Natalie Portman's Black Swan Dancing Double Holds Her Ground

natalie portmans black swan dancing double stands her ground

We know, we know! It's hard to believe that Black Swan dancing drama continues…but alas, it does.

For those of you just tuning in, here's a brief recap…

Last month, Natalie Portman's Black Swan dancing double said that the actress only did 5% of the dancing, but Natalie refuted the claims, and got support from co-star Mila Kunis, the producers, and Darren Aronofsky himself.

Then, we saw a video of Natalie's dancing skillz from the early 90s, which led us to further believe that her Black Swan dancing was probs legit.

Now, despite everything, Portman's Black Swan dancing double Sarah Lane is standing her ground and saying that producers "asked her to be quiet about her role until after the Oscars."

Here's what she had to say about her role:

"Full body shots with actual dancing is me. That's why they hired me."

"He [one of the film's producers] asked if I would please not do any more interviews until after the Oscars because it was bad for Natalie's image. They were trying to create this image, this facade, really, that Natalie had done something extraordinary. Something that is pretty much impossible … to become a professional ballerina in a year and half."

Here's what Black Swan editor Andy Weisblum had to say in response:

"There are about 35 shots that are full body shots in the movie. Of those 35 shots, 12 are Natalie, and then the rest are Sarah. But over the overall film, Natalie did a lot more than that."

More from Lane:

"It really hurts for someone to say that they got a personal trainer and they became what I spent blood, sweat and tears doing every day, all my life, in just a year and a half."

As we've said before, we're sure that Sarah Lane is a wonderful dancer, but she needs to stop raining on Natalie's parade.

This argument was supposed to be over…it's beginning to seem more and more like Natalie's dancing double is just looking for attention.

Do U think Natalie Portman's Black Swan dancing double is just looking for attention? Or does she truly still believe Natalie only did 5% of the dancing in the film?

This professional dancer's point is a simple but profound one — that nobody can become a professional ballet dancer in 1 1/2 years. She is not attacking Natalie Portman. She is outing an untruth that is unacceptable to her as a professional ballerina. Enough about her being a fame whore …

  2. 2

Sarah Lane needsto shut up, holy shit…

  3. 3

She def is looking for attention, and I praise Natalie for being who she is, and how drama and the media don't phase her

  4. 4

Does it really matter? I know the double is wanting to make herself look good and whatnot, but it's a movie, not real life. Natalie Portman isn't going to try to steal any dancing gigs from this chick, and she's just coming across as bitter and petty.

  5. 5

Quite frankly, it doesn't make a difference. She was hired to do a job … and to keep quiet about it. She's killed the golden goose by being so outspoken. There have been doubles as long as movies have been made. She knew this when hired. The only thing she's confirmed is that she is starved for attention. Shame that she's going about it in such a way that is alienating those that had confidence in her to do her job gracefully.

  6. 6

QUOTE THE WHOLE ARTICLE BY LANE… NOT JUST BITS OF WHAT YOU WANT. jeez you're taking it out of context as Lane isn't even close to insinuating what you're trying to twist it to become.

  7. 7

She has a valid point - people train their entire lives to dance like that and she should get credit for it. I'm sure it took many many takes to get the shot so give the girl her credit. Natalie did a great acting job but no one becomes a prima ballerina in a year.

An perex stop trying to stay on famous people's good side stand up for the little guy not just stars

If she was just fame whoring I think she'd have found a better way to do it than ruining any chance of her ever starring in another hollywood movie (for fear of her conjuring up another storm like this one). I know we all want to believe that Natalie is some kind of superior being, but lets not do that at the expense of a regular human's lifetime of hard work.

  9. 9

Ditto for me (subtexty's comment). I'm with the pro dancer on this. The movie people were trying to create this image (facade) for the movie/Natalie P — when the reality just doesn't support it. I do believe Natalie can do some dancing - that is evident; but I do not believe that she did as they claimed she did.
She's already got her Oscar - just fess up!

  10. 10

"as we've said"…who the hell are you? Raining on Natalie's parade? I doubt Natalie even cares….but to someone who has worked hard their whole life to become a ballerina and then someone is trying to claim it was all Natalie, well she has the right to speak out against it. And if you want the conversation to be over, STOP WRITING ABOUT IT!

  11. 11

I believe the double. Any ballet dancer would. Yes, you can tell that Natalie did the close ups because of her obvious not-quite-fully-trained arms and feet. And the full body shots were definitely the double. Perhaps 85% of the ballet shots were just close-ups and that explains everything, but then they should just come out and say that. As for her video in the 90's, that proves nothing–just that she was an o.k. tap dancer at a camp. Ballet requires totally different strength and placement than tap does. Natalie did beautifully with her acting performance, but there's no way she could become a good ballet dancer in a year and a half.

