Dear Target…THIS SUCKS!

Ugh.

Target Corp. has reportedly pressed charges against Canvass For A Cause, a pro-gay marriage group that has protested the coporation for its $150,000 donation to a business group backing a Minnesota Republican candidate opposed to same-sex nuptuials.

Canvass For A Cause then started canvassing outside Target's San Diego County stores, which caused them to file a lawsuit, alleging that the activists are driving away customers by harrassing them, cornering them near the front of the store and debating with them about gay marriage.

However, the group disputes this, and says that they also canvas at shopping malls and college campuses to collect signatures and donations in support of the right to marry. Director Tres Watson also claims that volunteers are trained daily to be professional and polite, and to focus on educating the public.

He explains:

"It's very David vs. Goliath. We understand they're the Goliath in the room. They've got all money in world to get us to stop talking about gay marriage. We train our staff and volunteers very carefully in techniques in winning people over. When you're trying to persuade voters and reach out to the community with a message, there is no advantage to being aggressive."

Exactly! We have a feeling that their behavior is being blown of proportion by Target!

Here's hoping that they can prove in trial that all they are doing is attempting to educate the public on why this is such an important right for the LGBT community - and why Target decision to use its money to take a stand against that right is WRONG!

Such a shame. Thank goodness Lady GaGa backed out of that partnership when she did!

    Oh please…

Leave those of us alone who DO NOT believe in gay marriage.

I don't shop at Target so I can be questioned about my political opinions.

    shame on this group!

    YEAH TARGET!!!

  2. 2

    What sucks?

  3. 3

Yawn. Don't really care, going to shop at Target tomorrow.

    4

Except their policy is not to let ANYONE solicit in front of and on their property.
Why should this group think they should get an exception. I personally can't stand all the different groups that crowd in front of business and imped the flow of customers entering or leaving a store.

  5. 5

perez, you are a moron. do you at all understand what this is about? i mean, do you grasp this at all? or did you just see that a lawsuit was filed against a gay rights group, and flip your lid and cry discrimination. get a clue please.

  6. 6

Dear Perez, WHO THE FUCK CARES?!

  7. 7

This is not a gay thing. Target doesn't allow any kind of group to do anything in front of their stores. Girl Scouts can't sell cookies in front of Target, Salvation Army can't ask for donations in front of Target, anti gay groups can't either. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!!

  8. 8

also, as a lawyer, i am positive that target could EASILY win this case at trial, but even so, i can assure you that this case will not go anywhere near trial. too expensive for all sides.

  9. 9

Target can give money to any one person, company, or organization that they choose. And protestors have no right to be causing problems outside their stores…it’s called trespassing. People should stop cramming their view down everyone else’s throat. NOT EVERYONE AGREES WITH YOU!!!

  10. 10

Re: lucky4me13 – Perez is a fool, but good job pointing it out for the billionth time.

  11. 11

Guess what, I live in SD and shop at Target and can say they DO harass the customers. I have never even heard them talk about gay rights. They just yell at the customers to intimidate them to sign their petitions.
I do not think it sucks. Go Target, get rid of 'em.
Perez I love you but you need to research this before passing judgement.

  12. 12

I used to be an employee at Target and from what I remember, it was store policy to not have any type of canvassing anywhere on the store's property. Even kids selling chocolate weren't allowed to stand at the doors. This policy is for the benefit of all customers who simply wish to just shop and leave with no interruptions.

While gay issues are certainly important, I think I have to side with Target on this. If it was an anti-gay group canvassing outside, Target would have probably reacted the same way. It is simply Target policy not to have any kind of group loitering on their premises. I see no problem with that. In fact, I'm glad that I can shop there without having any type of group coming up and talking to me.

I am all for gay rights and gay marriage but I don't agree that every store, company, or business is obligated to push that agenda or bend there rules just because it's politically correct.

  13. 13

Gay Nazi TERRORISTS. You, Mario, and your pals.

Yeah. You're approach is doing you ’cause' a whole lot of good.

    Imbecil.

  14. 14

The city I live in seems to have people picketing / canvassing outside most major establishments. Wether its unions wanting more money, gays wanting marraige rights or whatever they are all agressive. I am so tired of them trying to block my path into where I choose to shop or eat etc. And no they dont get the message across by being so agressive most people take the literature which they force on you and then just throw it on the ground or in the trash. There are better ways to make a point then to harrass shoppers especially in this economy when stores need patrons.

