Common Performs At White House Despite Opposition

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TruePolitikSarah PalinMichelle Obama

As we think he should!

So we brought up yesterday that Common was invited to the White House to perform some poetry, like the poet that he is. You know, poetry? One of the most uncensored and free forms of expression out there? An artistic work filled with passion and personal feelings?

Now, while they have the right to think it's wrong for Common to bring his poetry to the White House due to past content that could possibly offend them, we're the kind to think that the last place that needs censorship of freedom of speech is the White House, a symbol that stands for those kinds of rights.

But of course, Hannity, Beck, and Limbaugh all decided that it was outrageous that he be invited.

Not sure exactly, maybe that's just the business they're in (the less positivity the better, apparently), or maybe they just hadn't said anything mean in the past few minutes and were getting antsy.

We wouldn't be completely opposed to hearing some of those guys' poetry, regardless of the content. We might end up not agreeing with it, but hey, they can do their thing! Plus Beck would probably cry and that would be powerful. LOLz!

Anyway, Common showed up and brought his skills. Watch the video above to see how he did.

He deserved to be there. The man has some serious talent.

Do U think he should have been there, now that U saw his performance??

Fox news was applauding him just a few months ago…its all political bull shit.

  2. 2

If you have to ask "why?" maybe you should do your research or stay out of political stories. The NJ police department wasn't happy about it either since this "poet" wrote about shooting and killing them.

  3. 3

No… He shouldn't be there. I really don't care how many good things he's done. The White House shouldn't invite anyone who has in the past, or present, glorified a cop killer. It's just wrong.

    That's all.

I think that its awesome that he was invited to the White House. I find that Limbaugh and other haters are amusing. How could folks follow behind Limbaugh, a man that was found with over a 50 pill popping a day habit..and folks listen to him..the sad state of folks…

why do republicans act as if they are always right? lol spoiled brat mentality

Re: JanetCanGetIT – Thats your argument!!! Hilarious..what are you like 13 years old?? Your not even worth me coming back at you and responding to your lameness argument…..how pathetic.

  8. 8

just another black praising the glory of their wonderful black barack (who's half white)……….
do something or say something to uplift humankind instead of focusing solely on blacks………they've made it apparent they enjoy living off welfare, shooting people and selling drugs. if I focused solely on whites, I'd be a racist………..

  9. 9

i;m no fan or rap, slam poetry, or whatever it is he's doing. but he seems like a bright, respectful guy. can't say i like cop killer thoughts if he's had them but maybe he's evolved which is what we all hope that we each can do. mlk wasn't a perfect kid.
i can se the righties point, but its awfully shallow. maybe if we had the lawrence welk orchestra in every night at the white house they'd be happy.

  10. 10

Barry, keep inviting your radical amigos to the White House. It will be reason #476,389 for you not getting re-elected in 2012. You are so lame duck. How are those 3 wars you are running treating you?

  11. 11

why are you peolple surprised?? OBAMA can do no wrong. HE HAS 90% of the media. He says and does so many dumb things, and contradicts himself all the time, but knows that the media will cover for him…genius! How else can a guy who never ran a city, a state, a business. Hilary and Biden said he had no experience. His closests friends are racist and anti USA. some tried to bomb the pentagon, hes buddy with Tony Resko, George Soros..HE was the Lawyer for ACORN.HE can take 3 weeks to respond to Oil spill, but had time to play golf and have concerts at the white house before he responds..Media killed Bush form responding 2 days later to Katrina. THIS GUY CAN DO NO WRONG….. HES GOT THE MEDIA.. He goes on ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, MTV, all the magazines interviews and paper interviews, cause he knows they will not ask him tough questions, or call him out…..GENIUS.

  12. 12

No. He shouldn't have been there. As an outspoken supporter of a convicted cop killer who escaped prison and is evading capture in cuba, as someone who has visited this cop killer in Cuba and even sung about his support for her… he should not have been invited to the white house during NATIONAL POLICE MEMORIAL WEEK in DC. I hope the NJ State Police throw a shit storm his way.

  13. 13

Perez ~ Had his words been to kill gays, burn gays and celebrate burning and killing gays, would you still think the man had the right to be there? Free speech and all?

I sense a bit of hypocrisy. You are against violence, yet applaud a man who sings of violence. And, he signs of violence and praise for a woman who ACTUALLY KILLED a Police Officer, a man with a family….

Just asking a serious question here. Wondering if it would change the debate if the words were different.

  14. 14

u need 2 listen to some of his lyrics about killing and f***ing gays…then tell me if he shud b there.

