vatican condemns un call for gay rights support

Not. Cool.

Earlier this week, we were very happy to report that Barack Obama is calling for "the United Nations' top human rights body to combat discrimination against gays and lesbians around the world."

Here's what the Vatican's Archbishop Silvano Tomasi had to say in response:

"People are being attacked for taking positions that do not support sexual behavior between people of the same sex. When they express their moral beliefs or beliefs about human nature…they are stigmatised, and worse, they are vilified, and prosecuted."

Way to come to the defense of HATE, Vatican.

We are NOT impressed.

Oh yes Archbishop, God forbid anyone should be 'stigmatized' or 'vilified' for their behaviour or beliefs. That would be like, sooo unjust. Lulz.

  2. 2

I wish you would do more research when forming your opinions and not be such a hypocrite. Should you really be bashing the Catholic church (or anyone who doesn't agree with you)? Isn't that just spreading more hate around the world? Furthermore, do you really think the Catholic church is going to change their stance? One of the reasons it is so attractive to so many people is its consistency. Can we say the same about you?

  3. 3

    .
per usual, the " Christians " are the ones being the least christian

WWJD ???? What would Jesus do ? Nothing but have love for his fellow man.

the Roman Catholic Church needs to change it's title from Christians to

" The Hypocrites " not one religion is more hypocritical than they
    .

Can we have a cute pope for a change?

Bravo kitkath! ITA! The Roman Catholic church teaches to love one another as God loves us. That does not mean endorsing sin. The Catholic Church doesn't say that homosexuals are going to hell or anything like that. We don't know where any of us (gay or straight) are going to end up. It all depends on the individual and what the person decides to do with his/her life. What Catholics do say is that committing homosexual acts is a sin. When I sin (because I do sin - we all do), I ask for forgiveness. I don't go around telling everyone it's okay to commit the same sins I'm committing. I want people to tell me when I'm doing something wrong so that I can become a better person. When you love someone, you try to help them.

Screw all those old farts at the vatican - gesh!

  7. 7

So it is ok for YOU to hate on them, but not ok for them to hate on you.

Got it. Thanks for making my screen name on here come true every day.

  8. 8

Is that "The Queen's 'We" that you are using?

Re: kitkath – The Catholic Church doesn't have to change its stance about not believing homosexuality is natural, but by trying to put a stop to a call to stop vilifying and persecuting GAYS in countries where gays are tortured and killed, well, the Catholic Church is the one being hypocritical…the move isn't to force everyone to accept gays, it's just to stop innocent people from being imprisoned, killed and tortured. I don't see how any huge organization claiming to believe in God and compassion could protest that…

Re: lydbckgy – I don't think by "love thy fellow man" he meant go up and put your dick inside him.
You are forgetting that science also disagrees with homosexuality…hence the reason they can't reproduce.

  11. 11

This is one of the many reasons I left the catholic church. They need to step into the 21st century.

  12. 12

to expect anything more from the vatican would be folly, and the fact is everyone is entitled to their opinion whether you belive it to be right or not. There will never exist a world were all is right and fair and equal. Women, African Americans, were given "equal rights" how many decades ago? And still stereotypes and biggotry exist in regards to them and many other minorities. The people … who want to accept will accept, and those who dont..wont…. true change is gradual, but your no better then the church if you start "villianzing" them for not sharing your own beliefs..spread the message with love not hate. Im a giant supporter of gay rights, but when you spew your message with such a venomous toungue its hard to see your point..or see how your any different at all then these people you call out…hows the old saying go? Two wrongs dont make it right?

  13. 13

India has actually told the West we should stop eating beef to reduce greenhouse emissions but most of us don't care. Plenty of Indian people with a religious background will eat meat, especially the men. The point is people do what they want and 50 years from now most people will wonder why anyone was trying so hard to stop people. We'll stop eating meat when we can't afford to any longer but people will always want to be in same-sex relationships.

  14. 14

It's called opinion Perez , other people are allowed them you know !

  15. 15

omg leave the catholic church alone.
they've had their beliefs for hundreds of years their not going to change them now.
the church takes the stance they have to take but that doesn't mean that all catholics agree with them.
we are all entitled to our own opinions && that includes the pope and archbishop Tomasi.

