Songwriter Heather Bright Calls Out Some Artists

heather bright calls out artists

During a recent interview, songwriter Heather Bright called out certain artists for their "shady songwriting practices."

Here's Heather on whether or not artists take publishing credit and money, even if they didn't write their own songs:

"It depends on who you are. Rihanna takes publishing, Justin Bieber takes publishing, Kanye West takes publishing. On all the stuff that they don’t write, they take publishing."

Heather on Justin Bieber's Somebody to Love writing credit (a song she wrote):

"Umm… How did he get a writing credit on it? That’s an interesting question. I don’t know. (laughs)"

And here Heather with some praise for artists who do, in fact, write their own songs:

"You can’t be Rihanna and be producing and writing records. You just can’t be doing that. You just won’t have time. All the appearances, the performances, and the ‘this,’ and the ‘that,’ you gotta show up to record, you gotta promote the album, go on tour. I mean, people like Lady Gaga – It’s amazing that they can find time to write! They have to write on tour, all of those artists who actually write!"

What do U think of Heather Bright's comments? Is something rotten in the state of Denmark songwriting?

She seems like she is doing just what Sarah Lane did to Natalie Portman..in a way. Maybe I do not follow too closely to Rihanna and Justin but I've never heard them take credit for songs. I even remember hearing Rihanna giving credit to Skylar Grey (writer of Love the way you lie) at an appearance she did.

  2. 2

On the money, all pop artists are bullshit.

  3. 3

Mariah writes. I love Mariah. Too bad she only gets credit for her crazy antics. Gaga's crazy antics are dubbed "fashion" or part of her "artistry". Only artists who sit behind a piano tend to get credit for writing…like Gaga or Alicia Keys.

  4. 4

none of these comments are anything new.being a songwriter without being an "artist" is like being a second class citizen.you are lucky if you can keep any of your publishing.it is sickening.

  5. 5

Some artists are so greedy. One of the worst is Beyonce. Not only does she steal songs, she has the gaul to go around telling people she's a songwriter and even makes up stories about how she was "inspired" to write some songs when she only changed ONE sentence. At least Britney Spears doesn't lie about her abilities. I guess that's why Britney is worth 100 million and Beyonce is worth 300 million. Greedy greedy.

  6. 6

Born this Way is awful. I get that its all 'be yourself' and what not, which is cool, im into that. But the song itself is pure garbage.

  7. 7

Re: yeaman – It's more about money. By STEALING publishing rights the artist will stand to gain soooo much more money. That's basically stealing residual income from song writers. Song writers can't go on tour to make money like singers do.

  8. 8

for someone whose job it is to write songs for people you'd think she wouldnt want them writing them on there own, that would be less work and money for her. and coming out to trash people will make her loose work as well, wonder if she can collect unemployement checks? hmm

Lets be honest for a minute… any dope can write a "hit" song… look at that HORRIBLE song "friday" rebecca black sings, the lyrics are a joke but it's become a hit.

However, not everyone can sing & dance & be a "pop star" doing workouts every day and being in the press. It sounds like this bitch is jealous that she's only doing the lyrical work & she wants to be in the media's eye…. get over yourself!!

  10. 10

Re: auds – Friday is not a hit song people think it's a joke anybody can write a meaningless hit song but critically their career would be over. Writing a real hit that is heard years from now only happens once in awhile very few artists do it today. Without the song the artist would have nothing to perform since they can't write lyrics themselves. And what should she be jealous of she doesn't need them they need her. I have been hearing a lot about songwriters getting mad over this shady practice it's not just her.

  11. 11

oh, i was reading this post..which caught my eye because i thought you were actually on to something, until i got to the last paragraph where it mentions lady gaga in favorable light…what a fucking shock. the only reason you posted this shit is so you can highlight lady gaga's songwriting abilities. you are so transparent. if her songwriting was soooo revolutionary, you wouldve have to post this crap reminding people who writes her music. you and her both SUCK

  12. 12

Re: auds – For pop acts, their success is almost completely dependent on their producer and song writers. It's like the studio chooses someone based upon an image they construct, then team them up with the best song writers. Britney was so lucky because her first single was a Max Martin song. Do you think she would have been famous if it wasn't for him? He has done almost all of her hit songs. He has 5 songs on the billboard hot 100 right now.