  15. 15

You are WRONG Perez. Freedom of speech is perfectly fine and great BUT the White House is the PEOPLE'S house and someone who glorifies cop killing and racism is NOT representative of the people. His invitation was completely insensitive and a slap in the face to police officers who are killed in the line of duty.

  16. 16

Stop being so brainwashed and ignorant. How come no Republican said anything when anti female, homophobic gansta rapper Eazy-e was invited to the White House by George Bush. How come no Fox news pundit says anything about Ted Nugent and Kid Rock whom Sarah Palin and Hannity are big fans of although they spout racist and sexist songs.Common is not and has never been a gangsta rapper, this is the right wing as per usual having double standards and attacking the President over just about anything.

  17. 17

Re: Blunt – Really and liberals will defend a lame duck president like obama to the death. At least republicans can agree bush did some things poorly.
Someone like you will never admit to anything….. that is a brat.

  18. 18

Re: manymoms – Totally disagree…. he has 95% of the media. Also , don't forget he WAS a community organizer. Oh yeah the name of his racist pastor is jeremiah wright, who said the chickens have come home to roost right afer 9 11. He also said United STates of KKK. Great role model huh?

  19. 19

Every president has performances at the white house. Certainly nobody would blink an eye if say- Ted Nugent performed for a republican president.

  20. 20

I am sure there is plenty to complain about. HOWEVER, they don't like Alan Ginsburg or Maya Angelou either. Perhaps their heads are just too far up each others shitholes.

  21. 21

I know for a fact that Perez would be having a hissy fit if instead of glorifying a cop killer, he glorified a gay killer. Common should not have been invited to the white house. Obama is not a president, he is just another ignorant celebrity out to bring this country down and heaven forbid anyone ever call him out on it.

  22. 22

And Sarah Palin puts cross-hairs on political rivals and screams "Don't retreat—reload!". We know how that turned out, and yet she's still on Faux. Could it be because she's……..WHITE?

  23. 23

Re: Blunt – haha Republicans? Try telling a Democrat that they are wrong about something and just watch when their head pops off in indignation.

  24. 24

    Yes, massive talent. Amazing. @@

  25. 25

The fuck I'm talkin' about! Common killed it!

  26. 26

Has nothing to do with Republican,Democrat or Fox news. Has everything to do with common sense. He is singing his love for cop killer. The fact that the White House and this administration invited him is in poor taste. For a smart President he sure acts ignorant at times.

  27. 27

You have to love how when Fox News,Drudge report or Rush Limbaugh chimes in with some random piece of dirt that they've dug up from someone's past how all of these conservatives all of a sudden become "experts" on these people as though they've listened to their music for years. Nevermind all the work that Common has done for charities, the fact he's been a decent actor, and activist yet they never mentioned him.I can tell that no one has even bothered to listen to Commons poem when he mentioned Bush and the cop killing he was speaking about how some young black males may feel and of course stupid ignorant folk want to use anything to insult Obama-it is pathetic and the Right are ridculous.

  28. 28

Re: manymoms – It is a valid argument…how can you take anything serious out of "druggy's" mouth? Would you listen to a crack head? I wouldn't …a pill popper is no different…get a clue

  29. 29

anyone complaining about common is an ignorant person who has not done their research.. there were many issues in the past that caused hip hop artists to turn against the racist police force.. I am in no way condoning that hatred but…
Common has become an inspiration since those days to uplift people and give them hope of a better life.. he does poetry about education and strength..
He tries to inspire people the right way to change their life..
If any of you listened to his poetry you would understand.. one peice of work does not a make a person's life collection.
He has a very posative message for youth that can not be reached by someone who doesn't understand where they are coming from
    Good for Obama recognizing this..
Hard-Core republicans will find anything to complain about and they are good at stirring up crap for their own private agenda
It's sad because I actually prefer a more conservative fiscal policy but could never vote republican because of these types of actions.. they sound like a bunch of spoiled brats on a playground

  30. 30

Re: anggirl – It's called "freedom of speech" idiot…way different from the actual act of violence. If someone tells you jump off the bridge, would you jump off? let's say the put in on a song..jump of the bridge, would you jump off? probably not…it takes more than a song to influence anyone to commit a henious crime.

  31. 31

Re: Gilbert Bumpucker – Exactly! Miss "crosshairs" Palin has no room, NO ROOM, to be judging Common and calling him out after her own deplorable behavior.

