Brazil Legalizes Same-Sex Civil Unions

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayLatinoliciousLove LineInspirationLGBT

It's a huge step in the right direction.

Brazil's high court has ruled to legalize same-sex civil unions, which will give legal rights to gay couples such as alimony and retirement benefits.

As a country with the most Roman Catholics, the Catholic Church fought the measure to prevent a complete legalization of gay marriage.

Marcelo Cerqueira with the gay rights group Grupo Gay da Bahia says:

"This is a historic moment for all Brazilians, not just homosexuals. This judgment will change everything for us in society – and for the better. Gays, lesbians and transsexuals will be recognized as being more human. We'll be more accepted by having our rights honored.

This ruling will help. The violence comes about because of impunity for those who commit it. When a country judges a case like this in favor of us, it will have an impact across the judicial and law enforcement sectors."

This is so important for both the gay and Latin community.

Props to Brazil for making a change in the right direction.

Of course Brazil would legalize same-sex unions. Brazil is a third-world, heathen country they don't have anything to lose.

Re: Hassen Ben-Soba – Most of Europe, Canada and the other advanced nations aren't considered third world yet same sex unions are legalized. Brazil is NOT third world, btw. Nations that oppress humanity are considered third world.