  15. 15

What a terrible human being you are and such a terrible representation of the gay community. You are so ignorant. Anyone who holds an opinion that does not resemble yours is a bigot or full of hatred. Ten years you'll look back at what a spectacle you've become based on your immature behaviour the last few years and you will be so ashamed and filled with regret. This coming from a gay man who is petrified that you have a platform to speak your voice.

  16. 16

Yes, Americans are all for free speech unless it's something they don't like to hear. Then they're for banning, arresting, passing laws, etc. If people don't like the policy of a company, Target included, they should be allowed to protest peacefully outside. That's called freedom and democracy.

  17. 17

If you do not like their policies, go down the street and shop at Wal-Mart,Kmart,Sears,….gesss. Go Target..u know they are starting to sell fresh produce.! Hey I got an idea go suck a lemon Anthony Pres Hilton.

  18. 18

dude, I'm all for gay rights and I 100 percent support gay marriage, but I have to side with Target on this issue. I fucking HATE IT when I get approached by people pushing for a cause when all I want to do is go to the store, buy my shit and get the fuck out. And I'll continue to shop at Target because I honestly feel this group is blowing the whole thing out of proportion. Honestly, at this point is there anything Target can do that you'll be happy with?

  19. 19

target has a NO SOLICITATION POLICY.
in case you didn't know .. that means you CAN'T SOLICIT in front of their stores.
the only reason you're posting this is because it has to do with a gay right group.
if it was any other group you wouldn't care.

  20. @v@ says – reply to this

    20

They're SUING a group that wants to rally others to help better their oppression in society? Is that right? Yikes. Don't people have amendment rights to advocate in public against injustice in the U.S.A. without getting sued by some corporate interest? Hey, corporations, your customers are your interest. People have truth-o-meters, and they'll notice this big foot trying to stomp little guys attempting to empower themselves. I would reconsider this action, and instead do something positive; and I'm not gay. It doesn't look good on you.

  21. 21

I will shop at target just because of this.. thanks crazy group trying to silence speech

  22. 22

So let me get this straight, because Target donated money to a business group who supports a politician who does not support gay marriage, does that mean Traget is anti-gay by proxy and Homo's R' Us decided to camp out front of Target protesting them? Grow the fuck up ass clown!!! Talk about stretching the facts!

  23. 23

    PS - you want equality?
well this is where it starts.

  24. 24

Re: JasonDiggy – Jason, they can spew their bullshit anywhere they want except on private property.

  25. @v@ says – reply to this

    25

Plus, on the flipside, if these advocate groups manning petitions monitored their volunteers civil behavior outside of these stores properly, they might not be getting the equal negative blowback, which is hurting their cause.

  26. 26

I'm gay and couldn't care less about gay marriage. Feel like going to target tomorrow and shop intil my AX has no more money. GO TARGET!!!!!

  27. 27

Perez, I love how you continue to say that Target gave money to a political candidate because he is against gay marriage. They backed him and donated money because of his corporate tax stance. You seriously need to do some research. You have a duty to the people that read your site to know all the facts before you start making these horrible claims. Just makes you look stupid.

  28. 28

    Re: @v@
    are you kidding me?
i wouldn't even shop at a store that had people petitioning out in front, it doesn't matter what the cause is.
target has a policy that NO ONE can solicit in front of their store.
this group is making a big deal out of nothing, trying to make target look like the bad guy for enforcing their policies.
if they're going to let pro-gay groups petition outside of their stores then they have to let anti-gay groups petition out there too.
    equality works both ways.

  29. 29

Target does have a policy of no solicitation of any kind on company property. And from the news reports these people are actively harassing customers. Target is justified in the law suit, I say good for them for trying to protect their customers from being harassed!

  30. 30

And this just in from the Gay News Network…

  31. 31

Folks it's very simple. If you want this country to be governed by Target vote Republican. If you want it to be governed by the little people vote Democrat. It is really this simple and anyone that does not comprehend this is about as smart as Elizabeth Hasselbeck. IMHO

  32. 32

Re: boston61 – Boston61, you are 100% incorrect. Nice try though.

