Chris' Broadway Debut Off To Rocky Start - And Could End Before It Begins

In fact, it might be CLOSING soon! Ouch!

When we first heard about Chris Rock's first Broadway venture, The Motherf**ker With the Hat, we didn't foresee any problems. It has a great cast, a great creative team and a great script. By all accounts, this show should have opened and smoothly sailed into the hearts of theater-goers.

Unfortunately, such is not the case. The show is actually in a lot of trouble. Seats just aren't selling and there doesn't seem to be anything anyone can do about it, including Chris!

Last week, while Chris was making appearances on some high-profile shows like The Late Show, the play only took in $239,000 with a gross potential of $867,000. Adding insult to injury, on Saturday night, went most shows couldn't find room for their audience, "Motherf**ker" went up before just 600 people.

Damn! Not good - especially since its still in previews!

And here's the worst of it:

Unless the show opens next week to rave reviews, it will close the following Sunday, no ifs, ands or buts.

Sad! First casualty of the season, it looks like!

Let me take a stab at why there's problems.
    Could it be the title?

Sounds like a Charlie Sheen project.
    Dumb shits.
These people never leave their bubble and then want the public to buy their crap.

    Ditto! @ tango

Here's an obvious thought, most of the theatre going public may object to gong to something called Motherf#cker anything. Know your audience.

Well first off, Perez really doesn't pay attention to theatre I gather because this is not the "first casualty of the season". Second, the title is not the problem. The problem is the advertising money. They know their audience. The problem is that a lot of the theatergoing audience are tourists. But it is Chris Rock. They will go if the advertising is good. Not many black people would have run to an August Wilson play if Denzel wasn't in it. Most had no clue what the play was or who wrote it. They just wanted to see Denzel. Same with Cat on A Hot Tin Roof. They wanted to see the stars. They had no clue about the story until they saw it. At least a lot didn't.

The title is stupid and gag me. No matter how funny Chris is, who wants to go to a show with that kind of title? If we start to pick to go to a show with a decent title, to go to concert with singers who are polite and well manner, watch a show/Brodway or TV whose characters are polite and not abusive….maybe those "abusive" or "rude" singer/ performers will start to think twice before they behave stupidly.

Just saw this play yesterday and I thought it was absolutely awesome. So many funny parts, great acting, great dialogue. Definitely worth seeing!
