Jerry Seinfeld Poo-Poos The Royal Wedding
NBC may be gearing up big time for Prince William's upcoming nuptials, but one of their biggest stars isn't as impressed with the whole shindig like the rest of the world.
Jerry Seinfeld appeared on the UK morning show Daybreak this week to promote his upcoming show at the O2 and of course, the topic of the royal wedding came up. Suprisingly, Jerry had a lot to say about it…in the form of criticism for the hoopla over what he calls a "circus act." Jerry held nothing back when explaining his point of you on the William and Kate Middleton's impending wedding, saying:
"You know, it’s a dress-up. It’s a classic English thing of let's play dress-up. Let’s pretend that these are special people. OK, we’ll all pretend that – that’s what theatre is. That’s why the British have the greatest theatre in the world. They love to dress up and they love to play pretend. And that’s what the Royal Family is – it’s a huge game of pretend. These aren’t special people - it’s fake outfits, fake phoney hats and gowns."
Uh, easy there, Jerry. You are in their country, after all!
Maybe he's just bitter he didn't get invited! Is that it, Jer?!

He has been sounded very bitter about everything lately, although printed statements loose any intended humor or light-hearted nature. Personally I think anyone who is British or part of the Britain expanded community has a right to voice specifically demeaning opinions about the event, but Jerry Seinfield? What is his frame of reference… I don't see the hand of the Royal Family affecting his daily life.

i've never been a Jerry Seinfeld fan, but i have to agree with him here. i was sick of hearing about the ooooh ROYAL WEDDING (gag) the day it was announced. i don't find them the slightest bit interesting or particularly philanthropic. so yeah, it IS pretty much dress-up time for the "royal" family and their obscenely wealthy friends, which i think is the last thing this world needs to witness.
although i agree that the royal wedding isn't as important as people are making out, some of those comments are downright offensive to the british and considering he's in our country, he should have more tact/respect. wanting to celebrate a rich heritage is not fake. its an excuse for a party.

Comedians are amusing precisely because they hold a mirror up to society's idiocracy, he's just doing his job. I don't care where you are from, you shouldn't be brainwashed into not questioning the society around you. not sure that's an accurate description of people in england, probably he's thinking of the posh folks, but i lived in england for a year so i have a ton of english friends and none of them are like that.
however he's completely right about the wedding. these people are not special. we make them special. they are just people who happened to be born into a certain family. they haven't earned fame and fortune. they really aren't special at all. that's not a subjective insult, that's just the truth. they could have just as easily been born into poverty in calcutta. that makes me luckier than most people, not better than most people.

Yes he is entitled to his views but at the time such comments make it sound as though he basically saying the British public are stupid and the country is backwards…With living costs rising, deep funding cuts being made by the government, the proposed death of the NHS, and a rise in depression why not make it an excuse for a party???? As for the comments about not special people I believe that any family that has acted as a figurehead and unchanging focal point (through huge adversity) for over 1000 years should be held in high regard. The modern royals are hardly the lay abouts that some people think - check any senior royals calendar. The cost less than a president and for 70p per taxpayer they bring a lot of money in in tourist, this wedding has made the UK millions!
Bashing centuries of honored Monarchy tradition from a guy who waxed about being the master of his own domain on a hit show about nothing catering to the middle of the curve is to be expected. There's far more to the Monarchy than a sometimes funny t.v. actor showing his ignorance has obviously digested. For one, when Queen Elizabeth II's mom Rose picker her way through the ruins of bombed London in the middle of WWII, it instilled an iron courage and will into the beleaguered, grateful populace of Britain, and gave them a second wind. It's about leadership. Listen to the Queen's speech in New York at the United Nations.
