorrow and selling your junk there the day after

  88. 88

Perez, all you want is drama! Target is such a great company for gay rights. Well most gay or lesbian people have to hide their sexuality, they are able to embrace it and be themselves when they work for Target. Along with the "no solicitation policy" Target has a zero tolerance for harassment in the work place. This means that if any team member is treated disrespectfully based on gender, religion, race, and sexuality it will not be tolerated! Target also allows all team members to get health and life insurance for their domestic partners. Does that sound like a company that is against gays?? I think not. Before you start dogging Target maybe you should get your facts straight on how they stand with gay rights. Target is one of the TOP supporters for Minneapolis Gay Pride and they also give over 3 million dollars to various charities EVERY week. You don't hear Target patting themselves on the back for this accomplishment, but you do hear all the haters in this world bashing the company for one little thing. These stories on Target are getting pretty old. I come here for celebrity gossip… not Target gossip.

  89. 89

you has NO PROBLEM sending people to target for ga ga's album sales. SHAME

  90. bensd says – reply to this

Perez, Thanks for posting this, but you should include the groups name - Canvass for a Cause.

You can tell from Target's anti-LGBT court documents listed at the link you gave (they put a ttransgendered person's name in quotations, didn't want their customers to think Target supported marriage equality, etc) that Target took exception to this groups message.

That aside, in California property rights don't overtake free speech absolutely. If the public is invited to your property en masse and it has a "townsquare" feel, you can't restrict the public' speech.

Solicitation is the exchange of goods or services for money, these groups collect donation and $$$ = free speech.

Don't let the haters get you down Perez, you took the right stance!

We can't let private corporations drastically limit our ability to organize!