  13. 13

she sounds like a woman scorned but I do see where she is coming from. true singer/songwriter's get no credit and remain the type of artists that you have to search out while these oversexed, untalented wannabe's get all the limelight. sara bareilles, ingrid michaleson, corrine bailey rae are all totally underrated MUSICIANS that do not get the recognition they deserve simply because they don't take their cloths off and gyrate across the stage.

  14. 14

I can agree with her about Justin Bieber. I remember him saying he took songwriting credit for Somebody to Love, yet it wasn't even his song to start out with. This lady and Usher wrote it together, and Usher was going to use it for his album, but decided not to and gave the song to Justin. So infact, Justin never wrote it.

  15. 15

    I like this lady.

  16. 16

finally and there is a million teeny boopers that dont realize this because they are part of a flock that eats up all the bs the industry feeds them. they want you to be blind to the fact that alot of the times the "she writes her stuff" is a lie. its all about money beyounce, taylor swift, kate perry, avril justin, etc etc they pay the song writer money to throw their name on the songs credits. They threaten the song writer by saying if you dont go along you get no money and we will black list you in the industry. these scumbags that take credit from struggling song writers and then lie to you are who you support when you buy a kate perry or beyounce or gaga record. nice

  17. 17

    Re: auds

you are part of the flock buys into the pop image. Every fan of these popstars will defend there hero to the death despite all evidence going against what they believe. with brittney it started with, "she doesn't lip synch" then when it was known she does they went to "well she dances so hard and entertains so she can't breath enought to sing" then her dancing went so they resorted to the last gasp of "f it she's a legend and is a mom and 29 let her be." then don't be a popstar if your too old to do it. they will defend anything and then when that isnt the latest fad they will move on and to the new and say "oh britt yeah she is a joke but blank blank he is the real artist and soo…" beside you have it ass backwards… not many people at all can write a hit song (thee are like 5 major songwrites in the industry all writing for the popstars you listent too) its so hard to create a universal melody out of no where with your own talent and hard work. ANYBODY CAN GO TO DANCE CLASSED 6 HOURS A DAY (THIS IS HER JOB, ALL SHE HAS TO DO IN LIFE) MEMORIZED MOVES SHE IS TOLD TO DO AND HAVE A THOUSAND DOLLAR AN HOUR TRAINER GET YOU IN SHAPE. ARE YOU SERIOUS. YOU THINK WORKING OUT AND SITTING DOWN LETTING PEOPLE FILM YOU AN DTAKE PICTURES IS HARD WORK. this is the mindset of kids today and what it means to work hard. its sad but they copy what they see on tv. so niave so young and dumb. sorry

  18. 18

    Re: auds

lets do an experiment. wake tomorrow and go sit at a bench for a little while and let your friends take pics and ask you questions. then go to the gym or your basement and do some exercises maybe lift a weight or two. then see if one of your friends can teach you a new dance move. i bet even you (being a non "talented" popstar) could get this done in just a day. now the day after that try and write a hit song (with music and arrangment melody and words) See if you can pull that one off as easy. get real

  19. 19

    Re: auds

on the odd chance you pull that off, i will pay you 5 bucks and just say i wrote it then.

  20. 20

Re: squidgen – Spot on- this has gone on for ages though - it's hard to get a cut as a new or unknown writer without giving in to this bullshit

  21. 21

Re: auds – You really don't know what you are talking about - sorry

  22. jham says – reply to this

Of course there's something rotten, it's all a lie and smoke and mirrors. I was watching Truth or Dare the other weekend and was sadly shocked when I heard Madonna singing with absolutly ZERO backup voice track. It's all such bs - people with real talent rarely get to shine. Just the corporate puppets.

  23. 23

Re: toolman85 – Wow someones got some hate..and just to let you know, Taylor Swift DOES write most of her songs. She used to write songs way before she became famous. And she has admitted when other people contribute or help her write songs. She won awards for her song writing so before you bash people, maybe get the facts right.

