Officially Cancelled! R.I.P. All My Children AND One Life To Live

| Filed under: TV NewsR.I.P.Sad SadBusiness Blitz

abc soaps canceled

At least we've still got General Hospital

Back in February, we learned that ABC's soap operas were in danger of getting canceled.

It would appear that the danger was VERY real, because ABC announced today that it will be giving the axe to both All My Children and One Life to Live.

All My Children will end in September after 41 years on the air, and One Life to Live will end in January after a 43-year run!

The soaps will be replaced by food-themed show The Chew, and health/lifestyle show The Revolution.

Here's what ABC president Brian Frons had to say about the network's decision to cancel these landmark shows:

“While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can’t help but recognize how bittersweet the change is. We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways."

More from Frons about the two axed soap operas:

"They are iconic pieces of television that have made an indelible mark on our culture’s history."

We're sad to hear about the ending of these shows, but we're glad to hear that GH won't be going anywhere. We need at least ONE soap opera in our lives!

How do U feel about the end of All My Children? One Life to Live?

Who watches soaps anymore? Who watches tv anymore?

  2. 2

My mom will be devastated… I hope this backfires on them and I'm sure it will. Those new shows sound like shit.

  3. 3

Well, I will miss OLTL even though the story lines are not as good as they used to be. Feel sad for all those actors who will be unemployed, I don't wish that on anyone. But for those who speak spanish, there are plenty of soaps/telenovelas on the spanish channels.

It doesn't matter. They are all so stupid. How many kidnappings, divorces then re-marriages, murders and arrests can these "towns" have? Not to mention that the kids grow an average of 2 years per month. Stupid.

  6. 6

Soaps go beyond just being a TV show. They have always been a platform for many actors who would have otherwise not had careers, or for some who got notice and went on to bigger things. The new shows sound like the same old crap. The biggest problem with network TV is that there is nothing original. One show gets good ratings and suddenly 10 more just like it come out. The cable networks are blowing them out of the water.

    Billy Clyde Tuggle!!

I am pissed! I haven't watched All My Children in a few years, but I love One Life To Live. As a 20 year old viewer, I am very upset about this! They are going to replace show with talk shows that already have identical shows on other channels. It won't work! They will have lost a lot of daytime viewers!

  9. 9

I think they are making a huge mistake…..I know I have no other reason to watch ABC than those 2 shows…talk shows, reality, and CSI type shows are a dime a dozen….thats all they are going to be showing now…..absolutly rediculous!!!! such a bad decision, I would love to know who/where they did the research!

I'm a 16 year old girl whose heart belongs to soap operas. More specifically my heart belongs to One Life to Live. One Life was the last soap in New York, where I wanted to go to college and after college, live. I want to be an actress and One Life was my dream. But now that it's cancelled I have no reason to go to New York anymore since just about every show in the world is filmed in L.A. The end of One Life was the end of my biggest dream, and i'll never get it back. You may think i'm being overly dramatic, but think about something you love, and your biggest dream, no matter how silly people think it is. Imagine it being taken away from you. It's the worst feeling in the world. I guess now i'll have to suck it up and settle for Los Angeles and General Hospital, but I hope ABC realizes how bad they suck. And I can't wait for these 'health' shows to fail. We already have The Doctors, Doctor OZ, and the Food Newtwork, I think that's enough. ABC doesn't listen to the fans, ever, and I know for a fact they'll lose millions of viewers because of this.

Fucking Pissed Off. Fuck Brian Frons. He has no idea what the fuck he's doing over there. He just pissed off a whole lot of people.

  13. 13

What about y&r and bold and the beautiful? They're doing well?!?

  14. 14

All the world needs is more talk shows and cooking shows. Like their isn't enough of those already. Ever heard of the Cooking Channel or Food Network, or Hallmark chanel in the a.m. ? Morons.

  15. 15

WHY THE HELL does anyone watch soap operas? They are the most ridiculous waste of time ever. People who watch soap operas must have very low IQs.

  16. 16

Well I dont watch those two but I know alot of ppl who do. I think its a very bad idea. They didnt make it all these years for nothing. My fave is General Hospital. Then I watch Days Of Our Life and Young And The Restless.

  17. 17

    Bitter much, xcaliber??

I think this is very sad! I've always loved soap operas for the escapist entertainment they provide. AMC and OLTL have long, significant histories, decades of great stories (and some not so great ones) and many talented actors and actresses who will now lose their jobs. I am VERY happy GH survived the cut, but one has to wonder….how long until they are next?

  18. 18

Re: xcalibur – fuck you. feel bad while you live in your welfare funded room and she is basking in millions. must suck to be you.

  19. 19

I have a feeling they will return. People need to get their soaps on.

  20. 20

I hate that One Life To Live is going away, but I am okay with All My Children going bye bye. The new shows won't last in my opinion.

  21. 21

Oh no. I need to go check on my mom and make sure she doesn't have an asthma attack or something when she hears this. Goodness. She's gonna lose it. WFT are they thinking?

  22. 22

Re: denverite – Obviously, YOU don't, but many of us do.

  23. 23

Like we all need MORE reality TV. This sucks. I hope they are proud of themselves for axing iconic shows. Where can we go to protest? Money hungry A**holes. They don't care about what we enjoy watching, all they want is MONEY and to excersize their own power. Those new shows sound like a gazillion others, what ever happened to variety in programing?

