Tyler Clementi's Parents Move Forward With Lawsuit Against Roommate

tyler clementi parents move forward with lawsuit against roommate

Back in September, we were truly saddened to hear about the suicide of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi, who killed himself after roommates secretly filmed him having sex with another man and broadcast it over the internet.

Tyler's parents have moved forward with a lawsuit on their deceased son's behalf, and the Middlesex County, NJ Prosecutor's Office announced today that a 15-count indictment was filed against Tyler's former roommate Dharun Ravi.

Ravi could face up to five years in prison for his charges.

As far as the other responsible classmate Molly Wei is concerned, she's been charged with invasion of privacy, but her case hasn't been presented to a grand jury YET.

Here's what Tyler's parents had to say about the current status of their case:

"The grand jury indictment spells out cold and calculated acts against our son Tyler by his former college roommate. We are eager to have the process move forward for justice in this case and to reinforce the standards of acceptable conduct in our society."

We couldn't agree more! We truly hope that justice is served.

Our hearts continue to go out to Tyler's family, friends, and loved ones. Such an awful, unnecessary tragedy.

what is the lawsuit going to do? he was/is a STUDENT… BROKE, don't care if his parents have money, that doesn't matter. Let the law do it's job. What he and the girl did was CRUEL, YES, but they did not think the boy was going to jump off the GW and committ suicide.

I guess that means you'll be indicted as well right Perez? After all, you keep posting pictures of people on the internet all the time. You did it to that other celeb a while back when pictures of him having sex with another man came out. Hypocrite bastard.

Re: justtfax – and some people drive drunk and they have no way of knowing they might kill someone- The fact is the should be shammed and humiliated so they can experience it - they richly deserve it and they should go to jail as well -His parents would be crazy not to sue if just on principle

I hope Tyler's parents receive justice for him but sadly, it won't bring him back. All the bullying needs to stop NOW. Why don't we worry about how we're living our own lives and stop worrying about what other people do in their bedrooms.

So what kind of relationship did this guy have with his parents? They don't talk about it and it makes me think that they were very against him being gay so he off himself, I don't think humiliation was not the only factor here, but him shaming his probably stern family was a factor as well.

I hope this money goes to a charity.

Why do people always think they are entitled to money after a loved one dies…..so when they are on an expensive cruise ship, spending the money, they can reflect on their pain????

  7. 7

The parents are absolutely right to push forward. It is not about the money. It is to send messages to bullies that their behavior will not be tolerated.

Hilton you would have a lot more credibility if you took this on as a sex tape/privacy issue rather than a bullied homosexual issue. Also, what the hell does this have to do with celebrity gossip???

this case will plea out….HATE CRIME PLEASE THERE WAS NO HATE CRIME…..
no one is doing 5 years in jail…first time offenders never get jail….

and besides how do we know this kid wasn't mentally before he jumped….I DONT KNOW WHAT TO THINK ALL I KNOW IS I HOPE THE FUCKIN COURT DOESNT WASTE MY TAX DOLLARS WHEN THERE IS REALLY CRIME OUT THERE…..(a teenager walking home from a night job at CVS was killed around the corner from my house 1 week ago how about justice for him)

Finally - a lawsuit I actually agree with. Good for them.

I personally believe a lawsuit is a great idea. I think any parent in this given situation would do the same in order to come to terms with what happen to their beloved son. While I am sure that they are well aware that this won't bring Tyler back - I could imagine their pain will lessen knowing that the person who drove him to such a distraught mental state will be punished and justice will in turn be served. Regardless of if Tyler was gay or not - recording someone having sex without their consent in it's self is against the law, let alone leaking it to millions of people in the internet. I also believe making this situation public and charging the perpetrator(s) will set an example for all of the other sick human beings who may plan on doing something similar. When someone is bullied to this extent; being publicly exposed and laughed at by peers – what does one expect that person to do? Laugh it off? That video will stay on the Internet forever – his life would have been changed. Suicide is NEVER an answer but it is important that we recognize how easy it can be for one to fall into that state of mind, especially in this scenario. If Tyler’s bullies are indeed reprimanded this will legally follow them for the rest of their life, causing the same haunting-esque reality Tyler would have had to face. Rest in peace Tyler – I hope the world will change positively in light of this sadness.

Re: Unbelievable! – You know you're right. Perez you (were) just as bad as them. I'm glad you are changing for the better but you need to acknowledge that you do (did) THE SAME THING, malicious cyber bullying. Good thing Mischa, Denise etc. never killed themselves…oh wait…Brittney Murphey?

  13. 13

so its ok to post hetero sex on the net but a tragedy when a homo kills himself over gay porn?

Re: Ashyxpaige – Great to hear a sane voice. It doesn't matter what relationship the boy had with his parents, or if he was overly sensitive, the fact of the matter is that they did something to him that IS illegal (he did not consent to the filming or for them to publicly show the film) and they did to hurt him. If you want to joke with someone, you don't hang them out to dry like this. This was no joke and even if their intent WAS to joke, it's still wrong.

Re: diamondheart – I was thinking the same thing. Was Tyler afraid of his parents finding out? Something doesn't seem right.

  16. 16

The whole thing is so very sad.

  17. 17

That's awful!! How can people be so mean!! People are so screwed up nowadays. This world is just a sad, mean, hateful place.