  12. 12

Why does Natalie continue to lie?!?! Why?!?! It gives all JEWS a bad name!!!! Stop lying, Natalie!!!!

  13. 13

I couldn't care less if Natalie did the dancing or not. She won the award for her acting. She was brilliant. I never thought is was Natalie dancing. This woman needs to stop and they need to stop responding to her. This is the dumbest argument. There are tons of things manipulated to create a film. Everyone knows that!

  14. 14

They were trying to create this image, this facade, really, that Natalie had done something extraordinary. Something that is pretty much impossible to become a professional ballerina in a year and half."

does this dance double know that you can reshoot a scene? natalie has never acted like she became a ballerina in a year & half, i'm sure if she messed up some of the dances they just reshot them. this dance double is annoying, good luck trying to be a double in a movie ever again!

  15. 15

This professional deserves her accolades too! She didn't get credit for Natalie's acting, why should someone else get credit for her dancing?

Like she said, it takes a life-time to learn ballet, and the producers and star of the show are assholes for pretending it could be pulled off in a matter of months!

  16. 16

This girl, Sarah Lane, just has a different perspective. I am sure she feels entitled to more attention for the work she did on the film. But the fact is, this dancer is being incredibly self-destructive. Darren Aronofsky and Natalie Portman are both VERY, VERY powerful people in the entertainment industry. She could use her relationship with these people to further her dance career and get attention for the right reasons. But Natalie already has the Oscar, Darren Aronofsky already has his money, so there is nothing she can do to change people's mind about the film. Right now I just feel bad for her, I want to tell her to stop complaining and use the success of Black Swan to her full advantage!

  17. fiera says – reply to this

I agree with the dancer. Give credit where credit is due. There is no way in hell that Natalie can do in 1 1/2 years what a professional dancer takes a lifetime to achieve. I've seen natalie's legs in dresses in press photos and they dont even look close to a professional dancer's legs. From what I saw with my own eyes in the movie, the close shots from her shoulders up were hers, but below the waist was not her. I highly doubt she was doing most of the dancing

  18. tammi says – reply to this

I feel bad for sara lane. Hollywood is making a parody out of what Sara Lane has devoted her life to. In no way shape or form was Natalie Portman able to beecome a prima ballerina in just a year and a half.

  19. 19

I saw the 20/20 interview with Sarah. I do wonder why Natalie didn't thank her in her acceptance speech or say anything about the dancers. Hm. It's a mystery! She managed to thank members of the crew, lighting, etc.

I like Natalie's acting work, but this sours me on her a little. Sarah seemed genuine. And while I don't agree she deserves a dueling faces Black Swan poster with her and Natalie, a little thanks in the speech would have been professional.

  20. 20

Re: 19bun56 – I totally agree with you! Remember Flashdance? know one uttered a word for years! Natalie is an actress and did an incredible job and was rewarded for her work. She did deserve her Oscar. This is so much drama. Sarah Lane is just angry because she wasn't mentioned for her work, rightfully so. but such is Hollywood. She did her job what she was hired to do, she is not top billing Natalie is, and she knew that going in for the part so stop crying. Now you have your 15 minutes of fame and maybe you will get more parts out of this….All these babies they need to grow up!

  21. 21

Regardless if Natalie truly did the most dancing in the movie or not, she won an Oscar for ACTING…not dancing. I could care less if Natalie actually did any real dancing in the movie because that's like saying all actors do their own stunts…which is obviously far from the truth. Lane was hired as a double and to lay low. She's whining because she didn't receive proper credit? While that may be upsetting, she's in the wrong business if she wants proper credit for doing what she does. If Natalie was up for an award for best dancing, then this issue would definitely be more important…but it's not because she got it for acting. Congrats to Lane for pretty much ruining any chance she has at working in movies again.

  22. 22

Who the fuck cares about this stupid dancer and what she has to say. Natalie won the Oscar cause of her amazing acting chops not because she could do complicated dance moves. Every movie uses doubles and stunt people! This bitch is obviously looking for attention and bashing Natalie, black swan and it whole production crew is the only way she can get it now, because she sure has heck won't be in anymore movies.

  23. 23

If she was so upset that someone took credit for her work, she would not be sitting here crying to every interview person that will talk to her. What kind of fucking credit do you guys want given to her?! Everyone knows Natalie had a double in the movie. Noone is stupid enough to watch the movie and assume Natalie did it all. I dont watch the movie for the dancing! Natalie did not win a dancing award..so stop fucking saying it is Sarah Lane vs. Natalie because everyone knows that PR people are who is talking 98 percent of the time.