  24. 24

Bye Bye Bye Ms Erica Kane the top Diva…..One life to live my girl Vikki with her crazy a** in High school at lunch time I would go into my home room and watch All My Children lol………

  25. 25

This sucks, AMC has sucked over the past 5 years or so. But One Life to Live has been really good. Also it means that General Hospital is next to go and that is one of the best shows ever, I give it at the most 5 years. I know that the ratings have been on the decline and are a small fraction of what they once where but this really leaves nothing to watch in the day time. Thank god for tivo and on demand.

  26. 26

Re: OneLifeFan – wah wah wah… welcome to the real world

  27. 27

that's why I watch Young & the Restless! Its the best one out there, and might be one of the last soaps left :)

  28. 28

Losing One Life To Live really sucks. And the last thing daytime needs is another "unscripted" (read: cheap to produce, boring to watch) program people only tune in out of desperation. Looks like Y&R or Days will be the only outlets for daytime escape.

  29. 29

I used to watch them religiously back in the 80s, the Soap Opera heyday.
But the genre is dead now.
What's left? General Hospital and Young and the Restless. They will be gone in a couple of years too.
My mom lost all her CBS soaps, so I guess this is just a sign of the times.

  30. 30

    Boring. Next story please.

  31. 31

Re: Cha_Cha_the famous – bitch you must be her maid!! your next move? UNEMPLOYMENT!!!!! TRUTH…

  32. 32

Why are American's so obsessed with food?

  33. 33

Re: Shelah – Wow, were you ever 16? Did you ever have fantasies of what you wanted to be when you grew up? Guess not considering you're so quick to be rude to a person you don't even know. Grow up.

  34. 34

  35. 35

FURIOUS!!!! I know Soaps are not respected on tv but they are being canceled and your best excuse is that your making room for crap shows? soaps at least have stories and plot lines!!! If i want to watch a show about food, I'LL WATCH THE FOOD NETWORK!!! If i wanted to watch a show about healthy lifestyles, I'LL WATCH THE LIFE NETWORK AND THAT DOCTOR SHOW!!!! SERIOUSLY?! CANCELING AN ORIGINAL SHOW FOR CRAP ASS KNOCK OFFS? I COULDN'T BE MORE ANGRY!!!! AND DONT ANYONE TELL ME I'M STUPID AND ALL THAT! I'M ENTITLED TO MY OPINION AND ME AND MY CAPS LOCK KEY ARE GOING TO EXPRESS IT!!!!

  36. 36

These shows will not last, we don't need another stupid reality show and a talk show. The decision was all about money, it was either move OLTL to LA, and cancel AMC, or cancel OLTL and keep AMC on the air… and they decided to axe both. Its a shame, its fun, mindless entertainment that my mom and I watch together when we're home, and she used to watch them with her mother. I know for a fact that OLTL will finish filming in August, and the episodes will air in September, so its not going away just yet!! I feel bad for those losing their jobs, including a family friend who has been on staff there for 20 years.

  37. 37

I love One Life to Live–cannot believe another cooking show and another crappy talk show–ICK

  38. 38

It's Brian Frons that should be terminated. I love One Life to Live. I enjoy watching OLTL more than primetime television. People tend to underestimate the quality of daytime performances. Who wants another asinine food or reality show, as if there isn't already enough of this crap on television? This is such a mistake. I will watch OLTL in the evenings if I miss it during the day; I will not watch a food or reality show later.

ABC doesn't give a damn about soap viewers because they tend to be older and lower income, which advertisers don't want. ABC thinks it can make more money and attract advertisers by creating shows designed to appeal to younger and upwardly mobile viewers. In other words, soap viewers are worthless garbage to be trashed, according to ABC research. As if wealthy youth will drop their electronic toys to watch another stupid food or reality show. Can't wait until Frons becomes irrelevant and reaps what he sowed.

  39. 39

Re: xcalibur – shame on you for even saying that, I don't even watch all my children but 2 years ago when all my children was at risk for being canceled "the bitch" Susan Lucci took a pay cut bc she didn't want the show to get canceled, and she didn't want all those people to lose their jobs. and I'm sure she wont need her pension she has millions. what does your poor ass have? what are you making $6.50 an hour? stupid bitch

  40. 40

Well close the front door! This sucks!!! I love One Life to Live. Michael Easton is my favorite. Yes, John McBain and I hope he lands on GH!

    This will back fire!

  41. 41

WOW! What a loss to daytime TV. I can't believe that they think this is a good idea. The replacement show won't last…..not like OLTL and AMC!!

  42. 42

Re: critique_fame – - you are on perez dont be such a judger- some would think this a bigger waste of time- stop the hating

  43. 43

I am devastated!!!! I have been watching both of these wonderful shows since I was 14 years old…and I am pretty sure there are plenty of people in America who still watch these shows daily…I guess the NEW demographic of America just doesn't get the premise….with immigration the way it is I guess they just don't like soaps!!! I hope ABC crashes and BURNS on this one - thank god I don't watch many programs on this network because frankly they have lost my viewership over this BONEHEAD move! I want my soaps back

  44. 44

    Re: Rubber Rat – Amen!!!

  45. 45

Re: xcalibur – You obviously do not realize that Susan Lucci is an astute business woman. Get your facts in line.
