1951 Novel From Here To Eternity To Be Re-Released With Previously Censored Gay Content Included!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayLGBT

Wow! This is pretty crazy!

The 1951 novel From Here to Eternity, by James Jones, is set to be re-issued digitally through eBook firm Open Road, and will reportedly feature two scenes featuring gay content that were previously censored from the original publication!

Holy shiz!

The novel, which focuses on US soldiers serving in Hawaii the months before Pearl Harbor, and was later adapted into a 1953 film starring Frank Sinatra, originally featured two scenes that didn't make the cut. One focused on Private Angelo Maggio revealing that he is paid to have oral sex with another man, and the other referred to a military investigation into possible homosexual activity! The novel's original profanity has also been included back into the digital re-release, set for May 10th.

Jones' daughter, Kaylie, explains:

"My father fought bitterly to hold on to every four-letter word in the manuscript. The publisher was concerned about getting through the censors."

So cool!

Although it's such a shame that this material was cut out for so long, we're thrilled to hear that Jones' full vision for the story will finally be realized in this release!

Hopefully, more novels that may have been foolishly censored in the past for whatever reason will have the same opportunity someday soon!

While I don't agree with censorship, you know full well that things were very different in the 50's. It may seem "foolish" now, but back then people didn't speak of homosexuality, pregnancy, divorce, abusive relationships, etc. It's nice that the book will be printed in its entirety, but how many people are waiting for this book, anyway? That may be why it's taken so long for it to be reissued.

Does it mention that as a result of the incident with Private Maggio, a son was born named Mario Sr. who's own son continues the family tradition to this day? I think that was also censored out.

You know, the depiction of male prostitution is not something to cheer about.

Yep, sick of hearing about art, music and books being censored. It's about individual responsibility– music doesn't make kids evil, art doesn't make people perverts, and books don't make people gay (or foul, or racist, or whatever). It's not the winery's fault if you're an alcoholic, or McDonald's fault if you're fat. This is a good move to maintain freedom of expression!

Re: Average Jane – Uh, not really. But if you recall, Perez is gay, and this IS his site. If the content really gets to you, why not start your own site? All average, all asinine, all acrimony, all the time!!! :D

Another story based soley on it's gay theme. Must you champion every gay issue, Perez? Let me demonstrate why it's annoying: There's a local morning talk show host in my area who's Jewish. Do you know how I know he's Jewish? Because the guy won't stop talking about the fact he's a Jew. As if we could forgot that fact with him mentioning it every two minutes. He manages to work the word Nazi into just about any sentence regardless of the topic. You could be talking about lawn sprinklers and this dude will find a way to steer the conversation toward the Holocaust. My point? Some people feel very strongly about a given issue. Nothing wrong with that in principle. But there is something wrong with that when your issue takes precedent over any other content. How about you just do celebrity gossip here, and do stories about your sexual preference and all things related on a new, targeted site? Just a suggestion.