  24. 24

When i hear a song, I usually just assume that someone else wrote the song. You can look into the cd case and see who contributes to the writing of each song. I doubt many people listen to a Justin Bieber song and are like "Oh, that Justin knows how to write music."

  25. 25

the music business is freakin shady and mostly smoke and mirrors. you know why they give the teen artists song writing credit? It's so that teens will buy into that artist believeing the lyrics came right from their teeny little hearts when really the songs were written by some 40 year old professional songwriter in L.A. or nashville nobody gives a shit about. I write songs as a hobby but sadly for me no one will ever hear them cuz i'm not 15 and a youtube sensation

  26. 26

i personally love when i see a dance track with 6 or 7 writers on it. I'm like really it took 6 of you to write this piece of shit?

  27. 27

I really feel like Perez only posted this because the girl mentions gaga in a "positive light" Idk.. if I were a song writer, I'd just keep my mouth closed and collect the pay check.. lol.. her name was given credit- guess she just wanted the solo credit.. either way; idk If id want to be dissing the people who purchase the songs i've written lol

  28. 28

Perez only posted this here because a comment to GaGa was thrown in. Otherwise he would've shredded her if GuGu was insulted.

  29. 29

Re: toolman85 – you didn't ask for an Amen but Amen brother! Preach the truth!

  30. 30

Re: Sheriff Rusty – thanks and you as well. this is all cycle though. think about the last few years and first couple of years of any decade and you will see a pattern. the last years lets of the decade are of all the copy cat bands/singers etc with little to no talent but a hell of alot of marketing image and copying what was selling rule the charts. i.e disco then hair metal, rap metal, this pop crap. all of these "artists existed only after a forumla was found to make money". as we move into the new decade, some of the acts fall off the others go for one last milking of the kids money, than the public grows tired of that and by the early to mid decade a new sound emergers. 1yr later you will see a thousand copies and then repeat. the point is a new music revolution is coming, and all the britt/gaga/perry etc fans will be defending a new copycat trend.

  31. 31

I understand the hater comments, i see the connection being made and i think most of us arent haters at all, actually the opposite its not that we hate britt or any of them, we don't know them and neither do any of you, we love music, songwriting and true artists (really seeing magic that comes from inside the person on stage/video.) thats whats amazing is this guy/girl/band can do the press, do the appearances, do the tour and still find that gift given to them and create something that didnt exist before. thats amazing even more now seeing as how most of todays "artists" can't do that. we are just frustrated at a posion that is killing something we all have so much passion about, and realize that maybe some people are helping that posion simply because they are fooled thinking the biebers or perry have any sincerity behind their words/ and or have any talent. its really not all there blame to be had either, these guys are trained and dedicate their lives to pulling the wool over your eyes and steering what you want in life/values. here is a easy way to say it, is gaga a hater of straight people because she preaches about gay rights etc. begrudgingly i say no she isn't….shes just pandering

  32. 32

if you dont have a passion for real art or the art of songwriting and playing instruments, maybe you can understand this.

say you want to be a doctor. to help people and you are just facinated by medicine. you study your butt off in high school and college. you put alot of thought and effort into balancing your social life maybe even sacrificing some of it, stay up late, swet the test results, stress over finals. committ 4more yrs of med school etc etc. how would it feel if on your last year a pretty girl you have seen throughout your school days going out to partys never showing up for class, only talks about her outfits or who wants who, cant pass a test. in fact she has other people do her papers, then say "you know doctors make alot of money and get respect i want to be a doctor" boom now she takes the job you wanted at the hospital kicking you back to work at burger king and the school sends her a bunch of retired doctors to attend to all her patients while she drives her new lambo to rodeo drive. is that fair?

  33. 33

Yeah it's pretty sickening I agree. There's plenty of other artists who take credit for songs and music they had no part in besides providing the vocals. Most, in fact. Beyonce is another one who has a very bad habbit of taking credit for songs she had nothing to do with. One example of this is "If I Were A Boy", it was written by a very talented young woman named BC Jean trying to make her way in the industry. It was her song long before it was Beyonce's. Beyonce took it and took writing credits on it, although next to nothing was changed on the song. Then there are the legitimate artists who actually write their own music like Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry. Say what you will about either of them but they are extremely talented songwriters. Then you have artists like Britney who never takes a writing credit unless she REALLY writes a song which I can respect immensely because it means she's honest. She's had songs she's written in the past, some were hits others were just on the album. This last album she had next to no involvement in the writing process and she openly admits when that's the case.

