Fox News And Sarah Palin Outraged By Common's White House Invite

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TruePolitikSarah PalinMichelle Obama

Sean Hannity is up in arms over Michelle Obama inviting rapper Common to come to the White House for an evening celebrating poetry on Wednesday.

On Tuesday during his show, the Fox News personality criticized the First Lady's decision because he believes that the White House is setting a bad example by allowing a "controversial" rapper to…come inside? Ha!

He's not alone either!

On Tuesday, Sarah Palin tweeted:

"Oh lovely, White House…"

So WHAT'S the big deal?

Common spit out an anti-Bush verse while performing a poem at a 2007 Def Poetry event.

Oh, the horror! What poet DIDN'T spit out an anti-Bush verse in 2007? LOLz!

We believe it's called, wait, what's that expression? It's on the tip of our tongue. It's so close! It's — oh yeah — FREEDOM OF SPEECH!

If you'd like to see Hannity ATTEMPT to read the poem in question, then proceed to yell over the commentator ATTEMPTING to offer a different point of view (and educated), check out the video above.

Are U upset that Common is appearing at the White House poetry event or is Fox News and their conservative cohorts blowing this WAY out of proportion?

Was it all ok when Bush invited Ozzy Osbourne to he White House?? Common did not KILL any cop, he simply doesnt believe that woman did!! Fox News and Sarah Palin are just fucking assholes!!!!!!

  2. 2

I really don't get why this poetry event is going on when there are WAY MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES TO ATTEND TO but that being said and if it was a more calm time it shouldnt be a issue. BUT THERE ARE MORE SOLDIERS BEING DEPLOYED BECAUSE OF BIN LADEN RETALIATION THREATS AND THE PRESIDENT AND MICHELLE ARE HAVING A EVENING OF POETRY. WTFFFF SHOOT ME IN THE FUCKING HEAD!!! Nothing against Commom though, as I stated this comment it was freedom of speech and that I believe was a main topic for this article!!

  3. 3

    I LOVE Common!!!

File this under "Republicans hate for the sake of hating". For one common is one of maybe 3 rappers who does rap about "bitches and hoes. Secondly he was a poet in college, see republicans he's not a hoodlum. For god sake he's not Snoop Dogg or Eminem, his music is literally G-rated and he raps about real stuff. It's like when republicans hear rapper they go gangster, drug dealer, uneducated, womanizer etc….. The guy is college educated and the right need to stop acting like he's 50cent or Kanye

  5. 5

    fox news is a joke.
this just boggles my mind. clearly they know nothing about common. how he talks about women? jesus. Common is one of the least "controversial" rappers out there…i read some where else then even went as far as to call him vile. basically be cause hes black and he raps…he has to be like lil wayne & 50. cause you know..thats how every black rapper is.
during this whole thing all i could do was shake my head.
there was only decent person on that panel, and they wouldnt let him talk.
    fools.

  6. 6

Hey Perez - - or should I say dumb ass??? He also talked about cop killing!!!! That is such a cool thing to teach kids. You are so stupid lately Perez. It seems each day you are taking a stupid pill and each day you make no sense. Are you even writing this crap?? Do you realize how dumb you are sounding lately??? Really??? There are THOUSANDS OF YOUNG RESPECTABLE BLACK MALES OUT THERE AND THEY PICK THIS IDIOT!!!!!

  7. 7

Sarah Palin is just upset because she doesn't know what poetry is.

  8. 8

Perez, you are a fucking hypocritical idiot. Granted, I think this shit is being blown out of proportion, but just like Common has FREEDOM OF SPEECH, so does Sean Hannity and his "conservative cohorts". If they don't the fact that Common is going to the White House, then they are allowed to say so. Would it kill you to attempt to be unbiased when reporting political news?

  9. 9

Sarah Palin and Fox news agreed on this? Doesn't surprise me. They both get offended over nothing. Common is awesome anyway so it's whatever.

  10. 10

Just another poor choice. What do they expect?

  11. 11

    Not all Republicans are racist.

BUT, if you ARE a racist, you're probably a Republican.

Haven't we all grown sick of Fox's Hate Machine?

40 years from now, we'll look back on the racism and anti-gay BS that CERTAIN Republicans and Tea Partiers spew with the same shame our Parents and Parent's Parents have when they think back to segregation and the Civil Rights movement of the 60's.

When does it end?? When do we learn??

  12. 12

im all for freedom of speech. if he wants to talk about burning george bush, then so be it. But these inappropriate comments shouldnt be tolerated in the whitehouse. What a great example for our youth! Michelle Obama's decision to invite this rapper reflects poorly on her character.

