Openly Gay Man Wins Election In Tokyo

Such good news for Japan!

Tokyo elected it's first openly gay official on Sunday!

Taiga Ishikawa was picked to serve in the Toshima ward assembly, and will be handling running that part of the city! He went up against 53 other candidates, too.

Taiga was first a writer, who openly admitted he was gay in a book he had written called Where is my boyfriend? and has been an LGBT supporter and activist since:

"I will do my best to make Toshima ward more friendly to LGBT people, young people, and foreigners."

As far as lesbian appointed figures go, Kanako Otsuji, was elected to the Osaka prefectural assembly in 2003. In 2007 she didn't win when she ran for the upper house of parliament as a member of the Democratic Party. Bummer!

It's so wonderful to see places all over the world finally accepting openly gay people as the normal, amazing people that they are!

Congrats, Taiga!

I miss the days when nobody cared about your sexuality. Sigh. I don't know the sexuality of some of the people in my office, and they don't know mine.

i don't get it…why should we care…aren't we past all that???

What would be even more wonderful than just excepting openly gay people, is when EVERYONE is accepted for who they are, and are elected because they are the best people for the job, period.

so? is capable to conduct his job for the benefit of everyone and not just lgbt? by his statement he seems to only care about lgbt, what about the rest of the people? just screw them?

Re: tiggerchick5 – Well said, I miss the days when you could say someone or something is Gay before it was hijacked.

Can anyone imagine if Seinfeld's the outing (no that there's anything wrong with that) was tried today? Perez Hilton would be having am epic Chernobyl meltdown..

Too bad he won't attempt to make tokyo friendly for everyone. Only if you're lgbt… I'm sure he has better things to do than that.