  33. 33

Team Target. They are only being fair. And Perez, read the following sentence to yourself 100 times. Hopefully it will sink in. "When you're trying to persuade voters and reach out to the community with a message, there is no advantage to being aggressive." You do come off as very aggressive.

  34. 34

I am so sick and tired of Perez pushing this propaganda. As somewhat else had stated earlier, Target does not allow anyone to solicit in front of their stores. They do not even allow the Salvation Army to ring their bell in front of a Target store at Christmas. Target is consistent with this policy. I love how the liberals intimidates, bullies and humiliates anyone that disagrees with them. Disgusting!

  35. 35

Big difference between "canvassing" outside a mall or shopping center and a stand alone store. And its hardly a college campus. Im with Target. Theyre in business to sell stuff, not provide a soapbox for any group that wants to use its entryway and bother the patrons.

  36. 36

Re: JasonDiggy – So if I don't like the pants you're wearing, can I stand on your front lawn picketing you and you WON'T call the cops on me? Because I too have freedom and democracy on my side. The protesters are trespassing, which is illegal. Enough said.

  37. 37

You know, I'm a bit tired of folks (especially you Perez) making out like Target is some giant anti-homosexual monster hellbent on preventing gays and the like from exchanging vows in holy matrimony. Wanna know something REALLY crazy? No political platform is built exclusively on the issue of gay rights, because in the grand scheme of things it's not THAT big of a deal, and to a corporation like Target? They probably don't give two shits one way or another, and chose to donate money to whatever candidate it was for a completely different reason. They are a business in it for the money, and I'd bet everything that I own that the candidate that money went to supports some sort of view that would prove beneficial to Target in the only area that matters to them; their profits. It's those too caught up in their personal crusades (whether it be for gay rights or something else) that turns something like this into such a big deal.

  38. 38

I love Target. I still shop there from time to time. It's none of my business who they wish to donate money to, and it's against their policy for people to canvas or peddle shit in front of their stores. I hate going to a store and being stopped for something that I could care less about. I'm not saying that they don't have good intentions, but this is totally bogus. A policy is a policy, and I stand with Target on this.

  39. Thor says – reply to this

    39

I wont go into a store where there are petitioners or people selling stuff..I just want to go into the store, get my stuff and leave with out dealing with people asking me a million things or trying to sell me crap I dont need.

  40. 40

1finn I believe is correct: Target doesn't allow any groups/charities/organizations to canvass on their property. If there is a lawsuit, than this group violated Target's policy. Simple as that.

  41. 41

Mario, you're such an idiot! So you're saying that rules shouldn't be broken but ONLY for gay issues? Your last post said you understand a "no solicitation" policy…apparently u don't! NO ONE wants to be chased down while trying to shop! I appreciate their policy, that's one of the main reasons why I chose to shop there!

  42. 42

Stupid protesters should respect the rights of private busiinesses, get to the curbs you dumbasses and get arrested like any other gay marriage fanatic.

  43. 43

Yet more backlash against the gay agenda.

  44. 44

The only reason Gaga backed out is because she was being called a hypocrite by everyone.

And if they tell every group they can't solicit then there shouldn't be an exception for a gay activist group.

I'm all for gay rights (I live in Canada and we are bit more accepting to the gays, HELL, they can get married here) but standing in front of a store trying to shove it down people's throats isn't the way to go. We all know there are a lot of people that are not comfortable with same sex relationships and you can't BULLY them into changing their minds.

  45. 45

I am a supporter of gay rights, but I side with Target on this one. No shopper wants to see protesters of any kind when they go shopping. It gets annoying!!!

  46. 46

Get over it Perez Target is awesome.

  47. 47

i will never buy from target again.

  48. 48

you should really look into stuff before you start blasting! you perez the biggest bully of them all, besides the phelps church, should know that Target was one of the first companies to have same sex benefits. they give to everybody and nobody can win. i'm sorry but if your a donkey or an elephant- your wrong. how can you agree with everything one side says. you look sooooo ignorant!!! keep protesting target that way the schools they fund will lose out. DUMBASS! and lady gaga- the most unoriginal piece of crap out there, she's never had an original thought in her life. I can tell you about good original music- RAWK ON!!! i'll keep shopping at TARGET every week.

  49. 49

    Er… isn't this already a month old?
Is Perez wishing everyboby has no memory?