  13. 13

"I carry a peace sign, but I carry a gun" Give me a fricken break!!!! You're so cool Common!!! NOT!!!!

  14. 14

Re: HatesTheSnow – It is so clearly RACE!

What if the Dixie Chicks, who have been very openly critical of Bush, were giving a reading?

Would that nitwit have said anything about it?

    Unlikely.

Not ALL Republicans/Tea Partiers are racists. BUT - if you ARE a racist, you are probably a Republican/Tea Partier.

Signed, upper middle class white woman

  15. 15

The issue is–is this rapper an "appropriate" guest to be honored with a White House visit given the content of some of his work? Couldn't they have found someone else with a more positive message? Some Americans may not be bothered by his lyrics supporting parties found GUILTY of cop killing that might bother others. Some folks may not think it is great for their kids to listen to rap music that degrades women, talks about killing a president, glorifies cop killing. Of course Police Officiers and their families might think the WhiteHouse could have found a BETTER example for poetry night and some parents might agree as well! If Common has apologized or has since changed his message to something positive for young folks then maybe he is worthy of a second chance. Hannity supports FREE SPEECH he is just voicing the concerns many Americans have over who is being elevated and honored by a White House invite. It is also honor police officier week in NewJersey–officers who have paid for our freedoms with their BLOOD–little insensitive to honor a rapper glorifying folks found guilty of cop killing don't you think? Just another example of how some Americans think very differently than Mr. Obama.

  16. 16

She's outraged by so many things. It gets boring.

  17. 17

i believe there is more talented and deserving black young men worthy of an invite to the white house over this man. but the president seems to think that having beyonce and jay-z and oprah around gives him some sort of credibility or extra level of coolness.
its all a PR move. is that what its called? idk. who cares.

  18. 18

    incoherant rap=blackies poetry? Congrats

    Fry Mumia!

Getting waylaid by distractions isn't going to help the country run properly.
Ever heard of triage? Address the most important issues, and backburner issues that relatively are sidelining distractions and are several levels down the totem pole.

  21. 21

So over these imbeciles! Common is one of the most concious rappers out there and one of the best in the game. He is not a "thug" and he is not some "gangsta rapper". For them to take one verse that he spit 7 years ago to try to sum up his entire career is just madness and the madness needs to stop. They jump on any and everything (and everyone) to push their tired ass, warped agenda and people are sick of it.

  22. 22

CONTROVERSIAL? We are talking about Common. Common. He did Gap commercials during Christamas time. Sarah Palin, god someone shut her up already!

  23. 23

Re: enoevian – It has NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE. The Dixie Chicks didn't support or have lyrics in support of convicted COP KILLERS, or lyrics that degrade woman did they?? The Chicks disagreed
with Bushes policies and spoke their minds. Good for them–and their were some consequences as well–they lost some fans–oh well.

COMMON does have some very controversial lyrics in some of his raps–it is just a fact that some American's think that while he has the FREEDOM to say what he wants–those lyrics might need to keep him from being invited to the White House. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make them a RACIST.

  24. 24

This isn't even that big of a deal. Plenty of presidents have invited "controversial" artists to the White House. Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Ozzy Osbourne, Eazy E. None of these people had squeaky clean reputations. Seriously, not everything has to be made into such a big deal.

  25. 25

Lyrics promoting the killing of police officers–not so cool. He had previously used anti-gay lyrics in his music–also not cool (but has stopped). He has condemned mixed race marriages; I think the biggest deal is praising a cop killer; That is pretty disgusting. This is not a party issue.

  26. 26

Re: Sick_girl – This isn't about just being "controversial" it is specifically about lyrics in support of a COP KILLER. That is a big deal to some Americans. Others might not be bothered by lyrics degrading woman, gays or his RACIST views on inter-racial marriage. The Obama's can invite whoever they want and Americans get to decide whether they feel it is appropriate or not.

The COP KILLER thing does it for me–NEXT!!

  27. 27

Perez posts things like this and he words it oh so delicately so it can rile people up and they turn it into a comment war. The more view, comments, etc this site gets the more money he gets. Unless it has to do with gay matters, he really doesn't care.

  28. 28

But it's A-OK with racist Palin that she appears at a money making fund raiser for HER that her buddy Ted Nugent who is a draft dodging chicken hawk burnt out aging one-hit-wonder rocker tells the President of the United States to suck on his machine gun??