  16. 16

I think the Catholic Church should split. It's a great Church overall but for one or two niggling little (BIG) ickies. One that actually reflects what the majority of the parishioners actually want to live by and progresses with society, and one for those pontificating old poops living frozen in ancient time. That's how the Anglican religion came to be. Progress and evolution of ideology and authority. One well known reason being King Henry wanted a divorce, not allowed in Catholic faith, so it was another reason to pull away from Rome's authority (which he'd been trying to do his whole reign). The Anglican Church is very similar to the Catholic Church. SO… let's have another. Similar but just enough different. Do away with all this pedantic outdated crap and just enjoy spiritual and personal growth and goodwill.

  17. 17

The Church has a very tainted history, as do other organized religions but why not focus on what they are doing right now? They provide a huge chunk of change in charity work, especially in the Third World. BTW, is it politically correct to bash the Catholic Church and not mention Gay Rights for Muslims? Really? Really! Why doesn't Obama speak out for Gay Rights for Muslims?

  18. 18

I don't see that statement as a hateful one. Just because the Catholic church doesn't agree with homosexuality does not make them necessarily hateful. You're talking about an old religion that has preached this belief, among others, for centuries. Other people's personal beliefs are no different than your own. You are the one who actually had a negative reaction. Stop trying to force your personal beliefs on everyone else. I keep saying this. You cannot make others believe in what you do. I am not a religious person, and I do support gay rights, but I realize that everyone is different. We are not machines. We each have our own thoughts and beliefs. That's what makes us human. You will do better for yourself and the gay community by toning down your own hateful propaganda. You think that everyone who disagrees with your views is evil and hateful. That is not necessarily true. Stop being ignorant, Perez.

  19. 19

The church doesn't change. Thats why I like it . Its a constant I can depend on. If you don't like the religion then don't be a member.

  20. 20

Re: PerezTheHypocrite – on the contrary, science does not disagree with homosexuality. science has found that it is a natural behavior across every species–AND that it is a natural way to control population.

And if God didn't want guys to stick their dicks up each other's asses–he wouldn't have put their g-spots up in there…

  21. 21

there's a difference between hate and disagreement. just because something happens (ie homosexuality) doesn't mean people have to agree with it, accept it or encourage it. nor does it constitute hate when someone chooses to disagree with the life choices of someone else. yes, there are people out there who go out of their way to spread hate, but most people who disagree with homosexual marriage do so not because of hate, but because their moral beliefs make it hard for them to accept it. that's fair enough in my opinion. surely spreading vitriol against the catholic church on a website with as many readers as this one constitutes to encouraging more hate than silvano tomasi has expressed in the above statement? you can't accuse people of being intolerant and hateful against freedom of expression, when you are so clearly doing the same against theirs.

  22. 22

So now if people don't necessarily agree with that life style they hate? That makes no sense at all. I don't judge anyone for their decisions they make in their life, that is not my job. I strive to love all human beings as Jesus loved, but that does not mean I agree with what everyone does. It's not what I would do, but who am I to say that it is wrong. So what you are saying is that since I don't agree with that decision I hate you? That is so far from the truth!

  23. 23

The church will never fully support gay rights. Homosexuality is a big ticket item; lots of guilt to exploit. They will continue to deny, regardless of how many priests are fucking and being suck off by alter boys, rent boys, etc.

  24. 24

    Re: ritaj – agreed

  25. 25

Why is having an opinion or belief that homosexuality is morally wrong equal hate? Are people not allowed to have personal beliefs that differ from yours? There's a difference between believing something and acting hateful towards someone or a group.

As a Christian I DO believe that homosexuality is a sin. Does that mean that I walk around gay bashing and discriminating against those who embrace the gay lifestyle? NO. I believe also that what people choose to do is none of my business. However, I always read about you inciting hate towards anyone who does not jump on your gay bandwagon. Live and let live is a two way street.

  26. 26

what happened to everyone deserving their own opinion. catholics do not say they wont accept homosexuals into the church or love them any less than a straight person. they just do not agree with homosexual acts bc they believe it to be sin. and while i do not agree with that (i dont even believe in god) i do believe everyone has a right to their own opinion and belief without being persecuted and judged. did you not want the same thing for yourself when you "came out?"

  27. 27

Re: PacDan – Right on!!!! My sentiments exactly.

  28. 28

The amount of people on here saying that the Church is allowed freedom of speech is laughable when THEY are condemning the UN and Obama for speak of something they believe in! Also to those saying homosexuality in a sin as it says in the Bible; people pick and choose what to believe from the Bible; it says girls shouldn't braid their hair and there are at least three reference where God says rape is ok..look it up if you don't believe me

America has become such a sad country….