  50. @v@ says – reply to this

    50

Re: scotch_pirate – Bah. Policy, schmolicy. They shouldnl't hide behind anti-people rules, and neither should you. Some rules should be broken for a good cause, just saying. Equality is a good cause. I did post a flipside comment that might not have been up before you typed that. No doubt the groups targeted TARGET because of their political affiliation and camped out there. Maybe Target should be more mindful of whose campaign they contribute to. People are noticing. BTW, I like your Perez name. Care to expound? Are you a Scotsman Pirate, or are you a scotch pirate? Hiccup?

  51. 51

Shame on you, Perez. I'm all for gay marriage. Target allows NO solicitors on their property. I in no way want to be bothered by protestors when I go shopping. This is going to turn people against the gay cause. I hate obnoxious people. It's not allowed, period, by any group on Target property. Sue them, Target. I don't care.

  52. 52

Re: BeeLahhve – Why? Because they are enforcing their policy of not allowing any type of protestors on their property. I thank them. I don't want to be bothered. And I am for gay marriage. But when I'm shopping, I don't want to be bothered.

  53. 53

Go, Target. These morons who solicit ANYTHING at a store should be shot. Really. Just fucking down them. I go to a store to shop, not to get into any sort of political discussion.

  54. 54

Re: spam_iam – I SO agree. It doesn't matter what they were picketing for, they would've sued them Perez. If it was "We think your target symbol is too scary for animals!" and they sued you wouldn't have said shit. But because they're an anti-gay group you whine. There are signs posted at ever Target that there is no solicitation. I wish WalMart would institute it as well because I'm tired of every candy selling scary person jumping at me when I leave the store. In my town it's not just kids selling cookies or popcorn, but scary guys collecting for random charities who actually grab your arm. If I wanted to be preached at I'd go to church. If I want to buy some goddamn tampons in peace it's my right to do so!

  55. 55

Good for Target! I hate nothing more than to be attacked when I'm walking out of the store, across a parking lot. I wish Walmart and Trader Joes would enforce this rule. There is a time and place for everything and the parking lot at the local mall IS NOT ONE OF THEM!

  56. IVIV says – reply to this

    56

Target has a no soliciting policy & that applies to EVERYONE…equality. Get it? So they harassed customers, cornered them, & drove business away. Target is taking a stand & standing up for themselves, behind their policy which is clearly stated, & for it's customers. But they suck? oh, and gaga & everyone else knew how Target was, & thanks to this site your readers are well aware of their donation history, yet Gaga went ahead with her partnership with them. But you never called her on it. You only praise her now that she backed out. well at least unlike Gaga, Target sticks to what they say. If she cared so much she wouldn't have made the deal with them in the first place. I'm all for equality, which is why I think it's stupid you think it's wrong that this specific group doesn't think Target's no solicitation policy should apply to them. Well that's not equality, that's special treatment.

  57. 57

You go Target. Stand up for yourself. There is no reason whatsoever for you to change your policy for this group. They are squawking so much about wanting to be equal, but when you treat them just like everyone else they throw a hissy fit.Target doesn't let any group stand outside their stores and hassle their customers. Not Boy Scouts,Girl Scouts, or even The Salvation Army. Why the hell should they have to change their policy for this bunch. I hate being bugged when I'm trying to go shopping, most people do.Target realizes this thats why they have a no solicitation policy. I see no reason to change it.

  58. 58

You may not agree with Target, and I may not agree with Target, but I do believe in private property.

And I do believe in the right to remove anyone I wish from my property.

  59. 59

You're as clueless about this as you are about their deal with Gaga. You and people like you need to seriously check into the donations the stores you shop at make. You'll probably end up finding out that a large majority of them are owned or ran by republicans and that many of them make donations similar to those Target has made. Maybe you should check into the label your precious Gaga is on, see who they've donated to.

  60. 60

I live in Ohio. unfortunately. and when there is a big election coming up this state gets so polarized it literally splits in half. so i know all about canvassing. i've seen way more of it from religious groups than from democrats.

  61. 61

Just spent $800 at target today:)

  62. 62

Perez, don't expect everyone to be pro-gay marriage. Do not bully those who are anti-gay marriage!