  29. 29

If they were truly being honest, [Most] Republicans would like nothing better than for everyone to just go away, that differ from their opinions, their skin colour, and their religious zeal. Republicans cannot grasp the concept of "freedom", because they are not even free in their own minds. They are lemmings who have been brainwashed by the Christian cult leaders, who take their money every week, sometimes sexually assault their children, and manipulate their minds. I don't believe for one minute that an intelligent man like Barack Obama, truely believes in Christianity "as it is presented" (not to say he doesn't believe in "A" God), but he was smart enough to know that a Democrat could only overtake the Republican machine, by taking away their busloads of "Christian" voters. Now, you have a fair man in the White House, and the Republicans can only spit fire about that fairness. Doesn't that seem a bit arrogant? OMG ~ somebody other than political elitists that contributed taxes to pay for the the White House, is actually going to enter it. Hell Fire and Brimstone ~ That's Blasphemous!!!

  30. 30

Re: jgyllenhaalic80 – Honestly, I don't understand how choosing Common reflects poorly on her character. Everyone's forgetting that Common is not just a rapper and a poet, he's an activist too, supporting PETA, the 'Knowing is Beautiful' movement for HIV/AIDs, he even establised his own foundation. Common is not the only rapper or celebrity to comment on Bush, listen to Eminem's song MOSH! Or is it because he put his comment in a poem that was performed at Def Poetry Jam that there's such an uproar, if he hadn't have performed it on that stage format, would people care so much? Think about it.
My point is - PEOPLE NEED TO GET OVER IT!!!!!
Common's going to the White House and people are bugging out, because it's a bad example for younger children?! Oh please, take a look around this world, maybe people should focus more on getting drugs off the streets, guns, child prostitution, youth and gang violence - those are the bad influences people should be worried about. This issue is simply irrelevant, end of story.
Of course I do believe that people are allowed to freely comment on this, but seriously, people need to gain a little perspective.

  31. 31

Hmmm Sarah Palin an illiterate, moose hunting, reality show having, wanna be super model and Sean Hannity from Fox News who said "President Obama is dead" yeah we're really going to listen to these people as if they're smart and have a valid point in the matter.

  32. 32

Let's see, he sings about killing cops and he is member of Rev. Jerimiah Wrong's church, Yeah he's a great role model,,The Obama's probably met him at church, they will probably have a wonderful night discussing how much they hate white people.

  33. 33

Re: disk_eyes – Surely you must be talking about the Liberals

  34. 34

Re: 4America – Yeah and George Bush Sr. had Eazy-E a member of NWA. They had a little song called "Fuck the Police".
It may be a big deal to some, but I'm trying to say President Obama is not the first president to bring someone into the White House with this image.
But the way that the media is playing this out is by saying that President Obama agrees with a "cop killer promoting rapper".

  35. 35

Re: cap chick – Thank you cap chick. You said exactly what I was thinking. Perez it seems like you are choosing to exclude information from this story. You have a responsibility to your readers to STOP putting out half truths. Please STOP thinking that your readers are not informed. Sad. You just automatically go after FOX News and you are wrong this time. We are all not Michael Moore. I am really disappointed that you are choosing not to be honest.

  36. 36

Does anyone in the White House do anything these day except have celebrities over? The only thing worse than democrats are celebrity democrats.

  37. 37

All of you young liberals will change your tunes when you're parents and/or more worldly. There's a limit to what people want to hear, no matter how "free" you think you are to shout it. There is a limit to the number of immigrants this country can support, despite some of your "melting pot" sentiments. There is a limit to the number of kids someone who is on welfare should have. If you have all freedom all the time, someone has to pay in one form or another. As you get older and pay (more) taxes, you'll finally realize that "someone" is YOU. Maybe then you'll regret lobbying for any and every form of freedom. As they say, Freedom isn't free, and I don't mean just in the military sense.

  38. 38

what? veiled racism from Fox news and the republicans? I'm truly shocked.

  39. 39

Fox & Wailin' Palin only believe in free speech when it is their speech!
    What's new???

  40. 40

Conservative turds are soo shaken up by Obama's certain second term re-election win and they have gone effing insane. LMAO

  41. 41

the First Family invited that shit 4 brains "ex-cocaine dealin' big pimp" Jay Z,
and his fuggo no talent ho-bag heffer Beyonstupid to the White House a while back

now they invite, yet another overrated shit-4-brains no talent "poet"

come on already! why not invite TRUE artist' to the White House

and leave this common* trash, and drug-dealing pimps and hos out

    ugh….ah well

  42. 42

I love how you cry freedom of speech..But yet here glaad is trying to take away that right. Like I said, gays don't want equality they want special treatment and attention. You can't cry free speech and then tell people they can't refer to something as "gay" or can't say the words tranny,homo,queer,fairy..Sorry.

