Portman's Dance Double Slams Her With "5 Percent" Claim

| Filed under: Film FlickersNatalie PortmanOscars

What Are Portman's Real Dancing Statistics?

The dancing double ballerina for Natalie Portman is tired of being hushed about how much dancing she did in the movie, and is now speaking out about it.

This comes after we brought you the news of Natalie's instructor/baby daddy/fiancée defending Natalie and how much she actually did in the movie.

So how much does the double, Sarah Lane, claim the actress did?

“Of the full body shots, I would say 5 percent are Natalie. All the other shots are me.”

That's a HUGE difference from what we heard from the instructor (he said 85%).

Lane obviously disagrees:

“The shots that are just her face with arms, those shots are definitely Natalie,” she says. “But that doesn’t show the actual dancing.”

Lane also claims that producer Ari Handel specifically told her to keep her mouth shut:

“They wanted to create this idea in people’s minds that Natalie was some kind of prodigy or so gifted in dance and really worked so hard to make herself a ballerina in a year and a half for the movie, basically because of the Oscar,” says Lane. “It is demeaning to the profession and not just to me. I’ve been doing this for 22 years…. Can you become a concert pianist in a year and a half, even if you’re a movie star?”

But, even if this is all true, Lane doesn't harbor any jealous or anger toward the Oscar award winning actress. In fact, she thinks she did a wonderful job:

“I do give her a lot of credit because in a year and a half she lost a lot of weight and she really tried to go method and get into a dancers head and really feel like a ballet dancer. [Natalie] is an amazing actress, for sure,” she says. “I know that it’s not a personal thing against me. I know that it’s just a political thing. It’s just unfortunate that I kind of lost credit.”

Wow. We're not sure what to believe. We do know that they have the technology and means to superimpose Natalie's face over Lane's, but it'd be nice to really hear an accurate account of who did the representation in the film.

A lot of the reasons Natalie won, to us, were the scene outside of the dancing, and the emotion she conveyed through her acting and facial expressions. It wasn't ALL about the dancing for us.

Who do U think is the real dancing-star of the movie??

You are a body double, don't you know what a body double is? I don't care who you are or what credit you get. If you didn't want to do a body double gig you shouldn't have done it.

  2. 102

geez who cares. the dancer has a point, being that they have been making it seem natalie took on the lion's share of the dancing, which simply is not possible as anybody with dance training would know, especially for someone at 27, and she makes a good point by saying it does demean the profession. on natalie's side, why the hell did her fiance speak out about that? i mean really does she need more credit than she's already been given? swept the awards clean, won an oscar, countless articles about how much 'suffering' she went through for the role. i love natalie but if i have to hear another story about the trials she went through…her fiance doesn't seem like a very good guy. i don't know why he would make a statement in the first place.

  3. 103

since when do doubles get ANY credit?

  4. 104

who cares about the dancing, it didnt even seem that impressive. the acting was ALL natalie. the dancing is simply a side note. i personally wouldnt have cared if she only did 0% of the dancing. didnt see the movie to watch her dance, didnt even expect her to dance well. saw it to watch her exercise them actings chops, not them gams

  5. 105

i don't think it was really a question of whether natalie deserved her oscar, obviously there is more going into that decision than just the illusion of dancing. but the fact still remains that if this dancer is correct in her accusation that she didn't get the dance credit she deserved, which i fully believe, then that is wrong and should be corrected immediately.

Funny. People really don't like Natalie. I don't understand why because she is so much better than the rest of us. We should be in awe of her perfection and never expect her to thank other lesser people.

"Hey, you know that scene of James Bond getting hit by a car?? That was actually me. Pierce Brosnan is a fake. He's never been hit by a car."

Re: danerq – Um, she never said that Natalie won the Oscar for dancing. She clearly said that Natalie is an amazing actress but it isn't okay to say Natalie was dancing 85% of the time when she wasn't. This girl is a dancer and just wants credit for her dancing. Anyway what she said is true, most ballerinas start at a young age, Natalie couldn't have learned everything in a year and a half.

  9. 109

Even if Natalie didn't do a significant chunk of the dancing, there is little reason for her to lie about it or support lies about it well after she has been paid for the film and the film itself has made most of the money it will make. The double just wants notoriety, and clearly is under the delusion that these are still the Star Wars years for Portman - who isn't yet an incredibly respected actress.

This is just genius marketing. Natalie has her Oscar, and even MORE people will go out and buy/rent the DVD to try to catch the body-doubling. AND the ballerina in question will get bigger audiences because she is now known as the one doing all that beautiful dancing. Everyone wins, case closed.

  11. 111

um nat didn't earn that oscar it was bought and paid for by the studio in good conscience she should've declined the nomination and not attended the ceremony. not everybody in hollywood uses body doubles Joanne Woodward for example never did even in Rachel Rachel which featured her first nude scenes granted under a sheet. but it was different in 1967 than it is now and she had already won an oscar a decade before that and younger than Natalie after she had miscarried her first child

  12. 112

sorry folks, but Natalie did not deserve the oscar. She may be pretty, but she's not a very good actress… and most of the dancing that people were impressed with wasn't even her.

  13. 113

    Natalie's cheek implants are crooked.

  14. 114

portman deserved the Oscar even less than Jennifer Hudson. Oscars are all about hype.

  15. 115

Natalie should give credit to the real dancer.. the problem is that Natalie came off as if she did all the dancing herself.. liar.. just like sneaking around with men that are not available.. she is a nasty liar..

  16. 116

    Waaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh. B-O-O-H-O-O.

  17. 117

yea who cares, technology has come a long way but it is still obvious when it is Lane's body.

Re: JeremyLN – No one watches her? She has her own entry in Wikipedia with a long list of her medals, honors, awards, arts fellowship and ballet performances. G@v@gle is your friend.

Re: HateMachine – #27. It was a joke about Jennifer Beales which, clearly, you didn't get.

  20. 120

Re: K-Momm – Someone switched your ass with your face. Oh wait…

  21. 121

I thought she won the Oscar because of her ACTING skills, not her DANCING SKILLS? lol

Natalie is a a great talented actress. I think she portrayed the ballerina persona very well.

  22. 122

Sour grapes. This bitch should shut up and sleep with Tiger Woods or make a sex tape with a celeb. That way, she'll get ALL the attention that she's craving because obviously not capable of being professional.