  63. 63

Okay, I think enough of us are done with Perez and HIS agenda. Dude, what don't you get?? WE are TIRED of this BS..Target can do whatever they want to. I don't want people of ANY group bothering me when I'm shopping. Yes I believe in equality, and I will show that in the voting booth, but you're getting to be boring, late on stories, and a one note type of person… Okay, so what website is giving the entertainment news, without the gay agenda in every other story?
.. NO OFFENSE… And a website where the person knew how to spell would be nice too. Suggestions?

  64. 64

this policy is for every group that is tresspassing on their property soliciting customers. Of course they're going to get charged. This probably won't go to court. Yes I support gay marriage but I for one can actually see Target's point of view. I have to do that at my place of work also.

  65. @v@ says – reply to this

    65

It is Target's property. I just think the group is trying to make a point. Now grab your credit cards and whatever you do, don't let a little equality get in the way of your power shopping.

  66. 66

and yet gaga sells her special edition solely through target

  67. 67

i am 100 percent behind target on this one. if i am going to shop in a store, i do not expect to be harrassed by some group. if they want to solicit people, they need to set up a booth and let customers come to them. they should not approach people. that is harrasment and it will be met by my fist in their face!

  68. 68

This was really the last straw for me Perez. As a Christian woman, who does support gay rights; I cannot, with good conscience continue to read your site. 1. You run a CELEBRITY GOSSIP SITE, not a political one. 2. You claim to support equal rights and anti-bullying; yet anyone that disagrees with you is a bigot, monster, etc. To me, that is ALMOST more bigoted bc you have a site that is broadcasting that kind of hate to millions. 3. You don't even do the research you NEED to do to EFFECTIVELY rally people to support your causes. It's as if your posts almost do more damage. I realize that I'm only 1 reader and that you're not going to loose sleep over the loss of my web-traffic. I even wonder if you read these comments, since a lot of them have echoed similar opinions over the last few months and nothing changes. It's not until some celebrity like Tyra Banks bribes you with an appearance on ANTM; or a punch to the face by Will.I.Am that you even consider changing. So, farewell Perez; know that it was your aggressive, bigoted and careless behavior that lost you a reader.

  69. 69

Re: BrookeyBabe – Well said, I agree!

  70. 70

Of course the group is not going to admit they were being aggressive or harassing people, it only makes them look bad. Where you there Perez? If not, shut your god-damned piehole.

  71. 71

Re: @v@ – I could give 3 shits If they want to rent an empty lot and parade around! I don't however want to listen to the crap or see them when I'm trying to get in and out of the store. So I'm glad that they're being sued, now others will think twice. I hope other stores start doing the same.

  72. 72

    Dear Target… This Rocks!

  73. 73

Re: BeeLahhve – Trust me Honey, they won't go out of business because you no longer shop there.

  74. 74

Sorry Perez, but a few months back I clicked on a news story on this issue and these people were DEFINITELY harassing the customers. If nothing else, these types of "true believers" scare off people who may be sympathetic to their cause. Perhaps they were not affiliated with this particular group Target is suing, but, if iy was them, then Target will definitely win.

  75. 75

Re: boston61 – jeez, you can't be THAT stupid, can you?

  76. 76

Yes Target, that is the definition of an activist group.

  77. 77

    Good for Target.

What are you saying, Perez? That anyone who does not agree with you must shut up and never disagree? That they must never support any political party or movement that you do not agree with?

You and your cohorts are fascists, and it's frightening.

  78. 78

Way to go Target Stores! I am sick of trying to enter a store and being approached by any group pushing their agenda.

  79. 79

Why is Target giving out huge political contributions, anyway? Giving to schools = that's great, but the rest of it… is starting to turn me off from shopping at Target. -Put the 'extra' money back into your employees, or giving the rest of us lower prices.

  80. 80

Re: JCPiscool – Exactly. I just started working at Target and its not going to stop me from working and shopping :)

  81. 81

I personally work at Target and have for the past 2 years. As many have said before me, you CANNOT solicit in front of Target stores! Why should a gay rights group be an acception? I am all for gay marriage, and gay rights but just because you happen to be gay doesnt mean that everyone has to follow what YOU think is right or wrong. Get over it, not everyone agrees with you. Thats life. GROW UP.