That's interesting. I'm always interested in who writes the songs. Wikipedia is one of my sources. Not very reliable, I know, but at least something. When Bieber's My World 2.0 was released he was NOT mentioned as writer. Now he is in every single one of them. Did this reporter take wikipedia as a reliable source????

  35. 35

she's right…she should have added the queen to the list Madonna…yeah she rights her songs yeah right oh and the really smart one Beyonce yeah she rights…she barely speaks english properly…come on now…she's right on point

  36. 36

Yeah Lady Gaga can write her songs all the others and justina bieber are the same crap.

  37. 37

This jealous bitch better stfu!!!! Justin does write songs on his own, when he's travelling on tour. He's talked about writing several times and tweeted about it too. Im looking at his My World album right now and Somebody to Love has 5 cowriters including this lady and Bieber. In fact Biebs is a cowriter on every single song on his album! Sounds like this bitch wants to take all of the credit for herself. And Perez we all know that the only reason you posted this was cause she talks about your gaga positively. If she didn't you would be pissed too like me right now!

  38. 38

It's funny to me how people hate on how "stupid" these lyrics are and then judge an artist based on these same "stupid" lyrics. But when a songwriter comes out and says they aren't getting the credit they deserve people praise them for writing the song and all of the sudden the song is no longer "stupid" I don't really get it.
And yea what this lady is saying is probably true, she'd probably be better off just keeping her mouth closed or she won't be writing songs for anyone.

  39. 39

Re: Biebers #1 Fan – To be considered "co-writer" all Justin had to do was put one sentence in. Thats hardly writing your own songs. I do not listen to any of his music but I am just stating that if he wanted to be known as a songwriter then he should fully write his own song.

  40. 40

i mean its pretty obvious that justin bieber doesnt write his songs…hes not well spoken enough to put a song together, even if they are crappy anyways. and whenever hes asked in interviews (ex, chelsea lately) hes like "uh me, and usher, and a couple other people"…give credit where credit is due. and "beibers #1 fan"…relax. youre 30+ years old….dont you have better things to do than stalk and stick up for a 17 year old? isnt that the 12 and 13 year olds job? find it more than a little creepy that youre so obsessed but maybe thats just me.

  41. 41

so clearly she is jealous that she will never be as good as the Bieber's and the Kanye's. what i'd like to know is why is she even being interviewed? she's not even famous

Re: toolman85 – finally someone who undertsands and says the truth.

  45. 45

Finally some damn truth on this site. Add your hype machine favorite Adele to the list of "artists" who claim they write their own music and really don't do jacksh*t.

  46. 46

Re: toolman85 – That is totally not the same thing. These song writers do not have the ability to be singers!! If they did, THEY would be the famous people

Re: frankiebabeey – Nope a lot of song writers are great singers they just may not have the look - I know a number of people who have great voices and are great writers but they don't fit some music exec's idea of what an artist should look like so they don't get signed

  51. 51

Re: alrightalright – exactly! the best songs and the best singers will never be heard!

  52. 52

Re: kpc212 – ha well obviously you were stalking me, so bitch I could tell you the same thing! I don't give a fuck how old I am, I will always defend Biebs cause I get sick of watching grown " adults" constantly hating on him here and elsewhere, when he doesn't deserve it. So mind your own business bitch!

  53. 53

Re: Biebers #1 Fan – "deserve" it? people have a right to "hate on" whoever they want. news flash: not everyone buys into the whole bieber fever bullshit….actually most of the population over the age of 16 DOESNT. everyones entitled to their opinions, and its not your job to stick up for him. pretty sure he doesnt give a shit what anyone thinks, and i dont blame him i probably wouldnt either if i was him…so let people express their opinions. you dont have to jump down their throats like a crazy bitch every time someone says something negative about him.