  43. 43

"We believe it's called, wait, what's that expression? It's on the tip of our tongue. It's so close! It's — oh yeah — FREEDOM OF SPEECH"

^^ Oh you f'ng hypocrit!! This from you Perez! You the guy who tries to silence anyone who has a different opinion than you? You the guy that rages against people all the time because they said something that was counter to YOUR agenda? Get real fats.

  44. 44

    Re: HatesTheSnow
    And so are you!

  45. 45

This is such a non story Common is and has always been a conscious intelligent rapper. Those insulting him are ignorant that is why Sarah Palin is opening her big mouth. The Right have nothing to offer and this is yet another distraction.Sarah should spend more time with her family and get them right, I see she is a big fan of Ted Nugent and Kid Rock.

  46. 46

Hey you never know, maybe one of the Secret Service will take him on a tour of the white house basement…

  47. 47

Sarah Palin is more controversial than Common. LOL!

  48. 48

Had it been Eminem no one would say shit, even though he's worse than Common. He raps about murdering people, he's called his wife a bitch and bashes women. But regardless, no one would care. Sarah Palin's stupid ass wouldn't even care. She'd be like whatever and their wouldn't be any controversy. Though I don't like common why can't he have freedom speech? Bush has killed people himself 9/11 and soldiers(by keeping them there longer) why hasn't no one said anything about him being at the white house? Double standards much?

  49. 49

Re: 4America – Cops have killed tons for doing nothing. They have even arrested and executed people who have done nothing. Police also are very violent you haven't heard of them throwing people to the ground than cuffing them? You haven't heard them being super violent with people and women? Haven't heard of them being racist either? Stopping people because they see a black or a minority like an Asian or Middle Eastern person? You haven't heard what they do in RIOTS? How they throw Gas for no reason most of the time?

  50. 50

Freedom of Speech is fine and all, but that doesn't make it appropriate for the White House. If there was someone invited to sing at a Republican event who also in the past sang songs about the KKK not being all that bad there would be outrage

  51. 51

Last time I checked she didn't live there so it's none of her fucking business - stupid as Hannity - these people always get their short hairs in a twist when someone smarter gets an invite

  52. 52

I believe his comments about President Bush had something to do with KILLING HIM. Which is not cool. If someone said that about Obama, not only would it be horrible but people would be pulling the "race card". I do think the GOP is overreacting but ABC news pretty much grilled Democrats about it worse than Fox News. What does that say?

  53. 53

Re: TaylorTea – Quite a stretch for a comparrison - the KKK - really? Thats is probably the most inappropriate and insesitive thing anyone has posted on here maybe ever - Perhaps think about it? Get a soul and a better grip on reality

  54. 54

You stupid bitches, listen to the song! Not the twats on Fox News. It's not about cop killing. Fucking followers can't do anything for yourself.

  55. 55

What if he wrote about killing gays? Would you still say that was his right to free speech? Hypocrite as always Perez.

  56. 56

They aren't upset about the Bush Lyric. It's National Police Memorial Week in D.C. People from around the nation are there honoring the men and women who have given their life in the line of duty. One of these fallen is Trooper Foerster of the NJ State Police, who was shot dead by the woman that Common believes to be innocent.

The man she was with has been convicted of the murder. She fled to Cuba where she is to this day under political assalyum. Trooper Foerster's family has yet to recieve justice for his murder. This was a father, a husband, a Vietnam vet. Common raps about her innocence and openly supports her.

To invite him to the White House, during police memorial week in D.C, where this slain officer is being honored, is a slap in the face to ALL who serve in Law Enforcement.

  57. 57

"Years ago, Laura Bush tried to have a poetry reading, but liberals protested works of Whitman, Dickinson, and Hughes, so it was cancelled. I can see how folks would be offended by those Actual Poets. Right."
    *
Sorry, but ANYONE who raps/speaks about killing a president (past or present) should NOT be invited to the White House! Have (most) of you people here lost ALL common sense??? Once you see "FOX news" & "Sarah Palin" it's like you turn your brains off! And enough of the fucking racist BULLSHIT already! *Most* people ARE able to judge someone by the content of their character and NOT by the color of their skin!

  58. buck says – reply to this

    58

Liberals are really idiotic, can't wait for them to grow up and become conservatives

  59. 59

he is rapping about an actual event that took place. A black panther girl, killed a cop…murdered a cop. He make light of the issue and says shes is innocent, when all the evidence says shes gulity. Other artist who are invited to the white houst may sing songs about things, but he is rapping about a an ACTUAL BLACK PANTHER MURDERING A COP!. Why are you not surprised that nothing is going to happen or being said. OBAMA can say and do anyting he wants. THE MEDIA COVERS FOR HIM!!