  24. 24

Re: fiera – I know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Natalie is a fucking liar!!!!! She can't dance shit!!! She's the 2z swan!!! She's the Jew swan!!! She's a liar!!! LOL

  25. 25

Since when does Natalie Portman or any actor/actress in fact get Oscars for DANCING, i thought Nat won it for her ACTING. Sara got paid to do prob some dancing and even if she did all it was a move and a movie really is painting a picture from a script which in essence is fantasy so really, does it really matter? To me, Sara is just miserable and sounds a tad narcissistic if u asked me.

  26. 26

I don't know what to think, but I know when I saw the making of on the dvd, a lot of the shots had Sarah in them.

  27. 27

Re: flmxd – Agreed. Portman is an actor. Did she know some ballet before this movie? Probably. Did she learn more? Most likely. Could she be a professional ballerina and do it every day, year after year solely based on the year and a half of training she received for this movie? Probably not. I don't think this body double would have spoken up had the company not exaggerated a claim that directly affected another person. What may be a small little thing to them trivialized the hard work and dedication it takes to be a prima ballerina.

  28. 28

Give the dancer her credit! Anyone with a bit of sense knows that NO ONE can become a ballerina in a year and a half! Natalie learned enough to get her through 5% of the dancing, end of story!

  29. 29

I'm with the dancer on this one and I just don't get why Portman is so reluctant to admit the obvious. She is not a ballerina and could never have pulled off what we saw in that film in a year and a half. I'd be pissed if I was the dancer and everyone was acting like Natalie pulled off what she has trained her entire life for in such a short period of time. Ballet is cruelling and Natalie is being ungrateful to Lane for making her look so good and not giving credit where credit is due.

  30. 30

  31. 31

yawn…did the check bounce? No? move on to the next job…

  32. 32

This Sarah Lane is such a pathetic looser, why did she take that freaking job?

  33. 33

Re: subtexty – Totally agree. I think she is defending her profession. Natalie was great, but part of the reason she go the oscar was the amount of work she put into the role of dancer - I have no doubt she worked hard, but the results of that hard work have been exaggerated.

  34. 34

She's in need of more credits. That's why she keeps claiming. And why don't they just give her some?

  35. 35

I am not sure how anyone believes or was under the impression that Natalie did any of the complex dancing. When I saw the movie it never occurred to me that Natalie became a great dancer and I was looking for signs of a double as I watched it. But I did think that she deserved the Oscar for her acting. I understand that Sarah is upset that they are trying to pass it off that Natalie did most of the dancing when she did not. That said Sarah Lane was paid to be her stunt or dance double and should keep it all to herself.

  36. auds says – reply to this

It's pretty clear she's looking for attention & for praise & to all the media outlets letting her babble, that's what you're giving her. I do, however, think she makes a great point when it comes to no one being able to dance like a professional in just a few months of training. I have friends who took ballet lessons for more than a decade before they reached a professional level. Serious ballet dancing is hard friggen stuff.

  37. 37

Re: iluvpez – All movies are facades that's the point.

  38. 38

so this bitch is STILL whining???? enough already!! honey, you were paid as a dance double, you did your job, cashed the check - now MOVE ON!! your sour grapes are getting you nowhere -

  39. @v@ says – reply to this

Lane brought the hard won exquisite dancing skills, and Portman got all the recognition. Prima dancers have a lifetime of investment int their craft. It might have worked out better for everyone involved if the movie people had praised Lane's dancing skills to the skies, while praising Natalie's acting skills aided by some dance history that enabled her to effectively put her head and body into the role.

  40. 40

First of all, I think you are incorrect in saying that Natalie Portman "refuted" Sarah Lane's claims. I am fairly sure she has stayed out of it and has made no contention; this all seems to be coming from the studio and producers who want to maintain an obvious fiction that Portman is so amazing an actress she can perform impossible physical feats. And yes, performing like a professional ballerina after spending a year and a half in training — never mind how many years of ballet she took as a child — is impossible. Can't we just admire her acting, and not feel like we have to attribute superhuman feats to her in order to justify her performance? It's pretty clear to me that Lane is correct and she is the victim of a campaign to discredit her — one that as far as I know, Portman hasn't been involved in.

  41. 41

I'm tempted to side with the pro. dancer on this one. Of course the producers, director, and co-stars will side with the A list actress rather than a no name dancer. That proves nothing.

They put out a video for consideration for the editing oscars where there were numerous "head replacements." The "head replacements" were on every full body dancing shot. Now that the oscars are over and this drama is out in the open, I can't find that video anywhere. Do you think that's a coincidence?

