Fantasy Fans, Rejoice! Neil Gaiman's American Gods Headed To HBO!

Much like Dark Tower fans, we're aware that Neil Gaiman followers can be pretty obsessive, so this news should be REALLY exciting to lots of people!

Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman have brought Neil Gaiman's fantasy series American Gods to HBO, which we assume means things will work out for the project. Who says no to Tom Hanks? Seriously?

Looks like Gaiman and renowned cinematographer Robert Richardson will write the pilot together.

For those of you who don't follow cinematographers, Richardson's impressive credits include Hugo Cabret, as well as Kill Bill AND Inglourious Basterds.

The book/potential show's story is about two sets of Gods (traditional and mythological ones). The Gods are "losing steam" because people aren't believing in them anymore, and they're in danger of being replaced by new Gods which "reflect America's preoccupation with technological advancements and obsessions with media, celebrity, technology, and drugs."

The main character in the story is "an ex-con who becomes the traveling partner of a conman who turns out to be one of the older gods trying to recruit troops to battle the upstart deities."

Wow! Quite a premise! Sounds like a good ole' controversial time to us!

We hope they move forward with this. We're intrigued.

Will U watch American Gods if it gets picked up by HBO?

you've clearly never read the book. There aren't two sets of gods, "mythological" and "traditional"… All gods are mythological.

this is definitely good news! Neil Gaiman has been referred to as the "rock star" of the literary world as his fans are quite obsessive (yup, we are) and this is really his best book of all so it's going to have to be great! it's also nice to see Perez cover news on something like this!

Yes, I'll check it out. Sounds cool!

I'd love to see Good Omens (Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett) made into a movie. Terry Gilliam was supposed to be directing a few years ago but it fell through. It would have been fab!

Very excited to see this coming to film. The book is a great read - I hope HBO does it justice - anything is better than that g0d awful made for TV Brit version of 'Neverwhere'.

@KimiD totally agree about Neverwhere, although the tv show came before the book. Gaiman's vision of the show went through so many changes during production that he got fed up and wrote the book so people could have the story as it was meant to be. He's good to his fans like that :) Hope this project is as good as it could be…
