So, Is Kate Middleton A Princess Or What???

princess-prince-titles.jpg

We think there are just a few of you at home who are scratching their heads in confuzzlement over why everyone's referring to Kate Middleton as the Duchess of Cambridge rather than the Princess of Wales.

We're here to rearrange your mind tools and set the record straight!

First of all, yes, technically, Kate is also known as Princess William of Wales, but that isn't her official title as far as the Palace is concerned. A few months back, Prince William sat down with The Queen to decide what their official titles will be and they decided he and Kate would officially be known as The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

But that's not all! Prince William also has two other titles to go by. Following royal tradition, the Queen bestowed William with these two additional titles: Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus, linking him to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Still confused? Make it easy on yourself - just call'em Will & Kate! Simple, easy to remember!

SHE'S NOT THE PRINCESS OF WALES YOU MORON.
Prince Williams father is the Prince of Wales.
She will also not carry the Princess title, but she will still be "Her Royal Highness"

  2. 2

    She is no great beauty!
Nene is no great beauty either!

  3. 3

She'll probably use the "Princess William of Wales" after her sex change. Will William change his name when he becomes Queen?

  4. 4

Prince William is a Prince…and Duke of Cambridge (and a few other titles) Kate will not become a Princess until they become the Prince and Princess of Wales. That will only happen when the Queen dies, Charles becomes King (and therefore passes the title of Prince of Wales to his oldest son). Simple.

Catherine is officially Her Royal Highness, Princess William of Wales, The Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus. Since being granted a Royal Dukedom, William and Kate will be known by their peerage title of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The royals don't lose titles when they marry - they gain them, and are known afterwards by their most senior title. The instant that The Queen dies and Charles ascends the throne, William will gain the titles of Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, etc. - until such time as Charles invests William as The Prince of Wales. The monarchs children gain the word "The" (capital T) in front of all of their other titles - The Prince William, The Prince Harry, etc .. Charles' titles are NOT inheritable, and can only be obtained as the eldest male child of the monarch.

all right…I understand these are traditions and so on…many Brits like it…good for them

but all these titles ( and many other stuff around the royals) are so meaningless … all this Royal thing is a kinda costly shit to be honest…
there is no need for people to stuck to these "traditions": kings, queens ,princes…They are unnecessary …Middle Ages are over for so long. …Time to change things

(P.S. Sorry for Brits who "love" their Royals : "who the F..K are you to say what we should keep or not?" they might say…well, of course , u "decide"…but r they, royals , worth it?)

So I guess my dreams of being Baroness Carrickfergus have been dashed forever.

Merab - as a Scot, I would love for Scotland to withdraw from the United Kingdom and gain independence. However, as part of the UK, the Monarch is our figurehead. The Monarchy attract around £500 million per annum in tourism.

Each tax payer in the UK currently pays around 86 PENCE per annum which goes to the Privy Purse - this is the fund which is given to support the Royals.

The Queen is merely a figurehead since it is Parliament who legislates for the UK. The Queen retains the right of Royal Assent etc.. however in practice she never refuses.

The Monarch is still an important aspect in our Constitution and removal of the Monarch would be very costly in itself. I see no real reason to remove them.

What ever he offical title is people will just refer to her as a princess its easier!Same as people will refer to Will as a prince and not a duke or Earl of Strathearn :s

And she will not become the princess william of wales haha

And "pixiePeet" who said they were great beautys? their not tryin to be models they are royalty.Although I think kate is very pretty/elagant

She is not a Princess. People here will not refer to her as such. She will be referred to as Duchess, as is Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall. Neither are Princesses. Only the uneducated would refer to her as Princess when she isn't one!

  11. 11

Baron Carrickfergus? Not the most handsome name in the world.

  12. 12

Re: Gisela – That made me LOL. Thank you.

  13. 13

    @ Jade Brannan

Yes, Kate IS a Princess of the UK and Northern Ireland. Her peerage title of Duchess of Cambridge just takes precedence. If they didn't get the Duke/Duchess title, Kate would be known as HRH Princess William. Camilla is also technically The Princess Charles, The Princess of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, etc. Even though she choose to be styled as The Duchess of Cornwall, she is "legally" The Princess of Wales, but wanted to avoid the whole Diana association …

  14. 14

I dont like it!!. All the other titles are fine HOWEVER her very first one should be Princess Kathern.. I mean this child was destined to be apart of the Royal family, if U follow what she did and what Prince WIlliam did , you will see they walked in similar steps. But to me, its an insult to not have the title Her Royal Princess Kathern of England… Whatever her husband has, she should have the female counterpart

  15. 15

Re: TorontoBitch – AAAAH I havent thought about it that way… Now that does make some sense. Thankyou ! Because I have been bitching ALLLLL day as to WHY is not an official Princess =D

  16. 16

why are some posts comments off?

  17. 17

You can't call her Kate anymore. From now on it's Catherine!

@SlanderusHeathen The Duchess of Cornwall is not known at all as the princess of wales as that was Diana's title and there was large uproar when camilla married. William whilst technically he is a prince of wales under his father he wont be referred to as he is "on his own" (for lack of a better term) now that he is married. It will be similar to Prince Andrew/Duke of York - they interchange in regards to the public and press but known in royal law as the Duke which happened when he married Fergie.

  19. 19

Jade, like yourself a fellow Scot and share your views. Kate is not a Princess (yet) she is a Dutchess. Only the Queen can bestow the title Princess on Kate which she may do at a later date. Diana was not Princess Diana but HRH Diana, Princess of Wales, before she lost the HRH title. It is too bloody confusing I know!

  20. 20

Re: brisen – she definately shouldn't be Princess Kathern considering her name is Catherine

  21. 21

    @ Emjay

Camilla might not be "officially" known as The Princess of Wales, but that is her legal title. She just chooses to be styled as The Duchess of Cornwall, to avoid any further backlash from the whole Diana association. Just as when Charles ascends the throne, Camilla will "officially and legally" be known as Queen Camilla - however she might be styled as Princess Consort instead. Females always take the counterpart "feminine" versions of their husbands titles in the UK, and in order to strip Camilla of the title of Queen would require an Act of Parliament.

  22. 22

Here's something else you may (or may not) know… When Princess Anne's children were born.. She (Princess Anne) turned down the titles of Princess (for Zara) and Prince (for Peter) for both of her children when the Queen offered them as she felt the titles would be a burden and that's is why they are only ever known as Zara and/or Peter Phillips after their father - even though their mother is the Queens daughter..

  23. 23

Re: Jade Brannan – Camilla IS the Princess of Wales given that she is married to the present Prince of Wales. However, and out of respect to Diana, she chose to be known as HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, The Prince of Wales's second most senior title.

  24. 24

Re: brisen – First, her name is Catherine. Second, only a female of royal blood, that is BORN in the Royal Family, being the daughter of a Prince or a granddaughter to the Monarch or the daughter of the Heir's first born son, is one entitled to the style HRH Princess. Seeing as Catherine is not the daughter of a Prince or the granddaughter of a Monarch she is NOT a Princess in her own right.

  25. 25

Re: cattsa – A royal Princess cannot pass her title to her children, only the males can do so. Princess Anne and her first husband declined any ADDITIONAL titles to be given to them as a couple. Therefore, as her husband remained a commoner, their children inherited their father's rank: none. However, they are members of the Royal Family as their grandmother is the Sovereign.

  26. 26

Well everywhere else it says that Kate is already a Princess and will be a queen once the queen dies she takes over.