  82. 82

Re: @v@ – It is pretty obviously that most people, especially most people on this site, do not want to be harassed outside of a store. When a person goes to a store, they want to get in and then out. How hard is that to understand? Standing outside a store is not going to get me to want to listen to someone or to make me change my views (Oh and I do support gay marriage so they would not be swaying me at all). There are other ways the group can spread their equal rights. I am all for gay marriage but I am still going to work and shop at target. Suing them is not because they are for gay rights, it is because they want SPECIAL TREATMENT. Hmmm funny how an equal rights group wants special treatment. Maybe if you do not have a problem with people harassing you outside a store, we will give you all of the groups to deal with.

  83. 83

I'm 100% for gay rights, but there is nothing more irritating than being bothered by people everytime you try to walk in or out of a store.

It's not a gay rights issue, it's a tresspassing issue.

  84. 84

Re: didntneed2seethat – Why do unions and companies like GE give so much money to Democratic political campaigns? GE paid $0 in taxes after making 12.1 billion in profit last year. I think you are just adverse to anyone contributing to a political campaign that supports Republicans. Get real!

  85. 85

This surprises you, Why?? Target is the only major store that wont allow Salvation Army to stand on their property to get donations. And their prices are too high and they rip off their own suppliers purses!! Do we see a theme here, Perez???

  86. 86

my goodness, shut the fuck up already. Private corporations can give their money to whatever the hell they want. It's THEIR money. That group may have been able to peacefully stand in front of Target preaching their ideals, but it doesn't matter WHO they are. No one is allowed to stand in front of the stores preaching their crap. If it was an anti-gay group, they'd get the same boot that the pro-samesex marriage people would have. I call THAT equality. Stop shoving your ideas down people's throat and just stick with celeb news. If you want to protest, go to Uganda and get your ass thrown in jail to shut you up.

And just in case you didn't notice, in the 85+ comments you got on this topic, almost ALL of them tell you you're an idiot that needs to shut up on this crap.

    Pro-Target!

  87. 87

Re: FreakinAwesome – your comment was freakinawesome :) i am all for gay right too, but it's not a gay right thing. It is a simple trespassing issue.

  88. @v@ says – reply to this

    88

Re: yeaman – I hear you, and realize that on this issue am definitely in the minority. I see nothing wrong with having a little social conscience along with my shopping. If I don't want to be bothered, I'll proceed inside the store or to my car to leave. I simply think that Target could have gone with the flow here and created a win win for them and the advocate groups. Maybe they still will somehow. Covering the eyes and ears only keeps the discontent going. I'm pro resolution, pro mediation rather than a trouble maker.

Whether I support gay marriage or not isn't the issue. The issue is that when I go to a store I don't want to be harassed, lectured or asked for money as I walk in. This includes the Salvation Army, The Girl Scouts and yes Mario even Queers for a Cause.

yup she did the right thing

I just want to say. I work for Target.

My partner gets his health insurance through me, as they provide benefits for the both of us.

Also, yes. The anti-soliciting policy is pretty straightforward. This would happen with any group that harassed my guests as they came into the store. When the guests complain, that's when it becomes a big deal. Guest needs and issues come first.

Perez- Target donated to that politician because he supports issues relevant to the company and in-line with their corporate goals (e.g. MN job creation). It had nothing to do with his stance on gay marriage. At the time this happened, Target had simultaneously donated an equal amount to a Minneapolis organization in support of gay rights. You should do some research before immediately assuming the big corporate giant is out to ruin your cause. The company employs more gay people and supports more gay causes than any other Minneapolis-based corporation. Target is actually the main sponsor of the Minneapolis Pride Fest every year. Wonder if Gaga knows that?

Your lack of tolerance is stunning

Target has a wide range of clients and sells to the entire country. It is a store who is not going to stand for or against political issues, other than the basic "all are created equal and can commit commerce here" type. I am pretty sure Target has not ever made a stand against gay rights, and never will. Collaborations with Isaac Mizrahi, countless other designers for Target exclusives…. This is simply a no heckling on private property issue, they shouldn't be pressured to take a stand either way. Neutrality is peaceful. This is businesss trying to NOT mix with politics, let it be.

Re: JasonDiggy – PRIVATE PROPERTY. Target stores are on PRIVATE PROPERTY. It has nothing to do with free speech. Stand at the edge of the parking lot and do whatever the hell you want on public property. But if Target's policy is no soliciting PERIOD, then NO ONE gets an exception.