  60. 60

    Re: enoevian
They just want to call Common the n-word!! I hate FOX news and all there racism..I understand freedom of speech and understand that FOX news can spew all there hate!! But honestly, when is enough a enough?? I never even heard of Common before this and think that having him at the White House is just fine!! Tired of Racism!!!!!

  61. 61

Guess Fox "News" is hoping that people will forget that just in October, Fox interviewed Common, praising him as a 'very positive' and 'conscious rapper.'
    Ooops!
Of course, Fox KNOWS that they can count on their audience not remembering this distinctly inconvenient fact. Even Fox knows it's a miracle if their audience even remembers to breathe.

  62. 62

I cannot stand Sarah Palin. Ive never known anyone to dislike a president so much, she is so polarizing. Her and the rest of FOX plus Limbaugh etc……. just dont like Obama because he is simply black. HATESTHESNOW; good point Ozzy did perform for Bush but he's a white hard partying druggy rocker not a black ganngsta rapper!!!!

  63. 63

Hey wait, isn't that the same "freedom of speech" that you deny anyone who says anything against Obama, gays, or anything else you don't like and call them racist, homophobes, etc etc. The n say they should be ashamed of themselves for? THAT freedom of speech Perez?? Yeah, fuck you.

  64. 64

I'm sure if it was someone who has said something negative about gay's or African Americans this would be a different story.

  65. 65

Oh Oh, the white man and Uncle Tom are SCUUUUUURRRRRED!

  66. 66

love your site perez, but i do sometimes get annoyed when you say its freedom of speech when in reality you bash on stars for speaking their mind daily. Everyones different and has their own beliefs.

  67. 67

Palin is trying to stay relavent. Her ship is sinking fast, so she will have a comment on the most insignificant "issues" because she knows she will get press. The attention whore needs her fix.

  68. 68

Wallowing in ignorance as they race bait and try to diminish Obama's presidency? Wow, there's a surprise. Sorry, no matter how much poop you animals sling, Obama still killed Bin Ladin. Deal with your inadequacy.

  69. 69

    racist much?

  70. 70

As far as rappers go Common is WAAAY tame…And who said he's trying to be a role model for kids? That's just plain random.

  71. 71

LOL! I'm fucking happy they are "outraged". Hannity and Palin are fucking cun*ts!!!!!!

  72. 72

Its amazing how both of them never appear on Meet The Press and others. They stick to their own kind. What kind of dictatorship would we have if they were in the white house. Plus the poles are liking Obama this week so naturally they have to go against him in some manner.

  73. 73

Perez, you've got the issue totally wrong here. This is NOT an issue of free speech. Not at all. It's an issue of whether or not if the President of the United States of America should promote someone who uses their free speech in such a way, which is probably why Hannity cut the professor off. He was making it a free speech issue when it's not. And also, the Bush critique was about burning bush, not just being critical of him, so that does make it a little different.

  74. @v@ says – reply to this

    74

Re: TaylorTea – Hehe, you DIDN'T just say this: "Freedom of Speech is fine and all, but that doesn't make it appropriate for the White House."
You've GOT to be kidding me. Freedom of Speech doesn't belong in the White House? Look up Freedom of Speech. Read and research the importance of Freedom of Speech for at least 100 hours. Good. Lord.

  75. 75

can you please, please, attempt to educate yourself. while i'm sure there are some ignorant enough to be mad over a bush comment, i think the most likely reason is because he has a song in which he praises an alleged cop killer. not everything is drenched in political agendas.

  76. 76

Re: @v@ – What that person meant is that people can say whatever they want, but the president shouldn't associate with people that say crazy things. Should President Obama promote someone who says Hitler was great because they are using their freedom of speech? No. You can say whatever you want, but not every opinion should be associated with the leader of the free world.

  77. 77

So what????? I was outraged by Sarah Palin running for vice president. I'm outraged by the stupid bitch having a reality show. I'm outraged she put her fat ass moose daughter bristol brisket Palin on DWTS. People don't care that Palin is outraged any more than they care that I am.

  79. 79

Re: @v@ – I have. And yes, it was a very clever allusion to the bible, but still about killing Bush. In forms of art, awesome metaphor and good for Common. Not good for the president to be associated with though.

Re: Blunt – Om, yes he does what songs of his have you been listening to lately.

Re: crickets – I could not agree more :)

I don't understand the outrage it's a bit ridiculous and stupid of people to bitch about this when there are greater problems in the world right now.
