Sorry Russ! No One Seems To Like Arthur!

Ouch! This stings!!!

Then again, these are just the critics! What do they know!

This weekend, the box office belongs to Russell Brand as two of his movies are poised to take it all: his animated venture, Hop, and his remake of the Dudley Moore/Liza Minelli classic, Arthur.

As it is the latter's opening weekend, we've just gotten our hands on the reviews for the flick. To be brief - no one really liked it. We'll be making our own judgements when we see it, but for the time being, here's what everyone else had to say:

New York Daily News:

"There are two signs that the new Arthur is a badly slurring shadow of the 1981 mini-classic starring Dudley Moore. The first is a small but notable difference on the movie poster. On the original, the ‘a’ in Arthur is leaning precariously against the ‘r,’ as if recovering from a tough night out. The new logo is straight-ahead, boring, typical. The second and more crucial alteration is that this Arthur is missing a soul.”

LA Weekly:

"Maybe the 1981 film isn’t exactly a sacred cow, but from the temperance subplot that replaces the original’s unrepentant celebration of Arthur’s obliteration to the sh*tty up-tempo cover of Christopher Cross’s karaoke classic “Arthur’s Theme,” this remake seems to exist only to zap the original of its minor pleasures.”

New York Times:

“What is supposed to be Arthur’s maturation is actually regression, as if he were trading in the whiskey bottle for the baby bottle. He rejects the corruptions of adulthood imposed by his ruthless mother and his sexually predatory fiancée in favor of a relationship characterized by unthreatening, childlike innocence. He and Naomi eat Pez candy on their first date and share their happy-ending kiss in a room full of kindergartners. Never have I needed a drink so badly.”

Wow! How about you guys say what you really feel???

When you remake a movie, there are always going to be comparisons…but the younger audience that is bound to go see this in droves this weekend will have probably never seen the original, so they'll have nothing to compare it to.

Maybe audiences will like it more, Russ! Don't let this get you down!

How many of U are planning to see this movie this weekend?

i guess being a one note charles manson look-a-like isn't a recipe for success here in "the states". He must be better suited for that high brow sophisticated British comedy crowd.

  2. 2

    sound of crickets chirping

  3. 3

They didn't make the character likable. He is annoying. Plus, the script was horrid. No one could have made it work.

  4. 4

the previews seem to be too much russell brand overkill

  5. 5

That Russel Brand has got to be one of the ugliest men on this planet. Plus, I have no idea what he says.

  6. 6

Critics criticize a lot of really good movies.

  7. 7

I never listen to critics and their always harsh on comedies anyhow. I have sat through some shit movies they raved about and laughed through one that they hated. I would rather go by the Yahoo User ratings to get an opinion.

Can't stand the guy or his wife. There is nothing clever, cute, funny or charming about him. He is hideous looking they way he dresses and grooms. His wife can't sing, she sounds like a moose in heat. Stay away from my dairy herd I tell ya. They won't give milk if they hear her attempt to sing.

    Re: iloverickymartin – Exactly.

  10. 10

    I'm going to see it!

  11. 11

I was never a big fan of Dudley Moore, Liza Minelli, and am not attracted to Russel Brand and his fake wife. Guess I won't be seeing it.

  12. 12

I wouldn't cross the street to see this mut. What is that lady of his seen in this mut. I hope to god she does not get knoked-up by this scum

  13. 13

I do not know what it is about Russell Brand…He is just creepy gross. The way he dresses, acts…etc… I would not pay to see his work.

  14. 14

Let's see…Jen garner and Russell bland…quite possibly the worst combo in movie history.

  15. 15

I can't wait to plop in my real Arthur DVD and enjoy the awesomeness. This remake was a huge mistake. I'm normally against remakes (though I like some) but this is just silly.