  32. 32

He talked about killing cops, supporting the black panther organization, and destroying President Bush… oh yeah this guy should be invited to the White House. Hey, lets invite him to be Obama's running mate in the next election! Perez, you are so blind to the truth. If President Bush invited a "poet" to the White House who rapped about punching babies in the throat and killing gays you would be in a huff so just cram your hole!

  33. 33

Re: dragonfly2791 – Bush invited Ozzy Osbourne to the White House. I'd don't recall an uproar over that, and Ozzy, whom I love, wasn't always on his best behavior either, biting the heads off bats and pissing on the Alamo and shit. It seems for some that what's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander, but the world doesn't always work like that. People take a few lines from some obscure Common song and try to define him and his whole career by that and it ain't right. He is not some thug rapper. It was one damn lyric. Get over it!

  34. 34

Why? One of his poems talked about killing a cop. We want to teach our children that kind of behavior, right?

  35. 35

He should not have been there, he applauds a women who killed a cop in 1973, named his daughter after her, and is a racist. Along with Jill Scott! He does not believe in interracial relationships which actually makes him a racist! but you can't tell some people that. Suprised that Perez himself is appaulding this or maybe Perez just doesnt do his homework. If they had invited a homophobe you know Perez would be beshing all over it

  36. 36

I like how you say "Why? Not exactly sure" like you really have no fucking clue the reason hannity, beck, and limbaugh were opposing him being in the white house (reason being song lyrics that spoke about killing cops, burning president bush, etc.) REGARDLESS if you think that's really what common meant or if you just don't think it's a big deal, don't report on a story and purposely leave out a key part of information just to further your one-sided opinions. how convenient. you are such an embarrassment to the "cuban" american people (which i am but i prefer to simply be called an AMERICAN). annndd kiss my ass ;) weeee!

  37. 37

Hannity, Beck, and Limbaugh, huh? You forgot to mention the New Jersey Patrolmen's Union, which put out a strong statement condemning this invitation because of Common's support of a wanted international fugitive who killed a New Jersey policeman.

Seems to me YOU are the one playing politics here.

  38. 38

I love that none of you even have a clue about the original case and that many people believe that she was framed by a corrupt system for being a civil rights activist
As corrupt as our system was back then.. it couldn't be that difficult to wrongly convict a black woman of killing a white cop..
Commons poetry is mostly posative and uplifting.. especially to those that need the help to rise out of terrible situations.. he writes about education and knowledge..
you people will read anything you read on FOX news sites without doing any of your own research

  39. @v@ says – reply to this

The politically correct police are jumping up and down for points. Perhaps they should be listening some instead of talking to agenda. They look stupid, narrow and unwilling to entertain different views; and I'm no liberal.

  40. @v@ says – reply to this

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – Research Common. You might find that he's not the devil.

  41. 41

The whole poem about cop killing ended about NOT doing everything he rapped about…. It's context (It's what Hip-Hop is, you take on a first person to tell your story). Common is soooo against Ganster Rap. Look up his song lyrics "I used to Love H.E.R." But all of this understanding, looking up lyrics and general comprehension would be too much work for pundits on FOX and people that hang on to every word they spew. Oh but wait even a FOX news pundit said that Common was a "was one of the most conscience rapper's"! Oh and what about Johnny Cash getting a humanitarian award from Pres. Bush. Have you seen J. Cash's lyrics against women? Don't comment on something you don't understand. It makes you look like an idiot.

  42. 42

No he shouldn't have. You have missed out half of the story perez - this guy promotes violence in his lyrics. I'm pretty sure he said that George Bush should be burnt and killed. This guy is a moron - and I hate Bush. As much as I hate the Obamas they should have invited another poet.

  44. 44

Re: kizzy – What the fuck is wrong with you? Wishing death on those who don't share your views? Your mom must have not loved you enough. I actually don't hate you I pity you . Your life must be so sad….

  45. 45

You do all know that this guy is faking all crap, accent included. He is from a wealthy family. He has his nice head on in the video but his racist anti American spews are dispicable and the White House should be ashamed.

  46. 46

If Conservatives can't find anything truly wrong with the people they don't like they LIE!

  47. 47

Re: April 20th – ok you are ridiculous! at the poetry reading there were many people of different races and age; common is just pointed out because he is a rapper. Don't be so fucking ignorant. George Bush invited Johnny Cash, he's so racist.

  48. 48

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – So i really think you come to this site to boast about how much you hate obama! so in YOUR opinion he is not going to be re elected…. which republican is going to take his place? name one out of the fucking 50 probably; everybody in the GOP is fucking running.

  49. 49

it's funny to me how these jungle monkeys praise their god, but they act like horrible violent savages all the time…contradiction!!