  31. 31

Catholic church is for discrimination. What really sucks is that I went to the local Catholic Church when I was doing some soul searching, and absolutely loved hearing the priest speak. Afterward I was cornered by a guy who bragged about praying in front of a women's clinic in his spare time. I didn't go back. It sucks, because I'd enjoy hearing that priest speak again. He was great. I even spoke to him personally and he told me that issues like gays and abortion, that if I really think about issues and if I come to a conclusion that is different than the church, I followed my conscience, not the crowd.

Not all Catholics are bad. Just the louder ones.

But if the loud ones want to support torture and execution of gays in other countries, I hope the quieter ones step up to disagree with that stance.

  32. 32

Re: PacDan – thank you PacDan, couldn't have said it better.

  33. 33

just so i'm clear, it's fine to be hateful toward christians and make false accusations (he NEVER said he supported hate, he just said he didn't support homosexuality, there's a HUGE difference) because they disagree with you, but the act of disagreement is hate?!

  34. 34

Yeah its funny how you get "hate" out of that comment. The world loves to blame their problems on the "ignorance of the Catholic Church". I'm a Catholic and believe in the same basic human rights for everyone. Talk of Killing and prosecuting gay people is crazy and why that was even brought up in this converstaion is ridiculous. It's wrong and I don't think any Catholic would disagree with me. In fact I haven't heard any catholic say "we should kill the gays" I mean really!? Common people.

The G & L community needs to accept that everyone will not accept everything they believe in….just as Catholics have for over 2000 years.

  35. 35

When your "moral belief" result in murders, and lynchings maybe they should be
    "stigmatized, vilified, and prosecuted."

  36. 36

Try to remember that these are the same idiots that say condoms are immoral.

  37. 37

    Re: PerezTheHypocrite – AMEN!!!

    Re: Susanne Martin – AGREE!!!

Re: catlover – I appreciate your reasonable response.

Re: amycakes86 – I also really appreciate your reasonable response.

If you want me to tolerate you and your beliefs then you have to tolerate mine, even when they are different.

  38. 38

perez, just like you don't like when people who support gay rights are bullied, ridiculed, or 'condemned' the ARCHBISHOP of the VATICAN was just expressing how he doesn't like when people who don't support gay marriage are 'vilified' and attacked for their beliefs.

for thousands and thousands and thousands of years the catholic church as a whole, has, generally, disapproved of gay marriage according to their religion– its just what they believe and obviously the archbishop of the vatican will follow this belief and there is no reason to tear him down for it. do i agree with the catholic church? no. but i do agree with the freedom of speech and opinion when done so intelligently and non-hatefully.

archbishop sounds intelligent, while you, perez, sound like the hateful, childish bigot. disagree with him, but don't make it so clear you want to spit in his face.

  39. 39

Re: Cupcake Lady – have you seen the cars behind the donkeys? That car is you.-You are such a follower that you don't have an opinion on your own!! The Catholic church attacks gays at the same time protects pedophiles!!

  40. 40

You're being dense, Perez. While you obviously don't agree with their position on this issue, right or wrong, it's what they believe. Your stance on gay issues is as rigid as the Catholic Church's: They hate your view, you hate their view. There is no middle ground, nor can there ever be any middle ground. A major tenant of Catholic belief is that homosexuality is wrong. They're way on board with that. So you acting surprised and outraged every time the Church throws out their standard anti-gay objections is flat-out dumb and a waste of time.

  41. 41

It stings when he flings the word HATE around. Geez. I thought the Pope was very sensitive in what he said.

  42. Xenu says – reply to this

    42

Far as I am concerned this is coming from a Church that knew about, tolerated and then covered up molester priests. Then they want to go about and tell others how to live their lives. Clean up the Vatican first, then we will talk.

This is why my religion is now "Science Fiction". Christians, have Jesus, miracles and resurrections, and holy Apocalypse.

We got robots, laser guns and Alien Invasions.

Re: PerezTheHypocrite – Seen this article and must admit I was stunned by the stupidity of the comments afterwards. I had to actually register just to reply to you.

Hyprocrite??? You are registered to this site under the username "PerezTheHypocrite". Judging by your views on homosexuality, clearly, your ignorance knows no bounds. You do realise the is a site is based on the opinions of a gay man. Why are you registered? Looking for attention.

As far as Perez being a hypocrite- if you bothered to read the full statement you might realise that the archbishop complained to the UN that the catholic church was being vilified for their views. They are complaining because they are not allowed to rant about homosexuality without being critisized- that's HYPOCRICY. Some people hold religion so dear it's hard to get any rationality in through their thick skull. Please go and educate yourself before typing again.