  42. 42

  43. 43

WHO CARES? The editor said it best. The girl was 23 shots, of an entire movie. Natalie Portman didn't win an oscar for best choreography, she won it because she completely murdered that roll…. actually she did kill herself at the end.

She also had fake sex with Mila, which everyone in H'wood knows is a sure way to win an Oscar, Halle Berry can attest to that.

The point is little miss dancer, that if you don't like that you spent your whole life training to be a ballerina, to be upstaged by an actress who trained for a fraction of the time, then maybe you got into the wrong business. Look for awards from your own peers.

You actually sound like Natalie's character in the movie…" Not her! She is trying to steal my roll!"

  44. 44

    totally team SARAH.

  45. 45

  46. 46

Why doesn't someone sit down with her, and play the movie. Then go scene by scene, body shot by body shot, and have her point out which ones she claims are HER vs Natalie. Then show it to the film to Wiesblum, and allow him to confirm or dispute her claims individually. It'll be less difficult to lie about what is Lane and what is Natalie when you're looking at each individual scene, and each individual body shot itself, and when you're confronted directly with the question, "Is THIS shot Lane or Natalie?"

  47. 47

This chick needs to STFU already! She is destroying her own career and reputation. NO ONE CARES MS. LANE! People came to see the movie for Natalie Portman…NOT you!

  48. 48

Ok, The professional dancer was basically a back up dancer in this movie Natalie is the star and of course is going to get all the credit. At least she has given some of the credit to the professional dancer. The movie is over now and no one cares any more so professional dancer put your ballet slippers on and dance away, we don't care what you have to say anymore it's been months already so just drop it! and be a big girl and say "no comment" geez!!!!

  49. 49

it doesn't matter how much of the dancing the double did…natalie won her oscar for best actress, not best dancer

  50. 50

ok let's put it this way,
if natalie played an architect and be made like she can design a building and we were shown a skyscraper working drawing, we wouldn't be stupid enough to think that she did all that.and if she actually can't draw at all, that's ok as long as she's believable in the movie,by editing, by hand-doubloe..idk, as long as we can see it in the movie.
and isn't that what acting is?make-believe some sort?
    i don't think there's a point even arguing about natalie's dancing.
she doesn't have to be a ballerina, she just has to act like one.and i think she did a wonderful job

  51. 51

Re: @v@ – I see what you are saying but I have no idea why people are blaming Natalie. For one thing, she has more things to worry about then a body double that got paid to do exactly what was in her contract. Perez is trying to make it Sarah Lane vs. Natalie when really its the production people that Sarah should be talking about. Sure Natalie could have said something, but she also does not want to tarnish her image, just as Sarah is doing now by blabbing to people. The fact is, if Sarah wanted to be recognized for her DANCING, she should have done a ballet instead of being a body double when the movie is suppose to show Natalie dancing..not her.

  52. 52

Re: movmovsiesie – Just like Leonardo in Titanic, he did not draw the picture, but the person that drew the picture sure as hell was not like "I drew the character Rose!"..that was the only connection I could think of on the spot lol

  53. 53

Sara Lane was hired to do a job but it doesn't even matter she will never work in Hollywoodd again.

  54. 54

Sara Lane was hired to do a job but it doesn't even matter she will never work in Hollywood again.

  55. 55

Sarah Lane seems a little too honest and good for Hollywood, anyway.

  56. @v@ says – reply to this

Re: yeaman – Natalie could say something kind NOW. It wouldn't tarnish her image to support the girl after the fact, considering. I don't blame Natalie, but the way it went down plus Oscar appears iffy to some people.

  57. 57

Re: DeAunn – Exactly and Natalie's fiance needs to STFU and stop pretending that Herslag did most of the dance scenes.

  58. 58

she was hired as a body double, if she didnt like the context of the movie she shouldnt of taken the role. i bet she spent that paycheck though!

  59. 59

For the love of God will this Prima Ballerina please go away!! We get it.. you danced for 30 seconds in Black Swan. No one cares. Natalie never, ever once proclaimed or even hinted to have beome a prima ballerina so why did you start this cat fight? Fame whore maybe? She's prettier than you, a better actress than you, more successful than you and probably a better dancer than you were after a year and a half of training…but you're not jealous. Only very stupid people think Natalie became a Prima Ballerina and only very stupid people are defending those that think she did. Your 15 minutes of fame are up sweetheart! Will you leave now!!!