  16. 16

I only like Russel as a supporting player. I dont like when he is the main focus of a fil. Get him to the Greek was not funny. I however loved him in Sarah Marshall

  17. 17

Those reviews were hysterical. Probably funnier than the movie will be…

  18. 18

I saw him on conan the other night I couldn't believe it was his real voice at first i thought he was kidding around, he sounds and acts like a real retard

  19. 19

I am sorry to say this, but Jennifer Garner REPULSES MOVIE AUDIENCES. SHE IS PLAIN, IN REAL LIFE IS A DOMINATED POWERLESS WIFE OF A PARTY LOVING CHEATING HUSBAND… ALL OF THAT MAKES TO A BAD " MOVIE STAR '. PEOPLE DON`T WANT TO GO TO A MOVIE AND PAY TO WATCH SOMEONE THAT IS A LOSER IN REAL LIFE AND REMINDS THEM OF THEMSELVES. SHE WAS HOT IN ALIAS AND ELECTRA, BUT AFTER BEN, SHE HUMBLED ( HUMILIATED ) HERSELF TO A NOT SO GLAMUROUS FIGURE, AND IS JUST NOT ATTRACTIVE TO THE PUBLIC.

  20. 20

I like Russell Brand. Probably because I prefer dry humor to red neck jokes.
    JMO of course.

  21. 21

Just saw it. He stunk and the script wasnt much better. We walked out half way through. And we weren't the first.

  22. 22

Went to see it and sadly it doesn't work. He is a cutie and show is Helen and Jennifer. The girl playing his love interest seemed like someone out of the 70's. Its odd they just didn't click. Dudley Moore and Liza had chemistry.

  23. 23

he is creepy and annoying. I saw HOP this week and i really liked that movie - so it was a real shame that russel brand was in it. it would have been a much better movie with someone else. his voice didnt seem to match the animated character at all.

  24. 24

just don't like this guy. don't think he's funny. never have and will never see him in anything.

  25. 25

    Saw it tonight.. laughed alot!!

  26. 26

I was a huge, huge Jennifer Garner fan but she just keeps choosing awful movie after awful movie to the point where I have zero interest in seeing anything she's in. Her career was great when she made movies like The Kingdom and did action roles like Elektra. Now her next movie after this is (I shit you not) about competitive butter churning.

  27. 27

I am really really shocked by all the reviews. Everyone expects this movie to be a re-make of the original. Obviously it is not an exact re-make. So why the hell are the critics going on and on about how it is not an exact re-make. From the previews, I sense that Arthur has evolved in comedy, as many re-makes have. I dont know if people were expecting the little twinges of hilarity randomly put into the plot like the first version or what. Comedy has changed people.

  28. 28

I couldn't stand the original movie. I didn't like Dudley Moore. So, I really am not interested in seeing this, either. It's just not something that catches my interest.

  29. 29

I wouldn't spend my money on that!

  30. 30

i saw it earlier on tonight and i thought it was a really funny movie! I do agree that Jennifer Garner wasnt good in the movie though! i miss the days of her on Alias!

  31. 31

Katy has too much womanpower for this chirp.

  32. 32

The movies where he acted before were a success cause he wasnt the ONLY protagonist. Where he is just himself, it fails. He is not that likeable.

  33. 33

I saw the first one when I was in my teens and hated it. Drunks aren't funny to me. This new one can't be any worse. My local TV critic loved it and said to pay full price even! I personally find Russell Brand charming when he is being himself. He and Katy will be wed a million years and I would bet on that!

  34. 34

I don't need critics to tell me this movie will be bad; the studio readily showed that to me in the previews. It looks HORRIBLE.

And, really, another remake? Studios need to start taking chances on original screenplays. This whole era of remake+sequel+comic book adaptation has worn thin.

  35. 35

    I liked it…

  36. 36

I saw it and thought it was cute.

  37. 37

    Re: diamondheart – I don't get his appeal either.SMH

Re: rickraton – Agreed. I just want to punch him and his fans !!
