Couric Leaving CBS Evening News Anchor Chair

| Filed under: TV NewsKatie Couric

Couric Stepping Down

Sadly for the people over at CBS Evening News it looks like Katie Couric will be leaving her chair for some other opportunity, just 5 years after she historically took the position.

She was the first woman to solely helm a network TV evening newscast.

But after her debut, even though the ratings were decent, they fell to the 3rd slot for the night against their competitors and seem to have stayed that way.

So according to an anonymous CBS exec, the anchor will be taking her talents elsewhere:

A network executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Couric has not officially announced her plans, reported the move to The Associated Press on Sunday night. The 54-year-old anchor is expected to launch a syndicated talk show in 2012 and several companies are vying for her services.

We're sorry you feel like you have to step down, Katie, but we'll support any move you think is right for your career! As long as you're happy!

We'll def keep watching no matter where you are!

Good luck!

    Katie sucked as the anchor.
She does not have the creds or the presence as Cronkite or Rather or Bob Schieffer.
She tried to make her bones humiliating Sarah Palin, but instead, she just make a joke of herself. And she turned off many MANY folks in the midwest, especially women who thought Katie was going to be the nice girl from the Today Show.
CBS didn't want to hang onto her anymore, especially after Diane Sawyer went to Evening News and pulled ABC into the #1 spot. It wasn't that Katie was a woman. She is a big PHONY!!! And the ratings proved it.

Re: SayWha? – F.U. She sucked, has always sucked and will always suck. Pile on that her looks have faded and now she is pruned up hag.

The "CBS Evening News" did not "fall" to 3rd place when Couric took over - it was already there. It was in 3rd place under Dan Rather and Bob Schieffer before Couric arrived.

Good riddance, hope she never appears on TV again………..

Sadly for the people at CBS Evening News? Their rating tanked when she took over as anchor. I'm sure they can't wait to get her out of there.

Why is it 'sadly' for the people over at CBS? She was horrible in that position. She is not a real or hard hitting journalist and should never have been given that job. If anything. I am surprised that they kept her in that position all these years and did not sideline her earlier. If anything this is a happy announcement for CBS news, now maybe they can get a quality news reader in the position and regain respect has a serious news organization.

Someone who reads a teleprompter well is NOT a journalist, IMO.

What do you mean "sadly"? She drove the show off a cliff!! She was terrible!! Not a newsperson, a liberal, slanted distorter of truth, and everybody knew, hence ratings to match her dismal performance.

That's too bad, I thought she was good in the position. I've watched CBS' evening news for - FOREVER; (and GMA in the morning, since the 80s). She did a great job, and I can't believe she's 54, she looks fantastic!

Re: SayWha? – F Me??? Oh hell naw! Couric is not ready for Prime Time and never was. Shame on your lemmings following her.

Re: nycityny1 – CBS News was in 3rd place, but Couric had lower ratings than Bob Scheiffer. Couric got 14 million dollars to pull up the CBS News franchise. She failed.
    Epic Failure.

    About freaking time. She stunk.

I love the way her publicist is spinning it as her decision to step down. Hehehaha! Good riddance! Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out! The door wouldn't deserve such an affront! A sydnicated show with this dimmni will go nowhere. She should just retire with her millions and spare herself further humiliation.