  60. 60

Re: AimeeBee – I kind of agree with you Aimee. I wish she would just leave but if she wants to go shot by shot herself (instead of asking the poor editor again) and show everyone frame by frame which one is her and which one is Natalie then maybe people will let this go. Her shots will probably add up to about a minute of a two hour movie. Either that or I think she should sue the production company for more money instead of whining to the public because I for one don't want to hear her bitch anymore.

  61. 61

She won the Oscar for acting not dancing!! Sarah Lane should go to ”You think you can dance?” I saw Black Swan and Natalie's face and expressions left me breathless!!

  62. 62

Can she get over it already omg

  63. 63

Here is an excerpt of an Sara Lane's interview conducted by Dance Magazine

–> And how does it feel to be part of a performance that some critics are giving Natalie Portman rave reviews for?

"I’m not really looking for any sort of recognition. The process was a huge learning experience and I got everything I wanted out of it. But she deserves the recognition. She worked really hard."

Nothing against Natalie, she just doesn't agree with the fesod producers, press, etc created in order for Natalie to get an Oscar.

  64. 64

Natalie Hershlag is the most overrated actress of our time. I'm glad someone finally exposes her for the fraud that she is.

    Ofcourse the dancer is right.

  65. 65

The prima ballerina is dancing her dance…. However someone please tell her, "Who cares if Natalie danced or not? Jessica Lange didn't sing Patsy Cline's songs (lipsynched). Clark Gable didn't swing Vivien Leigh around the floor (rotating floor). Jennifer Beals didn't dance hardly a step in Flashdance (dance double). Yet these movies and their characters will live on forever! Not because the actors were real singers/dancers or even decent amateurs but becuase they made us believe (by their ACTING) that they were. This girl should let her feet do the talking and leave things like DRAMA to the professionals, like Natalie."

  66. 66

    Re: sashaTR

She should have negotiated this in her contract. She could have gone after the producers, and NOT put a bad eye on Natatlie's hard work as an actress. Neither the actress or director have control over how someone is listed in the end credits.

  67. 67

who the fuck ever claimed natalie became a pro dancer in a year and a half besides that attantion whore lane.could she have learned enough for the movie in a year and a half, for sure.keep burning your bridges you dumb biatch.

  68. 68

Re: Quichie – Natalie could have thanked her in her acceptance speech or spoke about Sara in interviews, just mentioned that she existed in any way instead of allowing the rumors to swirl that she "became" a prima balletrina in a year.

  69. 69

Re: sashaTR – She did……on several occasions. Pay attention!

  70. 70

As to "holding her ground", the twit can hold anything she wants……except that little Oscar thingy!

  71. 71

Re: sashaTR – You're an idiot! Period!

  72. 72

  73. 73

    1. Sarah Lane's hardly a Prima Ballerina. She's part of the ABT Company, which yes, is a difficult position to obtain, but she's not the star, much like the media makes her out to be.

    2. This is incredibly unprofessional of her, and I'm surprised there hasn't been legal action taken by the studios to silence her. Whether she's right or wrong, the way she has gone about this is horrible and will end up hurting all parties involved.

    3. What the fuck does she want besides recognition? She's already tarnished her reputation, and I doubt she'll get it back for a long while.

    4. In Broadway's Phantom of the Opera, the role of Christine is double casted with a lead Christine and an alternate. Sara Jean Ford plays the lead, while Marni Raab is the alternate. Marni is credited as the alternate, but her name is never "in lights", she does no promo, and she is only credited as Christine when cast lists are posted. To people who don't look at the cast lists, Sara is the only female lead of Phantom. Marni's fine with it, because she knew that her job was to be in the back. Lane should learn the same.

  74. 74

she's telling the truth, natalie is an unwed mother and homewrecker

  75. 75

so what, she thinks she deserves part of natalies oscar??

  76. 76

Re: POPSCIDICTATOR – whats her being jewish have to do with it?

  77. 77

Re: poorlittlerichiegirl – how is she a homewrecker?

  78. 78

Re: beauryker – Meow! Way to get nasty.

  79. 79

I don't get why people are so worked up about her having a body double. Do YOUR famous action heroes perform all of their stunts? Exactly. They don't. She was awarded for her acting: for sending chills down our spines when we least expected it, for driving us down into insanity with her character, for telling a story that no one else in the world could have. She deserved every award and for those who would have based their votes on the amount of dancing she did, really need to question themselves. "Do I measure the worth of a movie by the action scenes in the movie, the supposed amount of stunts an actor did or the pure artistic, passionate creativity of the movie itself?" When you can answer this question feel free to voice your opinion. Not by saying Natalie Portman is a sham or Sarah Lane is a 'fame-whore'.

    Thank You.
